I predicted deGrom would place 3rd in Cy Young in the preseason but I'm not surprised he's going to win his 2nd. His prime is amazing to watch and his velocity on his secondary pitches continue to escalate as he gets older which is mind-boggling. Fastball used to peak at 96 now, 100mph. Changeup was 83-85, now its 90-92. Slider was 89-91, now 93-95. Crazy

Ryus struggles after the all star break will certainly affect his votes, but Degrom kept it going.

Cy Young, were he alive today, would appreciate the value of FIP and WHIP, seeing as he led the league seven times in both categories but only twice in ERA.
I think it’s safe to say deGrom is EASILY the best pitcher in the MLB right now and is well on the way to be one of if not the greatest pitcher of all time
Right now, he’s the best in either league. Sorry, but he’s got a long way to go to be in the conversation about the greatest. Jake is great, but he’s not in the class of guys like Seaver, Koufax, and Gibson, to name three.

At one point we were imagining our future rotation as Harvey-Syndergaard-Wheeler-Matz-Montero. Only a few years later not only is DeGrom better than everyone on that list, but is already probably the 2nd best pitcher the Mets have ever had, and before it’s all said and done he will probably be #1 on that list and a HOFer.

He’s got a great one, but statistically Luis Castillo of the Reds has the best one. He had the most swings and misses on changeups of any pitcher in the major leagues this year.

@@miked8740 His changeup was ranked as the third best pitch in all of baseball in 2019 because of how often it generated weak contact, swings and misses, and outs. It’s widely agreed upon across the league and supported by statistics that Castillo’s changeup is in a league of its own. And I’m a Mets fan.

In 2019, Jeff McNeil vied for the batting title, Amed Rosario ended up in the top 10 in hits, Brandon Nimmo was an OBP machine, Wilson Ramos came through in the clutch, and J.D. Davis raked all year. deGrom just continues to have absurdly bad lack with run support: 4.13, as opposed to 5.3 for Syndergaard, 5.37 for Wheeler, 4.59 for Matz, and 5.36 for Stroman.

What stands out to me is just how foolish he Mede hitters look. It was uncanny. He could throw any pitch for a strike yet they’d miss the pitch by 6 inches or more. I used to think the same of Scherzer, but Degrom is in his own league. Clearly the best pitcher in the game. Bar none. Considering how poorly he started out the year, it makes it that much more impressive for him to finish with the numbers he had. Matt Harvey was supposed to be what deGrom is now.
Watching this video, I didnt realize how many bad swings good hitters had against him. Its like watching rookie batters. Harvey was hit by the bad luck injury bug. He can still have a good career by learning how to pitch and pitch to contact instead of trying to strike guys out. He still hits 95 mph on the radar gun.

You can’t compare Degrom to Gibson. The man threw 13 shutouts that year, pitched 28 complete games. Won 7 WS….Degrom pitching an avg 5 innings?…will never win a WS with the Mets..recapping: not even close!!.
