Indie games have been what i've primarily been playing lately, they may not have the same budget or pool of talent but you can definitely feel the passion in the games and that's what always keeps me coming back and supporting them!
Same here. You forgot to mention that they're cheap and go on sale pretty often making them even more affordable.
Some of them are crap.
@UCOX-lLmLwPP-A6J12lDhudQ theres alot of bad indie games but there's also a lot of good indie games
@@jorgem.9690 there are a lot of AAA games that are crap. Whats your point?
@@jorgem.9690 Focus on "some", whereas *most* AAA-games nowadays are straight garbage.
Unpacking sure goes good with the music XD

@@DragonMals Hi
Gnar!
So happy to see Ender Lillies as one of the best sellers of 2021. It's my personal GoTY and it deserves all the success. Kudos to the devs and hope that we will get a physical copy
I totally agree.
Yeah it was really amazing
Indie games often introduce new features, aspects, gameplay, immersion, and story-telling. That’s why i mostly prefer them now than big AAA titles who only focus on making the graphics and visuals beautiful and not the actual enjoyment on the game.
Edit: Oh and if you can, please play Eastward. Really great game.
I feel Nintendo doesn't do that as much. P5, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Three Houses don't have the best visuals but they got some heartfelt stories.
That’s one of the big reasons why I love Nintendo so much over the other major game companies: they always prioritize fun gameplay over insane graphics and book length stories.
@@asc3nded397 Wait, I did put Persona 5 in here .
@@asc3nded397 But like they said: Nintendo has games (for everyone).
You like fighting, play smash.
Story- Xenoblade or Fire emblem.
Family, Super Mario Party.
@@asc3nded397 well, also play station put a lot of effort in making good games.
I mean, GoW, Spiderman/miles morales, Horizon, ratchet and clank are pretty good and you can see the effort in them, PS give the time developers need to make a great experience.
Highly recommend Tetris Effect. The music, visuals, backgrounds, and gameplay is out of this world.
I triple dipped with this game
Its so good! I bought it the day it came to steam and then the day it came to switch.
I love it but I was under the impression that it's not an indie game?! 🤔
Love Tetris Effect. It’s a must own.
The multiplayer doesn’t work tho
@@Luckerz_- works for me?
Yep. Eastward, Axiom Verge 2, and Ender Lillies are great games. They deserve to be in this list.
I’m so happy that Doki Doki Literature Club + made it to the list, the game really means a lot to me
Trolling xD

It's so serial seeing it in a nintendo video.
Glad to see Cyber Shadow got some love! It was a phenomenal game.
Now it just needs a physical release
Sure does
Reminds me of the nes Ninja Gaiden. Might buy..
Still need to play it but nice Portal of I pic.
@@RainbowAceOfSpades
Indies I played and loved (not only from 2021 tho) :
- Ender Lilies
- New Super Lucky's Tale
- Evoland
- Crypt of the Necrodancer
- Mad Rat Dead
Seeing how unique and creative each entry was shows how great indies are~ there's not really one specific type of game that's destined to sell well
There are high-octane games like Cyber Shadow, party mayhem with Stick Fight, chill games like my favorite Littlewood, and the puzzley Unpacking
and of course it's still bonkers to see DDLC Plus
Ender Lilies is one of my favorite games this year. And Eastward
Really glad to see Stick Fight on here,it’s actually really fun with friends
The fact people are still expecting Silksong news on a recap video shows how desperate we really are
You are not we
But we all know if it released at any point this year it would have been here.
This year housed a ton of really good indies. More than I expected honestly
Ender Lilies is amazing. Great atmosphere, storytelling, gameplay, music. Definitely deserved its spot.
Cybershadow was an absolute banger of a time
Tetris effect on OLED is highly recommended
Indie games are the lifeblood of the current gaming industry. That's where all the creativity and the heart goes into, in a world full of otherwise mediocrity and corporate greed
lifeblood????? hollow knight reference???????????? SILKSONG?!!?!?!?
@@joedover302 bro no way 😳
@@joedover302 SILKSONG NEWS?!!?’!11!!!
Nintendo really does bring us the sweetest indie games since Shovel Knight.
Kinda black and white statement. I do agree that indie games can do a lot that bigger gaming companies don't do, but let's not pretend that there're no amazing games still coming out made by big companies.
I can't remember the last time I played a AAA Game. Indies have innovation and heart in it. This opened a whole new world for me. Indies made me enjoy gaming again.
It's not like there aren't AAA games that don't have innovation and heart in it though...
@@chunkymonkey7983 Most of the time they are choosing the safe way. Innovation means No safe money. Indie developers are willing to to it, big studios are doing it less with every year.
@@Bamschli Honestly
For most Nintendo games, that isn’t true, with other companies, yeah sure
@@Andree1x nintendo is the worst. Selling old Games for full price over and over again.
@@Bamschli Ok?
You are one of those guy that think half of the Switch library is ports when that isn’t true?
I’m so happy that eastward is in this video. I truly love the game. It def has its moments that it needs work on but aside from that it’s still a good game.
I was a little sad to see that eastward and bug fables were not in the indie sale at the end of the year here. Still a great year for the indie scene.
Eastward is 10% off, it doesn’t make sense for small Indie studios to make a loss on their games which are worth full price imo
Bug fables is on sale! If I remember correctly 50%
I love the rock music paired with footage of unpacking stuff in a bedroom.
So glad to see Ender Lilies and Eastward also on the list, the latter is well-known, and the former is a very hidden gem & best indie of the year for me.
Agreed
One of my favorite indie game titles of 2021 would have to be "Kaze And The Wild Masks". If you are a huge fan of the DKC games, I highly recommend checking it out, since the gameplay is remarkably similar to them while also being quite challenging.
Great to know Slime Rancher made it on this list
Both Eastward & Road 96 are such a gem, happy they're on this list!
I’m glad to see Road 96 as it was definitely my favorite indie that I played this year
hearing epic guitar music with DDLC gameplay in the background feels surreal
Littlewood was great! I really enjoyed it. Other indies I played this year include Gnosia (a death game ala Zero Escape), The Last Campfire (eerie little puzzler game), and Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion (hilarious Zelda-like). I've got Islanders on my list to check out!
Its nice to see Indie games get support!
So glad to see Eastward here, it was my favorite game of the year!
Yeah, just got it a few days ago and so far I'm loving it!
I was so happy to see Road 96 here. It's my second favorite indie. 2nd only to SoR 4.
I’d have to recommend everyone to play Road 96.
basically, you get to make your own decisions, and then later on those decisions will effect your gameplay and the ending. You can of course, restart the game as much as you’d like if you didn’t like your ending or if you would just like to make different decisions. it’s cheap (only 19.96 USD and I am honestly very shocked), beautiful scenery, amazing characters & a amazing storyline. I dumped TONS of hours into that game.
Best indie game I’ve played in 2021. I’m really happy it made it on this list.
I could go on about that game for a VERY long time, but that would be a very long review.
If you haven’t played it yet, I really recommend you looking into it! You will not be disappointed!!
TE:C has been a joy to play on PC, and if you have a switch, you should definitely experience TE:C. I've played it on my friends switch, and i can say, it's really good running on it
The music choice for this video was unexpected, yet very much welcomed.
What song is this?
For those wondering, the song is "Fight to Win" by Sven Karlsson.
Definitely going to be playing Curse of the Dead Gods, Unpacking, Ender Lilies, Eastward and Cyber Shadow at some point.
My time has been taken up with Death’s Door, Chicory: a Colourful Tale, Loop Hero and way too much Tetris Effect as of late.
Really glad to see Ender Lilies on that list. I instantly fell in love with this game and its style
Happy to see Curse of the Dead Gods in there, deserves plenty more recognition imo
Eastward was truly amazing and I couldn’t put it down. The characters and story are unforgettable and the art style is great too. Well. Plenty of others that I haven’t played yet on this list that I’ll be trying. Indie games and the Switch go together beautifully.
Now THIS should be the official eshop music.
Cybershadow was just too good. Im replaying it
Great spread of genres and graphic types. Good stuff.
This is very cool. Thanks for showcasing indie games!
Very Cool looking games and really great taste in music for this video. Props.
Played Ender Lilies, Cyber Shadow and Curse of the Dead Gods. Axiom Verge 2 and Eastward are on my list for next year :D
I had completely forgotten Ender Lilies was on the Switch, and currently on sale no less!
Doki Doki Literature Club is a surprise hit for me. I don't read visual novels, but Doki Doki Literature Club is absolutely amazing
This is just perfectly perfect
It's funny when there's all this action packed gameplay with the song and then DDLC comes on while the song continues. Lol
It's action AND drama!
Cyber shadow deserves all the downloads
The way I felt so connected to a character you don't even see or hear in Unpacking just by... well.... unpacking stuff. Amazing game.
Eastward is one of the best Indie games i played last year, even got the collectors edition to support the devs more and to have it physically for future use. The ending may have not been on point, but the stroy through and through was amazing. Love Sam and John.
Ender Lilies was great. Glad to see it here!
This year’s indie line-up was fantastic! And although it isn’t showcased here, I highly recommend Everhood :)
Is that on switch? I never heard of it.
@@tinahoefs1455
It is!
Everhood is an amazing game. Not that I really understood the story, but it still is super enjoyable, challenging and has a banger soundtrack.
Such a good game that I cannot recommend enough music and gameplay is fun and it’s a nice challenge
Glad to see Eastward is getting some love!
Great games, hardcore unpacking with rock music was pretty funny tho
Great to see Nintendo America celebrating indie success on the Switch - sneaky good soundtrack to this video, too
I absolutely love the amount of quality indies the Switch gets. Surprised Loop Hero didn't make the cut for this video, but then again it's probably the most recent. Highly recommend it!
Awesome to see so many 2D games on this list! Hope more AAA return to it
Very excited axiom verge 2 is on here, as I'm finally playing the first one and will want to play the sequel soon
Wow, great showcase. I saw 2 or 3 I might have to pick up
That was awesome, I LOVE indie games.
Ender Lilies and Eastward are the best from here. I have both and are both amazing!
Kinda surprised KeyWe didn't make the cut, but I'd say quite a solid year for these titles. I'm looking forward to trying out that Olli Olli World game in February. It looks almost as fun as DKC Minecart levels, but with various kinds of jumping and other moves.
Curse of the Dead Gods and Axiom Verge 2 looks stunning
unpacking is so good i can’t wait til they release more for it
Nice to see DDLC Plus here.
Just Monika
Eastward is on my list of indie games to get for sure
So glad to see axiom verge 2
Unpacking was one of the best puzzle games I've played this year. I'm so glad I bought it for my switch
Nice Pt.2
I'm glad to see Road 96 on Switch !
Great video and music
Now let's give these games the physical releases they deserve
LOVE THE BGM !!
Nice reminder for the games I’ll play next year!
As an indie developer, seeing all this awesome indie games is both inspiring and frightening. In order for Indie games to do well now, it needs to be A MA ZING
Can I ask what the name of the game is that you're currently working on?
@@magic2546 yes! It’s called Planet Cube: Edge
Good titles, I do hope to see Hylics and Hylics 2 on the switch one day
Nintendo, I rarely watch indie games but this music made me watch the whole video, really good!
I’ve only played unpacking littlewood and eastward, which were all great. I should check out some of the other ones on here too 😊
Hey, I just finished Ender Lillies. Nice 👌🏽
If interested, another indie to try is Dodgeball Academia ✌🏽
I can't wait to try Death's Door too.
Awesome moment. Great work everyone.
"Unsighted" its a great top down mix zelda-metroidvania-souls with time(it has an easy mode too), sadly its not on the list but I highly suggest it. Great song choice for this indies video.
I definitely want to play Cyber Shadow. Published by the same studio that made Shovel Knight which I loved.
Oh my, the music for this video is sick af.
Death's Door and Loop Hero are really great. Devolver always got really nice games.
Just recently I bought 'Hyper Light Drifter' (I know, a bit late to the party but who cares) the game is absolutely amazing! A must buy!
Great video and all, but one question: Why hard rock music? I mean it's absolutely funny having rock background music while showing some of the tamest games imaginable, like Unpacking, Littlewood, and Islanders, but I don't make the calls around here. Also please play Tetris Effect if you like puzzle games, Tetris, cool visuals or great music or just want to have a fun experience playing a game I couldn't recommend it enough
Cause it’s a montage. And you need a kickass song in a montage
Man ddlc with hard rock music TOTALLY works
Just Monika
Does Road 96 run better now on the Switch?
I'm really interested in this game, but the framerate in the demo version was horrible :(
We got a lot of good indie games this year
I am very happy that Cyber Shadow sold well. Amazing game.
Ooh, a new indie world, I bet silksong will be in this one!
Toree 3D and Toree 2 honestly deserve to be mentioned in this video.
The background music in this trailer is “like totally rad!”
Bug Fables and Hollow Knight are 2 of my most favourite indie games :D. While am excited for Silksong I can wait cause I have a huge lineup of gamea I still need to finish. Also Doki Doki is nice. Natsuki best gurl
good year for indie metroidvanias
also wow i forgot spelunky 2 released this year
Thread for underrated indie gems!
I'll go first with _Phoenotopia: Awakening_
What Comes After
A heartwarming short-story
Hm... is Bug Fables underrated? I mean, it didn't make it in this video (Sad but I kinda saw it coming), but I think it's talked about enough to not be underrated.
(Also DAAANG I didn't think anybody would mention Phoenotopia: Awakening here!!! It is absolutely an underrated gem!)
Celeste is far from underrated. The game was so good, it was one of the contenders for Game of the Year 2018. I still hear people talking about it to this day too.
Thumbs up for the music choice.
