None of this explains why it took so long to get reinforcements. One of my state reps called our Maryland governor begging to send troops or do anything to help. Interesting. I listened to a podcast with an FBI agent not more than 24 hours before the attacks began.
The interview was a month old but the agent warned that the agency knew that there was a lot of chatter in far right wing chat rooms. He also mentioned that the far-left was also chattering but not with the same urgency or frequency as the far-right rooms. The FBI knew something was coming, but, according to the agent, due to privacy laws in the United States, domestic terrorism is handled differently than international terrorism and the agency, unfortunately, cannot step in until the plans are already in motion.
I don't know if January 6 may change things.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the way people in most countries operate. First, they are caught totally unprepared for a catastrophe. After the " clean up " come the promises to never let something like that " thing awful thing " happen again. Third come strong indications that something big/catastrophic is about to happen. Then when it happens we hear that the appropriate parties were aware it might happen...but decided not to share that information with parties that would have benefited from the advanced warning.

We need to trust agencies to practice good faith and not abuse their power, because this is what happens when we allow people to basically say whatever they want. People arguing that free speech shall never be infringed upon seem to think that there's some slippery slope where we dive into an Orwellian 1984 society. Those assumptions are not based on reality and we should really start focusing more on what's best for national security and what's best for the safety of our population. You're not going to see FBI agents bashing in your door every time you tweet something. It's clear what the difference is between someone having a hot take on some topic and someone planning to commit crimes.
