@Despair City its speculation if this is a sequel. It falls under “its sorta a sequel due to hints, but we arent sure” lol. So technically yes and no, almost every SMT is a standalone. The connections are some what obscure or the demon relays events from the older games. But those connections arent integral to the story

Yep, these 2 and Metroid Dread(which I didn’t even freaking know was a thing until now) are basically the games I’m most excited for.
The sheer amount of people saying "Persona 6" or "Persona Spinoff" in chat was painful, and this is coming from a Persona fan who hasn't played an SMT game yet.
The people saying this is a persona rip-off is very cringe because these morons don't know that this series is what persona spawned from. They really need to do their research.

@@theAmazingJunkman Most people don't know much about mother 3 so that's not a thing your saying but still that game is fantastic.
My analysis of the trailer:
- Graphics are the best we've seen in the main series SMT so far. The UI feels like a healthy mix of DS and PS2 styles, not clogging the screen too much but allowing you to see all options at once.
- Like Demi-Fiend, the protag seems to have unique attacks with special animations.
- Demon's unique skills seems to be more present than ever, a good thing. I can predict the warrior demon to be Fionn since he used Mac an Luin.
- Like SMT4, no random encounter every 30 seconds, you can search or avoid conflict. A good thing to keep.
- Vitality FINALLY returns as a stat. With this I hope the gameplay will allow a real difference between frail and tanky characters/demons.
- Return of the demon affinity system from Apocalypse. Not a bad idea i would say.
- Magatsuhi seems present as a special bar. Not sure yet if it will act like magnetite, assist bar or "Limit Break" yet.
- We finally have the face of our fusion partner. Doesn't he look familiar ? I have a weird feeling. The fusion scene have a clear "tree of life" behind it.
- Yellow eyes after the fusion. The protag clearly is not human anymore. I would say he is closer to Jimenez or Demi-Fiend than Serph though, since he can't seem to switch on and off.
- The exploration looks like a good mix between Nocture and SMT4. Very open, give you a better impression of how vast the world is.
- Demon negotiation, unfortunately, isn't like in SMT Strange Journey, which was the best design in my opinion. At least they finally say openly to people that cowering and giving in to every demands of the demons won't always work: sometimes they respect show of strength more.
- There are typos in the names of some demons like Beelzebub, where the race name is stuck to the actual name. I hope its corrected before release.
Yeah I saw that name issue as well. It actually happened to Jack Frost, it showed up as FairyJack Frost lol
I’d go as far as to say these are the best graphics we’ve seen in megami tensei in general
I liked almost everything but the UI seems like it could be simplified, at this stage I personally think it's too cluttered but atleast gives a lot of useful information so that's a plus.

yeah I really enjoy seeing how SMT IV was like SMT 1 and Apocalypse was like SMT II. Had a feeling SMT V would have Nocturne vibes and was not disappointed.

@@zebraman9401 The first two boss fights in 4 are against the same demons you fought as the first two bosses in 1 I think. Lots of little parallels like that.
@@zebraman9401 Mostly in terms of general storyline. Getting to know allies that represent Law, Chaos, or Neutral and having to pick from them. Gameplay-wise it is more similar to Nocturne since it has the press-turn system and 3D movement.
EDIT: The fact that some people and all demons are sprites also add to that SMT 1 feel.

Of course they'd go back to 3d models between persona and shin Megami tensei liberation they have 3d models for a lot of demons now it seems like the only real reason battles were 2d (with a some exceptions) was because they had more 2d Sprites for the demons and it would be easy for the 3ds to work with especially demons with more complicated designs
i was kinda iffy on it bc i loved the sprites in the 3ds games but this blew my expectations out of the water, genuinely looks amazing
3D Models are bittersweet for me, though. It'll be hard to fuse away an adorable Pixie for something... less appealing to look at x)
The animations are so good too.

I gotta say, the main character looks absolutely beautiful in both his normal form and his other form. And this overworld gameplay reminds me a lot of Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine. I loved that game. They have to make a follow-up to it. Thank you so much, Atlus!
What if you're able to switch between the human Tokyo and the demon one? Like in Nocturne, you're stuck in the Vortex World and can't go back to the human world until the endings. In SMT 1, the entire game is set in the human world, just invaded by demons. In later SMT V trailers, they mention demons invading the human world. And yet there's Da'at, the "other Tokyo" present. So I think it'll be a mix of SMT 1 and Nocturne

Obviously they meant by the Switch's standards. For a handheld system with specs as low as the Switch's this is actually really impressive. Especially considering it seems to run at a pretty smooth framerate.

@@yansu841 the movement and color pallette and some of the demon models are same (pixie for example, her idle is the exact same animation in dx2 ) , they didn't close dx2 despite only ranked 50# in mobage industry japam for a reason, they use dx2 to breed experimental models for future game.

Music sounds dope. I like how Doi has improved his designs from SMTIV. SMTV might actually be building itself off SMTIII and the Qol improvements SMTIV Apocalypse had. This and Metroid 5 my games of the year alright!
Took me a while to really notice, but yeah. Some of the SMT 4 demon artworks were overdesigned, and I hope Dio is relieved that they are static, because I can't even imagine demons like Sanat and Centaur in motion (if Surt is already walking funny in SMT Nine/Imagine, just imagine those eldritch abominations).
The graphics might seem a little "generic modern JRPG" quality but keep in mind SMT (mainline) has been dwelling in the DS/3DS ever since the PS2, so it feels great to see such a good looking SMT.

Ahh so was I! I've been wanting to play a smt game since I'm already a huge fan of the persona series but nocturne's graphics annoy me so I'm glad there's a new game coming out.
@@mysteryboii4869 true but also depends on the situation cause I had times were the game either did something bs or it just glitched out for example In smt 3 the shop before you fight matador has a magatama that helps you resist force attacks but for some reason it didn't had it in stock so I had to fight matador with out the wind resistants except for one demon who nullified wind so every time I died I had to check if they had it also in smt 4 the boss minotaur and Medusa aren't really too difficult it's just that early game you don't get good demons with resistance to bullet and physical to deal with them which is what makes them difficult and the companion ai using non effective moves
Can't wait to collect all the Jack brothers and make them fight the final boss

My theory so far is that if the Demifiend was the Antichrist in Nocturne then the Protagonist of V will be the "christ" figure. Just based on his design he seems a lot more Law aligned than Chaos. The fact that that the SMTV MC design is also kinda feminine kinda adds to my theory since Angels and divine beings tend to have this beautiful androgynous look to them while evil demons are usually depicted as being brutish and overtly masculine.
Regardless I'm hyped for the plot. I wonder if it's classic Law vs Chaos or maybe they will go for Reasons as they did in Nocturne.

That was what i was thinking. Take into account also that God is apparently dead in this game as stated by Lucifer. So I feel like the goal is to try to resurrect god in some way. If there are Law, Neutral, and Chaos routes, then Law would be as to what i said, neutral could be eliminating everyone, including Lucifer, and chaos is siding with him. We'll have to see

Well you're not wrong, pokemon has been a vast disappointment for the last few years and the fact SMTV did what Pokemon couldn't shows the sad state of affairs indeed. I'd rather take four years of waiting and endless persona cringe (to me since 2 is my favorite) than what Pokemon is doing and that's the sad truth today.

As a person that has literally only played Persona 4 Golden and has no knowledge of anything SMT other than that it exists this seems like its going to be amazing! I will definitely check this out day one!

great way to get familiar with the game as well
just prepare to have a bit more of a tough time, SMT isn't a very forgiving game but it isn't as brutal as people make it out to be. Enjoy!

@@techno-- The Persona Games carried the SMT in the title for 1-3. Both Devil Survivor games do as well. Same with the Devil Summoner games. The dissociation between the spinoffs and SMT seems to be a western fandom thing.
@@MFMegaZeroX7 The Persona games in Japan never carried the ''SMT'' prefix and Atlus USA just used the prefix for Persona 3 and 4 just to help sell the games (Post Nocturne). They (Atlus USA) got rid of the prefix when Persona was doing well on its own Persona 4 Arena and 4 Golden onwards.
I've never played the series but pick this up day one. I loved everything I saw but what sold me was the song. This song set the tone for this game. I can't wait.
It's nice to see KOS-MOS getting more work after Xenosaga as a SMT protagonist.

To anyone who doesn't know and has constantly asked for Persona 5 to be on the switch. This is the main series. Persona was originally a spin off of Shin Megami Tensei until it became it's own series. Shin Megami Tensei has always been a Nintendo series. And Persona has always been a Playstation series.
Atlus may own both series but they respectively stay true to those games. Aside from the spin offs the main line games as always been a part of their debut platforms.
And before you say "but Shin Megami Tensei 3 is on PS4 as well as Persona 4 Golden on PC." First off PC is an anything Platform it can be Nintendo and Playstation. And Shin Megami Tensei 3 was released on PS2 is because Atlus and Nintendo had a grudge back then. I don't know what the grudge was about but it wasn't pretty.
smt 1-2 and if were on Playstation and nine was on Xbox but yeah I get your point that now smt is generally a Nintendo oriented series (aside from 3HD)

If you can't beat Persona on either Hard or (ideally) Merciless, a game like Nocturne (aka SMT3) will wipe the floor with you if you play it on Hard. SMT IV had less steep learning curve, but dying again and *again* between lv1-10 tends to be fairly normal to newcomers.
**Random Trivia: ** In Japan, SMT3 was released with no difficulty options, but American testers said the game was "too hard" so they created difficulty settings for the US/EU releases. However, calling it "Easy" could be seen as derogatory, so the new difficulties were named "Normal" and "Hard". "Hard" is actually the game's original settings.
