I work in a mental health center and we don’t shoot our patients.
I hope they feel guilty.. Why on Earth would they call the police?? I tell my kids NEVER EVER call the police. I make them watch these videos. They are the ENEMY
My stepmom work in the mental facilities before they were shut down across our nation. She was trained for this profession in a controlled environment. Our officers do not have the luxury of a controlled environment. They have to make a split 2nd decision. We may not like the outcome.They deserve to go home to their families.

The dispatcher needs training too. The wrong person was sent to respond to the call.

Note to self: If a loved one of mine is having a mental episode don't call 911 asking for a mental health professional, because the state will send a Police Officer to administer a very different kind of shot.

More often than not they are right and the media is wrong. Hands up don't shoot was a lie and if it wasn't then Obama's Attorney general did not do a good job in supervising the investigation that ultimately allowed sufficient evidence to free the officer of any wrong doing twice. I have 1st cousin that when they get to a certain point you need to get help they are a danger to themselves and us. And no we can’t get them in a car, we couldn’t drive safely I was attacked while driving. You need that professional help and it needs to come to you.

So let's ask the real question. Did this rather large, angry, and aggressive man approach another human being aggressively?
Yes.
Did this individual CONTINUE even after an initial less lethal defense was attempted?
Yes.
Could that fact be indicative of the danger to the officer?
Yes!

This officer was not pinned, he had plenty of space to back up and call in more help. This officer also escalated the situation by pulling his taser as soon as this man walked out of the door. He was not walking straight towards him, he walked out of the door and the officer immediately pulls his taser.

Those Capitol Police only shot 1 person that I've heard about. If multitudinous Capitol Police Officers would have opened fire into the ones storming through the doors then maybe they would've stopped and retreated. Agreed, do not call the police unless it’s unavoidable. In small situations they typically make things worse. In dire situations someone could potentially end up dead when it doesn’t need to escalate in that direction. Call the fire department instead.

Dell Mlller, People should NOT have to stop calling a service they pay for, and we all pay taxes for police. The solution to put money for mental health issues with mental health facilities--not with police. Many mental health facilities died out in the 70-80s due to lack of state and federal funding; that money now goes to police depts. Even police who may have good intentions are not trained in mental health. Police depts also need to do more psychological screening so that they weed out applicants who see every non-white person as some kind of target to shoot.

If you can't deal with your family member what makes you think the police can? If you are afraid enough of a family member to call the police why think the police will not be afraid of that family member as well?
They didn't call for a street cop, they called for a mental health officer. This is done all the time when a family is having a problem with a loved one and needs them hospitalized. In Florida, it's called "Baker Acted" (from the law "The Baker Act") when a doctor/mental health professional, judge, or cop commits a person to a mental health treatment center (for up to 3 days). Of course, if the family member is freaking out in your home, the only option of the 3 is to call the cops. I've known a couple of people who've gotten Baker Acted by their family. They were both upper-middle-class white women so zero chance of them getting shot. #BewareTheBlondeTrophyWife

He told me that I was seeing things that aren't true, that the police and are there to help. What kind of help is this?

He had mental issues that might be due to past drug taking in his more youthful days. People usually don't suddenly develop mental issues - they usually do something to themselves to get into that situation.

Unfortunately I have a relative with mental health and when he goes into crisis I make a point not to call the police.
I knew this young man personally. He was from Bryan Texas. He was always a nice guy. He had obvious mental issues and was always respectful.
This was altogether avoidable.
Never ever call the cops for mentally ill family members or May have to live with knowing you called their killers to the situation.
As a black man, I know it's unpopular for me to say this... But this isn't racism... This is poor training and lack of courage. Our law enforcement shouldn't be so easily shaken and made fearful for thier lives. These officers need hand to hand training and definitely BJJ training. There is no reason they couldn't have restrained this guy without the use of lethal force. These cops get scared and immediately reach for their firearms...
For those who keep asking why a cop was even sent in the first place, the protocol in many parts of the country is to automatically dispatch police officers to anyone who reports a 9-11 emergency, regardless of the nature of said emergency. All the more reason to change policing in this country so that officers only go where they're absolutely needed; so that mental health emergencies are instead handled by mental health professionals to ensure not only that people receive the assistance they actually need, but to stop these atrocities from continuously taking place. Anything else is completely inhumane, and makes for a nation that's the greatest in name only, not in substance.
