I totally agree! Considering this is about Emma wanting to go to Prom, she had very little screen time in my opinion. I was almost questioning if the Broadway stars had more screen time than Emma 😂 But seriously, it felt as if Emma and Alyssa didn’t have much screen time?
They were side characters. The actors are the main characters. They have the most character growth.

You OBVIOUSLY did NOT get to see the original Broadway production. The plotting & scenes are THE SAME except for some scenes EXPANDED in the movie. FYI: the 4 Broadway actors’ storylines/arc are just as important as Emma’s & Alyssa’s.

HOW DO I KNOW MORE ABOUT NICK AND KAYLEE'S RELATIONSHIP THAN ALYSSA AND EMMA'S? And they had this whole cute little dancing part in the stage show where we could see their chemistry 😭😭

That was only in the early version of the song at the Atlantic Theatre. It was already cut from the song by the time The Prom got to Broadway.

Personally, I thought the movie was nearly unwatchable. First half I thought was alright, but then the second half was just so cringe and cheesy, and I was expecting a little cringe and cheese because it’s a musical, but this was beyond what I was expecting 😂 some if it was laughable to be honest....This scene for example, was one of the times I cringed.

I really liked this movie but can't get over the fact that they cut out Emma and Alyssa's verse. First, its one of the best parts of the song, Second, it would've given us more insight into their characters which was really lacking (I knew more about the Broadway stars' lives than Emmas), Third, it could've been a really cool number/montage where everyone was happy and dancing and getting asked to prom in the background, but instead, they decided to cut the song and give it an ominous ending, which they could've still done after Emma and Alyssa's chorus

The heart of this song was supposed to be centered around the in-the-closet lesbian couple, but yet they cut their verses while keeping both straight heteronormative couples as the lead-in's completely in tact making them the new focal point of the song. Utter nonsense and so ironic given the subject matter of the source material. Same how the original stage show focused on Alyssa and Emma and yet in this movie, they for some reason focus more on the straight romance between the Meryl Streep and Keegan Michael Key characters. Dumb movie.

I could see taking out Emma and alyssa's part making sense if this was supposed to show how the heterosexuals are able to make this big declaration and it's this big exciting fun deal and right of passage doing promposals and Alyssa and Emma don't get to have that.. Cinematically in order to show that, you wouldn't have them singing in the same style as the heterosexual verses and visually you would have them in a more private setting (like the back of the bleachers)
I get what you're saying, but they could've sing it under the bleachers or some empty place to show the difference between them and heterosexual couples and how they have to hide. You know what i mean?

Honestly America must SUCK if it’s like this, a couple of girls at a school im involved with, in New Zealand. One did a “promposal” of sorts to the other in the middle of the school day, at a Christian school (but it’s called ball here not prom) and there was no consequences.
But why did they cut the end of this song & also Acceptance Song? :’) I was literally vibing and bopping during this after Alyssa said “& that’s a promise!” And I continued with “BEFORE I MET Y-“ and noticed it was the end and was like 🙂⁉️

This scene is so important & they really could’ve added Alyssa & Emma’s verses but no they extended the movie with more lines for James & Meryl which no hate but like cmon. Actually in the full movie he dance break is still there. But I would have happily traded it for the Emyssa (Alyssa x Emma) part. I know it would be a bit weird because we wouldn't know about their plan as the talk about it during the dance break, but Emma tells Barry about her and Alyssa's plan after the song ends so all's well that ends well and nothings is really lost.

i assume they cut it and other parts of the musical cuz the broadway musical is 3 hours long(really good for a musical) and this is not avengers: endgame so it can't really be 3 hours long as a movie, so i assume they were just like: hmmm emma and alyssa have a lot of stuff together but these discount mean girls people don't have a lot of other stuff in the musical so if we cut stuff let's cut the stuff we have a lot of, thus ruining the best part of the song.

Okay, here is my LITTLE argument for why they cut the song down.
"Dance with You" already established them. Movies cut reiterations to keep pacing.
They kept the lyrics that were new ideas than the ones established in Dance with You and then cut away.
I do think it ended up making the song "You Happened" get a short shrift which is unfortunate cause it's a fun melody, but I think it made their later upbeat love numbers stand out better in the movie.
This was the song that showcased a lot of their chemistry and they just cut so much of their part out of the movie
