Darryl Green broke his rib during that return and still took it to the house (actually broke it at 1:35 when he jumped over a guy; you can see him grab his rib at 1:37). One of the greatest returns ever.

Correct, Green injured his rib on the return and was rather limited for the rest of the game. Too bad McMahon stunk that game and couldn't take advantage. That was the best chance the Bears had on winning another Super Bowl.

Steelers win their first of 6 against Minnesota. The AFL merger with the NFL is proven legitimate with the Chiefs routing the Vikes in SB 4 (jets winning the year before helps too). Saints and Eagles win the SuperBowl after beating the Vikings in the NFC title game. In Super Bowl 52 Derek Barnett, the draft pick the Vikings gave for Sam Bradford, made the strip sack that would help Philly win.
Every SB winner since 2013, except for the 2016 patriots, have beaten the Vikings that season

I love Doug Williams. I have 3 of his jerseys, 1 signed. He also came to my 17th birthday dinner by coincidence. He had some of my birthday cake and sat at my table. I love his story and is one of my favorite players.

Mike Tice's very average 9-7 team beating the Packers in the Wild Card Round in 2004 is one of my favorites just because of how unexpected it was. I had no expectations for that team.

Broncos / NY Giants Fan For Life here. Oh, how I remember that. I saw that interview, and once Doug Williams was asked that question, I just KNEW right then and there that he would play his absolute best, which he did. I felt that the Broncos had a reasonable chance to stay in the game, especially after the AFC Championship game victory against Cleveland when Earnest Byner was stripped of the football heading in for a touchdown late in that game. However, once that reporter asked that ridiculous and insulting question, I knew that those players would rally around "Doug E. Fresh", as he was referred to by Redskins fans here in Washington, D.C. You can imagine how much grief I caught as a DC resident rooting for my favorite AFC team, Denver; and having all of my friends, neighbors, co-workers, supervisors, and even my own parents teasing and taunting me about that game for years. It was all good. My favorite NFC team, the NY Giants, gave me a lot of glorious moments to "return the favor" to those same 'Skins fans over the years. Peace.

Greg da cool one McNair was my favorite QB when I was a kid. Still remember working at my Dad's restaurant and watching him play in the SB on a tiny portable 8" B/W TV.
The season that made me a Vikings fan, and made Anthony Carter my favorite player for years.
It was my case... but I also never envisioned the Vikings never winning a ring... heck, Tampa got two and the Saints one and they were tragically bad for ages.
If at any point in the future we have 31 of 32 teams with SB rings, I strongly suspect MN will be THE one WITHOUT one.
I think that Anthony Carter is one of the most underrated receivers of all time. He a was great wide receiver, but he has unfortunately been forgotten.
The Vikings coaching staff never really utilized his full skill sets after the '87 playoffs. Kind of a shame, and didn't get a legitimate complimentary WR to take the extra coverage off of him until Cris Carter arrived in 1990.
Two of the most underrated HOF-level Wrs played in this game: Anthony Carter and Gary Clark.

The real most underrated receiver of all time was coincidentally also featured in this video. Gary Clark. Same number of seasons as Carter yet has 213 more catches, for 3,123 more yards, 10 more TD's, & ohh BTW, 2 Super Bowl trophies. Seriously a travesty that Gary Clark isn't in the HOF yet. Also a little FYI - Ricky Sanders has comparable career stats to Anthony Carter...

There's WR's before and after him that went into the Hall that people discuss to this day and yet he's rarely mentioned despite his selection. It's probably fair to say he's the Len Dawson of WR's. Hall of Famer who gets too readily forgotten.
Doug Williams gave the best quarterback performance ever in a Superbowl he will forever be a World Champion and a class act. HTTR!!!!
i don't know about "best ever" but he was 99% perfect with his throws that day. it seemed every throw was exactly where it had to be. if he was a pitcher this would have been a perfect game.

30 years ago and I still think about this game like it was yesterday. Strike years were good to us. Beating Dallas to go 3-0 with the replacements was great and to win SB was even better. Coming back from 10 down in SB and scoring 42 straight against Denver was unreal lol. Good times
I will never forget how my team lost this game. I watched with my Dad who was die hard Redskins Fan and me a Vikings Fan. Man what a game.
That 87 Vikings team was underrated
it was a Strike season, but yeah, 8-7 or 8-4 with their normal players (they lost all 3 with Replacement Players). 8-4 isn't bad, but not stellar. They might have won 1 or 2 of those games with their normal players (Green Bay at home, Chicago on the road and Tampa Bay on the road).
Before the Herschel Walker fiasco, Viking GM Mike Lynn put his full ineptitude on display by bringing in the absolute WORST replacement players of all the NFL teams that season. The Vikings didn't make the Super Bowl that year because of their clueless GM.
I just realized. The first African-American QB to start a super bowl blew out the Broncos. The second African-American QB to start a super bowl blew out the broncos. Haha.

One of the highlights of my lifetime was being at the Hall of Fame ceremony where Darryl Green and Art Monk took their rightful spots in Canton. The ovation Art Monk got still brings tears to my eyes. Seeing him pass from HOF ballot to ballot and not be inducted was shameful. It makes me so happy to know his legacy, and that of my childhood idol Darryl Green, will live forever in the Hall of Fame. I can still remember the rush of excitement as I watched Darryl Green hurdle over a defender and score a touchdown on that punt return. Its a moment, much liike Riggins 4th down run against Miami, that will live in my head forever. HTTR

And Nelson blamed everyone else for it. Said that the pass from Wilson came in too hot, and Carter broke off his route which drew Darrell Green over to him.
You can see why Carter broke off his route, he wanted to be there because he knew Nelson would probably butcher it and maybe he could get the deflection. And I dont get why everyone acts like that play would have won the game. It would have only tied it with the extra point.
This is why us viking fans have trust issues
it would be a bit like Boston Redsox fans or Chicago Cubs fans after they finally won another World Series. The doubt could be gone. Although in the case of the Vikings, they haven't ever won a Championship.
1987 was shaping up to be a miracle year for Minnesota. First the Twins won the World Series, then the Vikings had a miracle run. It’s too bad that we didn’t win, and frustrating.

I sympathize with Vikings fans - they had some cool ass teams back in the day, with Joe Kapp, John Gilliam, Chuck Foreman, the People Eaters, Anthony Carter...some great teams and came close often. This loss vs. the ‘Skins was a tough one!

Anthony Carter should be in the Hall if Fame. He was good and tough. Humble, but confident. He played when the defense could punish a receiver.
I remember where I was what I was doing and I remember crying like a baby. That game made me rethink the way I see football, I still love the Vikings but I don't take the game as seriously as I did before that game. It's only a game.

I think that was the play design but the RB cut in front of Carter. In any event, Darrell Green was in position to defend I think.
It spurred the Vikings to trade a huge bunch of draft picks to the Cowboys for Herschel Walker. They basically handed the Cowboys everything they needed to dominate the 90s

No. AC ran the wrong route. He should have drawn Green with him away from Nelson but he actually ranGreen into a position where he could break off his coverage of AC and meet Nelson at the goal line. Notice that AC and Greenare near the goal line area where Nelson is supposed to catch the ball. AC,(according to Vikings HC Jerry Burns)was supposed to run his route deep into the end zone to draw Green with him but he broke it off just across thegoal line. Maybe he thought Wilson would have to throw it a little early because of the Washington pass rush.

I've just realized that it seems like every year the Broncos win the AFC, the Vikings have terrible postseason luck. 1987 the Nelson drop. 1998, the Gary Anderson miss. 2015, the Blair Walsh miss. Even in 1977 the Cowboys knocked the Vikings out of the NFC championship game before beating Denver in the Super Bowl.

It was fun to watch. To give one an idea of how crazy the matchup was, it was one of those rare years in which both home teams in the Divisional Round lost. That wouldn't happen again until the AFC in 2006 when the Colts and Patriots pulled off their surprises, allowing the Colts to return home for the AFC Championship.
Not mentioned is that while the Saints were a wild card team that year, they were easily the second best team in the NFL that year, only to the Niners. So basically, the Vikings went into the second best team's stadium and blew them out, and then the best team's and dominated them, too. Maybe Doug Williams and the Redskins don't win the Super Bowl if not for two Vikings upsets.

They were looking for a reason to get rid of him. Jimmy's ties to mobsters and his inconsistent accuracy in later years in part due to his own biases had made him a bit of a joke. The NFL hated that guy being a part of their culture and it had to help CBS's relationship with the league when they let him go.

Everyone always kills Darren Nelson for "dropping the tying touchdown" in this game - but that's unfair. It was well-defensed by Green who was closing fast and probably had less than a 50% chance of success. People make it sound like he was all alone in the end zone and the ball hit him in the numbers and he dropped it. Totally not the case.
It was right in his hands and the ball was already dropped before Green hit him. Straight up drop.

The Broncos of the year in the video were just another in a long line during a 10-15 year run in which the AFC was the equivalent of the NBA’s eastern conference of the last 25 years.
All the talent was in the NFC, and the actual championship was the NFC title game, and the Super Bowl was just a formality.
So, the Redskins/black QB didn’t expose anything that first Super Bowl. They were just playing a much, much weaker opponent. Which is the case of almost every Super Bowl during the NFC’s extreme run of dominance.
Then, the NFL changed some rules, and parity was the law of the land at all costs, which worked very well for the NFL.

The NFC won them by an average of more than two touchdowns. Those are the facts. Also, the Packers are an NFC team.
banklikefrankwhite1 Yes and No.......because if I recall, the AFC's best actually matched up well against the NFC's best during the regular season during that run of Super Bowl Dominance. I remember when the Steelers upset the 49ers in '84, the Dolphins upset the Bears in '85, the Broncos upset the 49ers in '88, the Bills beating the Giants in '90 and upset the Cowboys in '93.....heck, even the Dolphins upset the Cowboys in '93. Even the Chiefs beat up on the 49ers in '94. It was just in the Super Bowls from 1985-97 that the NFC teams brought their A-game.

I was Sitting in the upper Deck of the Opposite End Zone at 87 NFC championship. That moment was in Slow motion for me, with time speeding back up when the ball hit the ground after Darrell Green knocked it away.
I will never forget.
I waited overnight in the Snow to get a ticket.
That Vikings D has been a bit forgotten, but they had one of the best pass rushes of all time. Montana got benched because he got beat up. They put Young in as he was able to run away. Millard 18 sacks from DT and Doleman 21sacks were terrors.

Boy is this play overrated. Not necessarily a touchdown even is he catches the ball. Even if he scores, it only ties the game. The narrator states at the beginning, "You probably don't remember this play." For good reason! The premise that a catch sends Minnesota to the Super Bowl is deeply flawed.
Yeah i posted a comment to someone about that because they said if he caught it,they go to SB. no they have a chance with either a td or a 1st down but even with TD they tie and pray defense can hold for a minute and again pray that they get coin toss because everyone who watched NFL before new OT rules know whoever wins toss wins game 8/10 times so yeah, they made it sound like it guarantees SB lol.
If he scored a touchdown, the game would not have been tied: It would have been 17-16. They would have to run another play to tie the game. In these parts, that’s called Kicking the Extra Point. A club is awarded an Extra Point after scoring a touchdown if the club’s place kicker can successfully send the playing ball through the uprights. If the club opts to go for 2 points, they must reach the end zone in 1 play starting at the 3-yard line. There are many options that could have played out with Minnesota trailing 17-16 after the TD: 1. Go for the extra point, and miss or get blocked; 2. Go for a fake extra point and successfully get 2 points; 3. Go for a fake extra point and get stopped; 4. Go for 2 and get it; 4. Go for 2 and get stopped; 5. Go for 2 and Washington intercepts the pass and they run it back and score 2; 6. Kick a successful extra point. As you can see, there are many scenarios that could have played out after Minnesota scored to make it 17-16. The only thing we know for sure is it wouldn’t have been tied after a Minnesota touchdown.

Its like night and day rewatching these old games i grew up on compared to today... As memory fades and new rules an regs come in over a long period of time, it doesn't feel like all that much has changed, but boy when you look back and watch the old games after a Sunday of today's penalty football it is something else! They just don't play like this any more... Pro football used to be a serious job really playing and running for your life, now its just an over paid weekend hobby show for mega rich athletes to do on the weekend... It just really isn't the same, its become something else

He's in the College Football Hall of Fame. I think the Pro Football Hall of Fame has a rule that you have to made at least one Pro Bowl to be eligible. I think this is the reason why Jim Plunkett isn't in.

Drafted him in '83 to keep his rights if he came to the NFL after his USFL stint just in case and then their 2 LB's drafted in '84 were busts and needed a linebacker badly for '85 so they traded him to the Vikes since Mark Clayton & Mark Duper emerged as All pros for Marino. OH I remember it. I am a life long Cowboys fan and I was watching wanting the Vikings to win. I hate both teams but the hatred for Wash is 100 times more than the Vikings. Nelson actually was include in the Walker trade to us. Also, Wade Wilson grew up a Cowboys fan so I was rooting for him. Wade finally got his SB ring with us in 1995. and aside from two years after he retired he coached for us up until this past January. I was talking to him one day about this game and he brought up this play. He said, and he is correct, it never should have come down to this play.
Thank you for showing truly classic Redskins and Vikings. However...as a young man watching this on live TV, the biggest classic act was Joe Gibbs kneeling in prayer on this play. I wish you could'a added this to the video.

I remember Joe Gibbs dropping to his knees in prayer before the ball was snapped. Great memories made all the greater because there have been so few in the last 29 years.

It didn't look like it plus Green was coming up to push him back. I remember that game well and the Vikngs were lucky it was that close. Williams missed many open receivers all game long.

What always gets talked about when it comes to the 1987 Redskins are four things: 1. Doug Williams vs incumbent Jay Schroeder. 2. The only team (credit to them because it could NOT have been easy to say the least) without any regulars crossing the picket line during the 24 day players strike early in the season. 3. They went 3-0 with the replacement "scabs " ( they're still the best team in the division that year anyway) for when the regulars returned and of course, 4. that unforseen 2nd quarter in the SB against Denver. What never even gets mentioned is the Vikings Cinderella run making it so that the Redskins avoided a trip out to Candlestick to square off with top seed 49ers. As proved later by the Niners blowout wins over Minnesota in 1988 and 1989, they were likely caught looking past them in the'87. As good a story as the 1987 Redskins was( and they were a good team and also overcame the QB controversy) I don't think they would have won out in San Francisco. If for no other reason the Niners would not have been caught looking past the Redskins.
SF always owned the Redskins in the playoffs, so we dodged a big one there.
So I see NFL KRplus page is reminiscing on significant games in history between the teams playing each other this week. I'll be waiting for that 1950s Lions and Browns video then. Lol.

I miss the old 'hogs' defenses, the 'smurfs', the 'fun bunch', old names we had in DC for the receiving corps and our defense. What a team with Gibbs as coach. And Riggins. Who can forget the Diesel.
Also the energy at RFK stadium was legendary. I could really feel it through the tv. Hey hold on to those memories for dear life

Loo Rawls Thomas the SKINS went 17-2 in 91 and were probably the best NFL TEAM EVER! They only lost by 2 points in reg season finale with their 2nd and 3rd string players on a last 2nd long FG by the Eagles. Also their other loss was on a hailmary by the Cowboys in the 1st half and they lost by a FG! Should have been 19-0 that year! Three dominant playoff games including crushing the BIlls in the SuperBowl. Bills recovered 2 onside kicks to make score closer than it was 37-24! Was 37-10 late in game.
The 89 Niners had Montana so I would give them the edge but for 1 season Rypien was very good and it was destiny in 91-92 for them to get back to the SUPERBOWL and WIN! The 84 Niners 85 Bears are at the top 82 Skins and some of those hated Cowboy teams of the 90's too!

‘91 redskins are considered one of the greatest championship teams of all time, not just by their fans but by NFL historians. their defense was dominant, offense set scoring records that year with all pro receivers and an OL that i think set a record for least sacks given up in a year. Rypien was the question mark. He had an incredible season though, his only one, thanks to the OL, propelling them to a SB.
All those Redskin teams in the 80’s were SB contenders too. Very close behind the 80’s 49ers for “team of the decade”.
