That is actually exactly what this is. It could also be Nintendo trying to advertise it to anyone who might not have known at the Game Awards, though if they didn't already know then they probably aren't interested. Super Mario 3D World probably isn't the best game to get people interested in Super Mario or Nintendo Switch.
Mostly it seems like a reminder, but probably everyone who cares didn't forget.
But actually, I have a better theory: The slots at the Game Awards may have been claimed before the impact of COVID was known, so maybe Nintendo planned to have more to reveal then, but due to the delays, all they could do was show what they already showed in the Mario Direct...which was probably supposed to happen earlier as well.

If Nintendo decides to show Mario 3D World, then there's really no reason why they wouldn't show the new content. The first ever Zelda BotW gameplay was shown at The Game Awards, Bayonetta 3 was announced at The Game Awards. It is not unrealistic to assume they would show new content and not just a spot for an upcoming game there.

That’s our problem with us Nintendo fans, we’re always happy with whatever they do (announcements at least) we should go crazy mad and ask for what we deserve, for example 3D All Stars, I saw LOTS of people being “okay” with Mario 64 being the way it is, c’mon, fan projects are WAAAY better than that, how come Nintendo themselves didn’t do better? How we are “okay” with it, they’ll do the same next year with Zelda’s anniversary because of it, that’s why prices are like that, why games never go down, we shouldn’t be too comfortable with them, but then again, most fans don’t think the same sadly 😕

Yeah, also it's the first 3D Mario game where 4 people can play simultaneously and Rosalina is playable in a mainline Mario game for the first time!

Playing Super Mario 3D World is such a joyous experience. It makes me feel like a kid again when I played NES and SNES Mario games. People that never played it on Wii U are in for a treat this coming February. So excited to see Bowser's Fury.

Well the 3D World switch version has 5 GB and the Wii U version has only 1 GB. With the new character movements and updated graphics and online mode, it would all in total only take maybe about half of a whole GB. So it seems the added content Bowser's Fury is gonna be a HUGE mode. It seems it'll even be way bigger than 3D World itself. Let's just hope
