I was a kid when they won in 95, hell I was 11 years old and the cowboys were just different. All I knew was jimmy johnson at coach and aikman. I didn’t start watching again til Romo and Parcell cause it felt similar but obviously it wasn’t lol. But we did look like we were close to winning again. Damn was I wrong 😂.

I think after Jimmy left it took a lot of fun out of it for Troy having to be the head coach. Jimmy leaving probably cost the Cowboys 2-3 more Super Bowls.

Aikman could've been selfish and wanted to throw 30+ times /game so he could have 4500 yards passing and 35tds, but he only cared about winning. He knew not turning the ball over, letting Emmitt and the big Oline wear down the D, helped their own D. So many games were close at half, then Emimitt would start breaking runs that were 3 or 4 yards in the first half for 12 or 15 yards.

Paul Ramon -- No doubt. Kraft and Jones are definitely different types of owners. Both have their strengths but I think you can guess my preference.

I guess you didn't watch as much of Troy Aikman as I did. Troy was calm, but he was also really big time on preparation. He believed full-heart-edly that's that's where games were won, unlike Brett Favre who relied on his incredible talent to just role out of bed and win football games on Sundays. Troy was the opposite of Brett in that regard. He was like Jerry Rice in that he believed that how much you work in practice determines how well you'll do on Sunday. Rich Gannon was another quarterback who was normally calm, but absolutely could not stand it when guys didn't prepare the way they were supposed to. And yes, Troy Aikman was calm, that is on point about him, but he wanted maximum effort out of first himself, but also everybody else.

Michael Leibowitz Slinging the ball yeah. I know he went to camps and stuff, at least till the end. Not saying he's the laziest, but he didn't consistently work nearly as hard as Peyton Manning, Steve Young, John Elway & some of the others, including Troy Aikman. He was probably a little bit better than Aikman overall, but Aikman prepared harder than Favre for sure. Jon Gruden, who was one of the Packers Offensive coaches in Favre's 1st few yr. in Green Bay, talked about how Brett would show up, but that he'd just coast through practices. Never would he stay late to work w/ any of the developing receivers on route combinations to help develop them in the offense, like Peyton Manning or Steve Young always did, or come to extra curricular workouts like Jerry Rice or John Elway did. The second regular mandatory practice was over. it was always just like where can I get a good beer in town? w/ Favre. That is sort of what made Favre Favre though, and he was unbelievable for so long, but he really didn't do things the scholarly way in games either, not going through his progressions like Young or Montana would, which got on Mike Holmgren's nerves a lot. Brett just wanted to make plays, which he did a whole lot of, as well as mistakes (tee-hee-hee!).

I always remember Aikman yelling a lot mid to late 90's and thought he became a diva but now see why.

As a long time Sooner & Switzer fan, I got to say that's a pretty good read on Coach Switzer's time in Dallas.

I have no doubt that the duo of Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman would've brought at least 4 Super Bowls to Dallas. Cherish Brady and Belichick. Once it's gone, it's gone.

They still would've lost all the free agents they lost: Stepnoski, Harper, Norton, Darrin Smith, Dixon Edwards, Robert Jones, James Washington, Larry Brown. That team got chewed up by free agency.

Jones couldn’t stand to see Jimmy get so much credit. Jones wanted Jimmy to take a back seat to his ego. Jimmy resigned as a result. Why are you spitting hairs about getting fired and resigning? You want a coach to “own” the team, team owners should hire the coach and sit back. Let them do their job or replace them. Jones prevented the cowboys from winning 4-5 in the 90’s, he’s actually preventing them from being winners now. Jones is a master businessman and merchandiser, as an owner, he is blinded by his ego.

It's important to bear in mind how much rule changes have benefited QBs over the years. Take Joe Namath. By today's standards, his career stats are unimpressive to say the least. But he played his entire career before the pass-friendly rule changes that were implemented in 1978. When he had time to throw, that man could thread the needle as good as any QB currently playing the game.

The thing with Tom Coughlin was he was too much of a hard ass and disciplinarian. It wasn't until he actually lightened up a bit and trusted his players that the Giants won those two Super Bowls.

Actually, it boiled down to Jerry offering a toast to their Super Bowl victory during a dinner with the coaches and Jimmy not “returning” the toast in a “you’re not one of us so don’t pretend to be” type of way.
Jerry then stormed out of the room, happened to stumble on 2 reporters having a drink (one of them being Ed Werder) and told them he was gonna fire Jimmy and hire Barry Switzer.

Barry and Troy respect eachother as men but they weren’t good for eachother in college or in the NFL. Two completely different types of competitors.
And there’s no such thing as a roster ANYONE can win a Super Bowl with. Barry had the whole locker room all but for one guy. Ultimately what disrupted Dallas’s momentum was that as toxic as Barry and Troy seemed to be for eachother, Jimmy and Jerry were worse. If either one of them knew how to get over themselves and stick it out, Barry would’ve never been hired as Jimmy could’ve continued on.
That all being said, being a hard ass like Jimmy only works with a loaded roster. Once the team begins to struggle, NFL athletes will turn on a guy like Jimmy in nothing flat. See: Bill Parcels and Jim Harbaugh.

I watched that 1994 game vs the 49ers. The Cowboys were down 21-0 in the first quarter due to turnovers. However, watching the rest of the game...the Cowboys actually outplayed San Francisco. If Jimmy coaches that team...I don't believe the 49ers win.

O'Donnell wasn't bad, he just made two really bad plays at the worst possible time. They were actually route miscommunications, but although he was a good QB he wasn't talented enough to anticipate the issue and could only follow through the process of throwing to the spot the ball was supposed to be.
Not every QB can be Joe Montana.

As another Eagles fan I wish he had accepted Reid's offer to come out of retirement and put an Eagles uniform on when McNabb got hurt in 2002. Watching Aikman win games for the Eagles would've been painful for Cowboys fans and I'm always in favor of causing Cowboys fans pain.

Agreed, it was Switzer's style that led to 3 turnovers and 21 SF points in the first 5 minutes of the 1994 NFC Championship game. If Jimmy had been the coach, that doesn't happen, because the culture of the team throughout the year would have demanded more accountability.

Many of those same players have said Michael Irvin was a huge voice in that locker room that everyone listened too as well. Longtime journalists Skip Bayless and Jeff Pearlman who both covered the Cowboys back then have mentioned this also. And in this clip where Aikman asks Irvin to suit up for practice despite being hurt so there's another voice out there to light a fire under the team also proves how big of an influence he was on this team. Even Charles Haley, with all of his personal demons, was a leader on the defense.

As I said, Aikman was the glue that held the team together, the supreme authority figure who everyone else acknowledged as the captain of the ship. Irvin was more of the guy who lit a fire under the team when they needed to wake up from their lulls. Plus, unlike Aikman, Irvin wasn't necessarily the best role model off the field.

@@TheBieberbe1iber The Cowboys offense was build around Emmitt Smith and a strong running attack to control the clock and exhaust defenses. Aikman didn't need to throw the ball 50 times per game. Aikman was clutch during the playoffs.

brettfavreify well I think it was a combination of three things. The tension between Jerry and Jimmy's ego, The loss of players in free agency, and Aikman's injuries. All of those are why the Cowboys fell short in the late 90s.
