- I had this idea since I recently discovered how to easily make balls on the milling machine and lathe. As I currently don't know what to restore next, I decided to make the 8 ball. It was a very cool little project. Very accurate work was needed to get all six individual pieces fit together with no gaps. The hardest part of this project was filming the last few shots, because it is so super shiny now and reflects everything. I really like how it turned out and it will be a nice decoration piece to look at.

I'm a machinist myself, and that is extremely impressive machining my friend.
Just wondering; is there metal that is colored all the way through? I know you can blacken metal with coatings and stuff, but that doesn't seem like it would work in this.
Is there metal that is black/dark all the way through and not just on the surface?
@@TasarranI believe that high carbon steel and cast iron can be pretty dark.
Ditto...see alot of hacks on here where I cringe. Not this time...impressive.
Most cast iron is Black from oils being heated on it

I’ve been a job shop machinist for 30 years and have never imagined such a creation. Thumbs up is an extreme understatement.
Tool maker here seen some neat stuff but that’s cool, problem got a money maker there, bet a whole set racked in a frame to hang in a man cave would sell.

@Todd Warmbrodt I am a wood working hobbyist but I am always fascinated by watching folks work metal. If I had the tools I would love to make a chess set out of different types of metal.
I've made a ball on a cnc. But, the number 8 was sweet!! Way to go!!
Round enough, not like it's going to be anything but a desk ornament. Could have it ground like a ball bearing is made. Would be a cool item for a trophy maker. Might make today's trophies top heavy though.
What he did with the 4th axis making the ball more round was so incredibly clever. This guy is the best of the best.
why not just finish it on the lathe, just curious.
I'm just gonna guess personal preference.
The guy who taught me used to machine a complete sphere on a lathe with his hands putting cut on the z axis taking it off on the x axis (no CNC back in them days) followed by filing it then polishing it with emery cloth ,proper old school tradesman over 35 years.
It's fascinating how the brass almost looks to be translucent when the ball has been polished. Truly beautiful.

It would make an awesome shifter especially with the weight, I find heavy shift handles make shifting so much smoother.

What i love about his videos, is that he doesn't add annoying repetitive music over it.

Looking back at this project, I feel you should do the entire billiard set. Yes it would be a massive undertaking, but the end result would be a great reward.

@@tyecad I imagine the balls would just end up with dents in them. Actual billiards I think are made with material less likely to allow dents.

In a million years I'd never have guessed that's how they got that 8 on there...
I mean for an actual pool ball it might be different. This is how you'd do it with a lathe and a mill

this makes the balls center of gravity change in a way that the ball is pretty useless now. Not that you would use steel billiard ball anyways.
Ive been watching alot of machinist videos lately, and the amount it takes to center everything, zero everything out, making sure theres no wobble... its insane. He doesn't just lock it in the chuck and start cutting, theres faaaarrr more involved and that makes me love this channel even more.
That he chamfered the edges of the “8” interiors only to completely mill them off minutes later is the most my mechanics thing ever.

@@ratsuay I though that was the Greeks (or specifically Galenus). The Ancient Egyptians were known for some pretty crazy stone carving abilities though, there's one statue of a Pharoah carved out of a stone that is second to hardness in diamonds, if I'm remembering all of that correctly and nobody knows how they did it.

The end result was SO GOOD!!
Regardless whether it's "perfectly" spherical or practical for actual pool, it looks absolutely amazing, and it would look incredible on some kind of stand.

I also love that you chamfered the edges of the rods used to make the 8 for literally no reason since it was all going to be machined away anyway. That's very on-brand for you. :)
Also makes it easier to insert them into their holes, but both ends were chamfered so your point still stands :)
It's much much much harder to pressfit without chamfered edges

As a machinist I was about to nit pick some of your cutter choice and feed rates but then I saw your mill work. Awesome stuff and a very nice way to make a sphere, well done. A million ways to skin a cat in this trade and I picked up a trick here.

@@DavidPankarican it is a 2% dislike rate, which about expected for any highly viewed video, regardless of content.
@@DavidPankarican no dislike from myself, but... the last touches prevent this "ball" from being perfectly spherical, not to mention mass difference between the alloys used, making it a purely decorative object.
@@jmc8583 It was always going to be decorative. No one is going to use a steel 8-ball in real pool game. It probably outweighs the other balls by 5-10x.
But I was also surprised that he used a file at the end. If he had taken the nub and put the ball into the chuck at an angle, he could have used the shape of the rest of the ball to maintain sphericity.

Wow I love engineering and this sort of stuff. Anyone asking "why make this" is missing the point. Its about a process, overcoming problems, maths, technique, skill, experience, enjoyment... If your job contains all the above, you've got a good job.
