In Hillbilly Elegy, the actress stars as the sharp-tongued grandmother of a young boy with potential to be a huge success in life. Of course, that's only if only he can escape the cycle of chaos and violence that plagued his childhood.
Close's Mamaw, who is based on the real-life woman who meant so much to attorney and author J.D. Vance, is a truly complicated character. And Close manages to present all of her flaws. contradictions, and redeeming qualities with such precision that we can't help but fall in love with her all over again.
Close is a consistent scene-stealer throughout Hillbilly Elegy, but there's one scene in particular that really leaves an indelible mark.
In the third act, after Mamaw is hospitalized from a fall, she realizes that she's the only person who can step in to help J.D. get his life back on track.
After ripping out her IV line and marching from the hospital to Bev's new home, she finally confronts her daughter over her parenting of J.D. and demands that the boy come to live with her so that he can have a chance at a better life.
Not only is the scene powerful, but it also reminds us exactly why it is that Close has been a legend of the silver screen for so many decades.

Bro that scene when he sees mamaw beg the delivery boy for anything he can give her and he realizes what she’s willing to sacrifice for him is absolutely empowering. And the scenes of JD trying his best to do everything he can to better his life because of what his grandmother is sacrificing for him is so dam good. Idk why this film got a low score it’s absolutely gold
What hurt me was how full his plate was and how empty hers was because she gave a damn about him. I think seeing this ultimately makes him decide to get his shit together. Brought a tear to my eye.
Made me cry because my grandmother loved me so much more than my parents. Thank goodness I spent most of my life with her!❤️
The left “cancelled” this movie because it showed people other than “blacks” struggling in life... and the fact it proves if you put your mind to anything, you can do anything ... no matter where you come from 🤷♂️

Critics have been overly harsh regarding this film. I enjoyed it, and as always, Glen Close is a revelation. I certainly hope she gets an Academy Award at some point.
I read their reviews and it.....confused me. It's like we weren't watching the same movie. It's almost like they didn't get it or they were disappointed that the point and lessons of the film weren't what they wanted it to be.

@@hardsam68 I know what she has won but it is so glaring that she hasn't won an Oscar especially when you consider her epic performances. I just watched Hillbilly Elegy and although her performance was wonderful the overall movie wasn't great in my opinion. I hope that doesn't hurt her chances. I just love her so much and want to see her win an Oscar.

AWESOME movie! Glenn Close was so realistic in the role of MaMaw.
I really liked the scene where JD tells Mamaw/Glenn Close that he got the highest grade on the algebra test. It really touched me, and reminded me of when I got the highest grade on the algebra I final in high school. I had to watch this scene several times before I watched the rest of the movie. I liked it when she took JD's test and walked to the living room, sat down on the sofa, and just looked at that test. There were tears in her eyes, there were tears in my eyes too.
GO FOR THE OSCAR GLENN!!! YOU ARE A CINEMA TREASURE!

I cannot believe that this movie got panned by the critics! For political reasons, because this put a human face on ‘ the deplorables’ It shows the poverty and addiction that brings a community low, but also the strength of family, in people like Mawmaw. The film was a an excellent adaptation of the book, which I also highly recommend. Probably won’t get any Oscar nominations, despite the outstanding acting and the direction of Ron Howard. Sad world we are in now.

I have been on my soapbox about Glenn Close for literally decades. I don't know why the Academy overlooks her time and time again. They always seem to determine that the performance of another actress was better than Glenn's. With all due respect to Cher, Glenn should have won the Oscar way back in 1987 for *Fatal Attraction* . I have been outraged about that ever since. Olivia Colman turned in a wonderful performance in *The Favourite* but was it really better than Glenn in *The Wife?* And now here we are in 2021. I recently read some Oscar previews where someone predicted that Glenn would win the SAG but wouldn't win the Oscar. They said "Glenn will surely win *one day* but this isn't her year." One day? Are you kidding me? How old will Glenn have to be? She just turned 74 years old this month for crying out loud. When will this wonderful and iconic actress finally get the recognition she deserves? For the love of God...let it be this year.
In my oppinion she's the greatest actress! All the good roles deserves her!
@@pinx8850 She is my favorite actress of all time. I first fell in love with her as an actress in the 1985 Thriller named Jagged Edge. And then once I saw her performance in Fatal Attraction it just solidified her as my favorite.

Masterful production of J.D. Vance's novel. Close and Adams should nail Oscar nominations. Ron Howard (directing) and Vanessa Taylor (screenplay) also deserve consideration by the Academy.

Dang this scene reminds me of my paternal grandmother taking custody of my two cousins because their father was abusing them (sexually) and my aunt allowed it. I'm honestly surprised they never saw jail time. My grandmother did her best with them. But they ended up stealing from her when they got older, dropping out of school, idk when my boy cousin is, but my girl cousin had 2 kids who were also taken from her and she lives with her mother and my bio father in the same house as my grandmother who had a stroke years ago and so is bed ridden. It's so sad. 😭
No, I wouldn't say this would make me "love Glenn Close even more," but she portrayed the character well. She's just another actress, and they can all be interchanged and replaced. I'm smart enough to know that when it comes to Hollywood, nobody is special. Lol. At least they didn't get that damn Merle Streep to play the part, thank God. But having said all that, EVERYBODY should have a grandma or grandpa willing to lay out reality as they're growing up. We all need to hear some tough love now and again.

Adani, Ambani and other corporates had an eyebrow on massive food grains marketing of India. They had few problems:
Problem 1 :
States had different rules and regulations to buy food grains from farmers. It was difficult for corporates to handle so many states with so many different regulations and taxes.
Modi Solution:
Took control from states and made 1 act for whole country. Corporates happy.
Problem 2:
Corporates will buy crops and store them. But Essential Commodity act will stop them for storing crops for long time, as it increase prices in market.
Modi Solution:
Food crops will not come under Essential Commodity act and can be stored for longer period. Corporates again happy.
Problem 3:
It was hard to determine that what type of crop will be grown by farmers.
Modi Solution:
Contract farming for farmers where they will be told by corporates to grow what kind of crop. Corporates very happy.
Problem 4:
How Corporates will handle court cases if anything goes wrong against farmers.
Modi Solution:
Farmers cannot go to courts. They have to go to SDM and DC.
Corporates again happy and jumping as they can bribe them.

It's a great film.The critics wanted it to be about trump supporters and politics.But it's a family story and brilliantly acted.
Because her performance was MAJESTIC! And that's way more difficult to achieve in "one of the worst movies of 2020" as you said. So that's "acting".
Outstanding performances in a terrible film. Strange combination.
