Here's a simple idea. Every person with a social security number can go to or call their normal bank or credit union and automatically get the $1200 deposited into their account the next day. Every SS number gets 1 payment. If you have a bank account your bank already has your SS # and knows who you are. Every 24 hours the government can repay the banks for however much they distributed and cross off people who applied.

Two things need to happen now, the IRS needs to replace it's ancient hardware and software, the unemployment agencies need to replace their ancient systems. In my state they have a 7 week backlog and growing, you can't get anything done if you don't have the modern infrastructure needed to service thousands or millions of people. Can somebody better than me at economics please explain why the US government can't just freeze all debts for the moment, including things like rent, property taxes, government fees, utilities, etc? From there, allot everyone a basic income for purchasing food, and make sure the farmers and food manufacturers get paid on their end. I feel like this would be fairly simple to do, compared to the stimulus bill chaos and the anxiety everyone is currently facing with rent and bills coming due. I know there would still be problems, but overall it would allow people to keep a roof over their heads, keep their families fed, and keep the economy fairly stable (although still low) in the meantime. Would this work, if the main interest was humanitarianism instead of politics and money? It shouldn't be just for pandemics either. Even just tax refunds every year warranty a better way. Then there are recessions that happen about every five years. Giving money to Americans rapidly then should be a priority.

We need to know how many people lost their job(s) or income stream; including those who work for themselves; including retirement savings that were lost to the stock market crash.
The numbers in the opening chart look rather low. The concern is that the unemployment rate will exceed 20% or 30% ~ which is only about the claims. Will all of the states be able to get their unemployment application systems running appropriately for this crisis?

Can somebody better than me at economics please explain why the US government can't just freeze all debts for the moment, including things like rent, property taxes, government fees, utilities, etc? From there, allot everyone a basic income for purchasing food, and make sure the farmers and food manufacturers get paid on their end. I feel like this would be fairly simple to do, compared to the stimulus bill chaos and the anxiety everyone is currently facing with rent and bills coming due. I know there would still be problems, but overall it would allow people to keep a roof over their heads, keep their families fed, and keep the economy fairly stable (although still low) in the meantime. Would this work, if the main interest was humanitarianism instead of politics and money? We were able to give rich people and corporations huge tax breaks, but we can't protect regular people from starving and being turned out onto the streets? Are we really that greedy?

The problem was Trump wanted to send the money directly from the government, but the Democrates wanted the money to go to the state first so they could get there cut first.
