The One Midnight Sky Scene That Makes Us Love George Clooney Even More | Netflix

  • Even for star and director George Clooney, The Midnight Sky is an unique project. It's a sci-fi film that's more interested in people than science. There are plenty of action scenes, but its overall vibe is thoughtful and introspective, and despite being about the end of the world, it's surprisingly full of hope.
As such, it's only fitting that one of Clooney's best scenes in The Midnight Sky is also one of its smallest. During their trek across the Arctic, Clooney's character, Augustine, and the small girl accompanying him, Iris, duck into a makeshift shelter for the night. Armed with colored pencils, Iris begins drawing a picture of a woman, prompting Austine to talk about his own past.
The Midnight Sky's heart and soul lie in its quiet moments, and this brief conversation is key to understanding Augustine and his relationship with Iris. George Clooney has made many excellent movies, but as this scene proves, The Midnight Sky is one of his best yet. Here's why.
Unlike a lot of the characters Clooney plays, Augustine is much more subdued. He's cantankerous, and he rarely smiles. There's a powerful sense of restraint in Clooney's performance, and you can see it in his directing, too.
Compared to the dark comedic energy of Suburbicon or the striking black-and-white cinematography of Good Night, and Good Luck, The Midnight Sky never calls attention to itself. This scene only has a couple of cuts. It's mostly just two people sitting across from each other, separated by the glow of a stray flashlight.
It's confident without being showy, and is the kind of thing that only a director with experience can pull off.

"Surprisingly full of hope"???? Everyone on Earth plus Augustine will die or have a bleak future and Iris' child will grow up alone in space once her parents kick the space bucket.
And Augustine was a PoS for blaming his imaginary daughter (ultimately himself) for wanting to stop at the sinking death cube for the night.

This video is beautiful, but I have one gripe: I think there is more to the fact that him and Iris can't communicate. Here's why:
Clooney began to distance himself from Iris' mother. He stopped effectively communicating with her, which led to their eventual downfall. Clooney as a result can't communicate with Iris, for 2 reasons: 1) This is a reflection of himself - Iris will not communicate with him, the same thing he did to her mother. This leads to the two of them having awkward moments and misunderstandings about one another. Precisely what happened between him and Iris' mother. When Iris finally speaks, it shakes the foundation of his soul and wakes him up to the catastrophe happening around him. Had she not spoken, he may have drowned in the ice. This is one lesson, that you can avoid catastrophies within your relationships by putting forth the effort to communicate with your loved ones.
    2) The other reason he cannot communicate with her is because he never met Iris. He never heard her childhood voice, so his subconscious shows him the only version of her he can remember - which is the one time he saw her when Iris and her mother were talking to her family before they drove away. You can see her hair and shoes are very similar in that scene compared to when we see her with Clooney.
And why does why he see this fake Iris? It is only a subjective theory, but it is often said that the last thing you see before you die is images of your loved ones. It is a subconscious attempt to give you strength and courage to keep fighting to live, so that you may perhaps return to your loved ones or save them. Alongside this, it is said you may see the things which make you feel the most guilt. It is a metaphorical "confession" so to speak.

This film was terrible. Never trusting George Clooney as a director again.
Barely anything happened. So many scenes made no sense.
For example when the girl was took her mask off, and blood flew everywhere. And the guy responsible for treating her was just staring at it for longer then it took the capsule to pressurise.

@@user-qz9yx3dh4i Lazy writing is the opposite. Lazy writing would be having to spoon feed the audience like how the earth got to that state, how they built the ships, what happened to the other ships etc. I found it refreshing. I’m not wanting to see how the built the space ship , but I do want to see how the underground shelter look like , how they plan to escape earth to the new livable planet or how the two astronauts try to find the underground or even make it to the surface, and with Spider-Man it’s common knowledge on how Peter’s uncle dies.
Inception did it great letting the audience concluded their own thought of how it ended with the spinning top , this movie just let to much meat on the bone , but everyone has their own opinion like you said , Happy holidays to you as well

You must be smarter and more perceptive, or at least more judgmental than I. I guess I considered it, but if I had decided that was the case I don't think it would have finished the movie. Then again, I wonder if I should have bothered. A movie like this, about all people dying would never have been made, even not so long ago. There is something kind of toxic in a lot of stuff that comes out of Hollywood, or the movie industry.

Really not a good movie. The scenes dragged on, the actors spoke slowly and constantly stared off (into space lol), and they were physically slow moving. It was random one-liners and everyone seemed off, just odd characters. The ship was spotless- like no indication of people living there. Clooney's acting wasn't great and the little girl just staring all the time. I kept waiting for something to happen and nothing ever really happens. You're just left totally perplexed to what you just watched. There was just nothing

    • @JesseAllenJr
      @JesseAllenJr 3 년 전 +2

I disagree. The movie is meant to be silent and introspective. It is meant to show how emotion can be conveyed without dialogue, and if you watch the movie again or watch the video titled "Secrets you missed" on KRplus, much more will make sense. It is a movie you have to pay attention to, it is not meant to entertain you with Michael Bay action and psychological thrills.
