- Some people say that truth is stranger than fiction, but the world of science-fiction always comes through to remind us just how much weirder things could truly be. To help guide your next streaming adventure into realms unknown, here's a look at some great sci-fi movies you won't want to miss.
It might be hard to hold out hope when the entire world around you has been evacuated, but the protagonist of IO, Sam Walden, absolutely refuses to give up her hope for a better future. The film picks up after an apocalyptic event has rendered Earth's atmosphere too toxic for human habitation, and most survivors have since moved to the moon of Jupiter that gives the film its name. Meanwhile, the movie's protagonist, Sam, is the daughter of a renowned scientist who actively warned people against abandoning the planet, and she believes in his legacy so much that she stays behind to try to salvage the Earth.
Sam's situation soon becomes complicated by the arrival of a devastating storm, a fellow straggler named Micah, and a rapidly-approaching deadline to catch the final shuttle to leave Earth for the colony. Sam must soon decide whether her commitment to Earth will be stronger than her survival instincts. Despite being set in such a grim environment, IO is a beautiful story about the resilience of humanity.

Midnight Special is VERY VERY good. I've watched it several times now, maybe 3 or 4. Its not edge of your seat or anything but Shannon Edgerton are very good. It really makes you think about half way through exactly whats going on, and Im usually very good at "hollywood knowing" but I didnt quite get this one until the very end.

Midnight Special is probably the best movie on this list and I’ve seen all of them, IO probably the worst.

Anyone seen the Quiet Earth. I think it's from New Zealand or Australia. It's slow, but the tension developed is palpable. However, for those of you who need action, you should skip it.

Some very good films here i`d recommend most of them but had an issuer with a couple...
The twist and the outcome of it in Orbiter 9 really p***ed me off the whole rational behind it made no sense..
I liked Extinction and the twist ending i never saw coming until late but was seriously conflicted because after the twist i stopped caring if anyone died as basically they were all monsters..

These idiotic "evacuate Earth" movies make me roll my eyes when they are called science fiction. Earth becomes polluted so we move to Io? Have you looked outside the airlock and seen how the atmosphere is on Io? Let's spend all of humanity's resources leaving for an even worse place, it's such an inane proposition for your film. At least make it a bit realistic like "moving to underground or domed bunkers ON EARTH", saves SFX budget as well =p
