Every time I see this slip or part in the movie I tear up. Not for the physical aspect of it but the mental aspect the fact that the father is trapped in a prison and can't see his son fly to the top. My father is also trapped in a prison but a prison of drugs and I wish he'd break out to see the man I've become today even through all the hardships and the passing of my grandmother. I'm still standing.

My pops is also in prison. He’s not a bad man. He just made some mistakes. Says his biggest regret is that he didn’t spend more time with us. This scene hit me hard when I first watched it. Johnnys dad reminded me of my own.

Never been one to cry watching movies. Not Marley and Me, Not Pursuit of Happiness, or Up, Green Mile, Schinder's List, etc etc. But for some reason this scene from a up-beat and joyous kid's movie fucking wrecks me every time without fail. It's the perfect storm.
The son throughout the movie has to balance his father's great expectations while trying to manage his own desire to pursue a career in music. And at such a pivotal moment in the movie it really adds to the tension. The song itself really captures that exact moment. The song's lyrics show a sense of resilience and defiance in the face of adversity; which is the kid's struggle to break free from his father's expectations. Then all of the visual excitement going on and the noticeable enthusiasm he has when performing builds up the scene of his dad's reaction so perfectly.
The father's reaction to the overpowering talent and determination his son portrays completely erases his preconceived notions and expectations. The moment of acceptance helps encapsulate the kid's breakthrough during his performance. Breaking free of the need for acceptance, done so on his own terms; without directly trying to show his father either.
I don't know how the directors/screen-writers intended for it to be perceived by their audience. Mainly because it's a movie for children. I can get behind that it doubles as a scene of empowerment that the average child can grasp as well as an in-depth build up of emotion that a more mature mind can recognize... for some reason it's so hard for me to explain it and I hope everyone can get what im saying... But i just can't believe how underlooked this scene is. I've never once heard anyone else express how much this scene meant to them until i came to this comment section. |
I hope all the son's/daughter's/children that came here that also live under great expectations can break free of the burden casted upon them.

The only reason I listen to the movie version is because of characters like Johnny's dad, so good.

Technically the best part in sing 1.Everytime i heard jhonny sing this song i get goosebumbs.

I just love that his dad goes from being confused to being ecstatic because his son is doing good only to remember that the last time he talked he told his son that he’s not his son, and literally breaks out of jail to make it right

Every time I listen and watch the movie I always sing and I love the part of the dad being so proud and going after the son

I can relate to Jonny in this song. My dad when I was 9-10 put me through human trafficking. I got away when I was 10.Then when I was 16 a court case was filed on my dad. Almost my entire family turned their back on me. They demanded I tell the truth and not lie when I was telling the truth in the first place. My dad is now in jail for 5 years. And idk how well my relationship with my family is going to be but I’m still standing and I’m still here after all this time.

I love this scene, it's honestly really powerful the message the song conveys here metaphorically. Johnny is still going despite his dad being in jail and treating him like a failure, and then Ash being shown partway through a similar message could be said for her, she's still going despite her ex boyfriend being an a-hole to her ever since that audition in her first scene and of course them breaking up.
