This announcement was just amazing, the only thing that disappointed me was that they didn’t acknowledge that they put an Easter egg in Metroid prime 3 that revered to them working on this game.
I almost died when I saw the words Dread, this is the gamer equivalent to finding out big foot is real.

Metroid 5 (Dread) was a sequel to Metroid 4 Fusion for the DS, work of it has been hinted at in Metroid Prime 3 in 2008 but due to trouble with hardware they cancelled it only to resurface today.

Samus returns was remade very well by them.
They do amazing work if given the proper guidance. They obviously have amazing artists, designers and programmers but it feels like they need someone like Sakamoto to guide them in the right direction otherwise we end up with garbage like their Castlevania games.

It’s so weird. For years, all we had was the word “Dread”. Practically no other details. Yet that word alone was worth getting excited about. That single word told us all we needed to know.
To summarize the development of this game: “I’m limited by the technology of my time”
That’s basically why Metroid 1 was so ehhhhh in comparison to super

A lot of SNES games in general were basically "what we wanted to make on the NES but couldn't"
The game doesn't really look that good man. Visually its behind quite a bit. If they were limited by "technology" it was Nintendo's odd controller design. Pretty sure Sakamoto actually made a comment about how they couldn't see making a 3d Metroid (During Prime's development) on the 64 after holding the controller... XD

Metroid Dread was always that game all of us hardcore Metroid fans dreamed about and wished for, and the fact that not only are they making a Metroid 5 but it's actually derived from the original Metroid Dread vision from back in the day is incredible. Never thought one of the most legendary rumors in Nintendo history would become a reality.

When I saw Metroid 5 I was in awe, then when they announced it was Metroid Dread. I was just couldn't believe it. It's finally here and it looks great.

Remember guys, this game was rumored back during the Nintendo DS and Wii days.....
Well it was first revealed on an internal Nintendo software list in 2005 during the Gamecube, GBA, DS days, so even further back than Wii
I think it was even before that.

It's good to know that the game didn't actually take 19 years to make; rather, Sakamoto and Team didn't want to explore the concept until they were confident that the hardware available could accurate convey their vision of Metroid Dread, which I commend as an artist myself, especially compared to the annual release of underdeveloped Pokemon games.
Sakamoto was emphasizing the refined combat system implemented in part with MercurySteam's Samus Returns. It could be that Samus Returns was a blueprint for the structure of Metroid Dread.
I haven't played Metroid, but I have played Hollow Knight, which I loved. This game fits that "environmental storytelling", creepy aesthetic.
Maybe I'm getting my hopes up, but I'm really excited for this.

Games like Hollow Knight were inspired by Metroid and CastleVania. Metroid Dread is being made by MercurySteam, who has made both modern CastleVania and Metroid games, so all sign point towards a new highpoint for the genre

@@dip_trippy That's not PR talk, at least on Sakamoto's end. When he said the "technology wasn't there," he's not saying that they didn't have good enough hardware to make another 2D Metroid. Obviously prior handheld systems were capable enough. His issue was trying to create one with the concept he had in mind all along: the E.M.M.I.
The E.M.M.I. use pretty sophisticated AI to chase the player down, and that requires quite a bit of the CPU. SA-X's chase sequences were pretty scripted, as the SA-X itself, as an AI, is pretty dumb. Hence, they only put you in situations where you were either just waiting for it to leave, or being chased from right to left.
This game has you being chased by the E.M.M.I. robots in larger, open areas, and the E.M.M.I. can easily track you down, and intelligently reorient themselves when you try to fool them. This is clearly something that was intended way back on the DS, but I take it that the prototype they created didn't have a smart enough AI, so it wasn't convincing enough to be scary.

I really want to know if the game will have sequence breaks where a skilled player can do things out of order. I'd love there to be possible routes available to those who can successfully elude the robots.

The way it looks to me is that you can sequence break if you manage to stealth your way past the security droids. When Samus is caught in the trailer, it shows doors that get locked.
Fusion seems to be Mercury-Steam's favorite game in the series. They actually approached Nintendo with an offer to remake that game before Nintendo asked them to remake Metroid 2 instead. I have little doubt that they really love Fusion and have poured their passion into emulating the horror from that game into this one.
Scariest thing ever in Metroid history. But also very funny when it doesn't know what to do, until it almost insta kills you.
I'd never think in a billion years metroid dread would be coming out.

Three days ago, I saw that there is a Metroid Dread that was cancelled. And yesterday I finished Metroid Zero Mission. But today I see Dread is going to be released. Unbelievably lucky!

The Metroid Prime series arent true Metroid games
The fact that they kept the name Dread, a name for a game that was rumoured a decade and a half ago (a rumour that was confirmed real here), is really cool, and strangely satisfying in a way. Like it finally came full circle.
Also love that they’re re-exploring the horror elements of Metroid Fusion. Being hunted by the SA-X was always the best part of that game, and the lonely horror feel, although never overt, is kind of an underappreciated element of all Metroid games, imo. So it’s kind of reassuring that the devs seem to get that, and putting a focus on it rather than abandoning it for pure action (which other devs have done before...).
If they actually do a remake of Fusion I’d be very happy to play it and if they have the SA-X hunting you, that would be even better just like the EMMI
Dread was never a rumor, they talked about it openly many times.
@@rifasclub But not in name, did they? I seem to recall they mentioned having worked on a cancelled 2D Metroid before, but the name Metroid Dread I only recall from an old IGN report from the mid 2000’s. My mind is admitedly a bit fuzzy on that; it’s been quite a while after all.
I agree. There was always an element of horror in all the main Metroid games. I’m glad they’re upping this part. I really loved the chases in Fusion and Samus Returns.

I definitely want a development history of Prime 4 as well when it comes out. These kinds of games really deserve an art book and concept art being released, you know? Like, the concept work Android Joines did on Prime 1 was so interesting that it could be it's own catalog all on it's own, but an art book with development, level design, and scrapped idea WIPs would be absolutely stellar.

If they are going to put ridley in the game, they will do that for sure, because it wouldn't make sense chronologically otherways. The game is set after Metroid Fusion, when Ridley was already dead and his corpse was eaten by an x-parasyte

For real- for some reason when I was about 10 years old the SA-X encounters gave me literal mild panic attacks. This is a welcomed feature that sticks out among Nintendo’s more happy go lucky titles.

@@marcheharvey2301 Yeah, thats exactly what happened to me bro, it was truly horrifying, i had nightmares with the SA X's face and sometimes i couldnt even sleep when i was little and had to go call my cousin to sleep with her xD, even now as an adult it still creeps me a little bit, as a sign that it was well done in the horror aspect.

Not to mention the SA-X's mutated form at the end (second half of the penultimate battle, before the Omega Metroid)... Fusion was just filled with nightmare fuel, and I love it

Always nice to see Sakamoto give interviews and be given a platform. I’m sure this game means a lot to him. I also funnily enough have the same shirt he is wearing! I hope Sakamoto continues to have a visible role in Nintendo for years to come.
This was my first Metroid game and I'm gonna be honest, very impressed. I had a ton of fun with it and I'm eager to take on Samus Returns and Super Metroid!
If this was your first Metroid game then you’ve got no where to go but up (considering only the 2D entries in the series) cause this game was a hot steaming pile compared to the others.

Retro Studios confirmed that this line had nothing to do with "Metroid Dread". It was just an unfortunate word choice
I'm glad to see Sakamoto still around! To those who doesn't know him, he worked since the very first Metroid game alongside Gunpei Yokoi team and was the director of Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission. Since then he has been the producer and supervisor of all MEtroid games.
Happy to see he's working again with MercuryStream to deliver this project at least!

I remember looking at forum posts wondering if they would show Metroid Dread at E3 2006. Seeing this actually happen is so surreal. This is a preorder and take they day off work game for me
I’m really glad they held back on using the idea involving DREAD. That just goes to show how much dedication they put into making the perfect 2D game.

Hearing that this game will "complete the story arc" involving Samus and the baby Metroid she found has me intrigued, not just for Dread's story, but also the series beyond that point... But look at me, I finally get a story that continues from Fusion, and I'm already thinking about the next game after that. I need to keep it together; I'm SO looking forward to playing Metroid Dread!
There are many possibilities:
Samus fighting against the Galactic Federation's corruption.
An interstellar war.
Something to do with the hunters from Prime Hunters.

*Sorry if the text is too long, but thought i could share this to you*
I was afraid that the only remanants of metroids, or more exactly, "The baby", are on Samus´s DNA now. But since I finished Metroid Fusion a thing still worried me until now: the GF would make the "definitive being", capable of anilyzing data, transforming itself by any adaptation possible or any host/DNA absorption, for any military use. An Idea very temptating, knowing that, if the X parasite gets out of control again, it can be reduced to almost zero by Metroids, and why not, evolved Omega metroids (if the X parasite absorbs a enemy that uses Ice, the weak point of the metroid). If the GF would "refine" the metroids clones after seeing that Samus defeated the Omega Metroid on BSL was weak to ice, they would make that concept true. But now, with robots almost indestructibles for the only known being that´s inmune to the X parasite (samus), it´s not important for the GF the metroids. They just need to replicate what they did with the metroid vaccine on Samus, but with EMMIs, that´s the reason why Samus is being pursued by them. I still don´t know what is going to happen with the Chozo, but the planet ZDR would be important for the cultive of the X parasite.

My thoughts exactly. It looks so sick. In Metroid Prime, it just looked like latex, but here it actually looks like... well, I don't know how to describe it... It just looks incredible. Easily one of my favorite suits in the series, so it's a huge joy to see it rendered that beautifully
I love how they use those prologue cutscenes! straight to the point and gets you right to the gameplay like super or samus returns
I hope we can wear it in this game. It'd be awesome to have the option of changing suits. The Metroid Fusion suit has been my favorite of Samus for a long time.

It was a fantastic announcement. But even things like Shin Megami Tensei 5 caught my interest, and I've never played a Persona/SMT game before. This was just a banger Direct! :)

After completing Dread, seeing the ending and seeing the “new” Samus, I cannot wait to see where this story goes. Hopefully the next game comes sooner and again with Mercury as this game is amazing.
I was 4 years old when my parents offered me a gba sp with metroid fusion, i was so scared of that game it took me years to complete it, and its still my favorite. I can't believe this is happening!!
I never beat any boss in fusion but still trying to beat it till today.. im not good with any platformer games but still it is my favorite genre other than RPG/Shooter.. after Dread revealed, im got my hand on Samus Return and so far it good to play.. still in early level thou.

man any other developer would have compromised and released a subpar metroid game to make sales. instead they waited until they finally had the hardware to put their vision into a reality. goes to show how dedicated these people are to the series
Those devs have the privilege of being funded by the sales of other "subpar" series. Add in the fact that Nintendo always wants to bring something new to the table and the devs are lucky enough to be in the right work environment.
@@supersmugs2821 right. Plus, the Switch is a cash cow so Nintendo can be patient and do what they do best, deliver quality experiences on all of their own IPs.
There are a lot of dead IPs being revived recently by Nintendo. Most of these would've stayed dead if we look at their last sales record. Me personally, I prefer the Prime games over the 2D ones.

Metroid Dread. The one game everyone wanted, but no one really believed would ever come out. But it did, and not only did it live up to the fans' expectations, it exceeded them on so many levels. This game is a solid masterpiece and easily Game of the Year material.

The fact the Federation itself is chasing Samus makes so much sense after the fact that she not only blew one of their stations, but she has become half Metroid herself and has come in contact with the X virus
She's a human, chozo, and Metroid hybrid.
Hope Weyland-Yutani doesn't hear about her.
From what I understood the Federation isn't actually chasing her. They just found out about the fact that the x parasites are still alive in a remote planet (ZDR) and send the EMMI, that are research robots, to investigate, but they somehow go rogue. So the federation is forced to send the only person capable of stopping once and for all the x parasites: Samus Aran.
But we obviously don't know every little detail of the story, like what will Adam's purpose be in this game, knowing that his reason for existing is to support Samus in the exploration of different environments, like the research station. The only thing we know about him is that for once he will not tell Samus where to go, being ZDR an unexplored planet.

Was the technical restrictions A.I.? E.M.M.I gives me huge Alien from Alien Isolation vibes and that game used A.I. so that the Alien can track you, if I'm not mistaken.

I think that it is so cool that we finally know that Metroid Dread was an actual project that was in development in the mid 2000s, and that they came back to it and are finally making it! Mother 3 was the latest example that I can think of where that happened.
We need it on the eshop though still in America, Mother 3!

He just said it here. Yeah it was scrapped but the development wasn’t ready due to the technology so it was put in a small document article in Metroid Prime 3 about “Dread”

This looks to be taking *many* cues from Fusion, especially in the tone, and I am all for that!!
Metroid has always been about Isolation and Exploration. That's the core elements and DNA of the series.
In terms of Isolation, Fusion is by far the most atmospheric and clostrophobic one, but the game was constantly assisting us so it lacked exploration.
For DREAD, devs seem to have taken the atmosphere from Fusion which is half of what it requiers to have a good Metroid game. The exploration part will be discovered once we play the game.
Really promising though.

@@bensaadoussema9679 they wanted to Make Metroid a game with a lot of exploration and atmosphere but they couldn't due to ai technologie lacking so they made fusion who Always told you were to go so you could feel immersed with scripted events but now they probably find a way to do that while letting you free to explore without scripted events and thats awesome
@@bensaadoussema9679 Eh, I'd say that Prime 2 is the closesr in terms of atmosphere and claustrophobia, but it definitely still took a lot from fusion.

@@kurokoro Same thing about Other M. The gameplay was really good and I liked how they explored Samus' character, but the overall story was dumb and anticlimactic.
Dread looks amazing!
Also, Other M was more of a spinoff/interquel than a numbered entry.
I still enjoy it and hey later we got samus returns which for me is the perfect formula of retroroid, nothing against the prime games but Ill stick to sidescrolling where I can see samus and not just her arm canon.

I like how they mixed the organic fusion suit design with her traditional metallic look.
I'm not entirely sold on it, myself. The mixing of organics and metallics isn't the problem, but... I think... I think it's the white that's throwing me off; the Light Suit from Prime 2 wasn't my favorite design either. I don't know... white just feels too... sterile, I guess.
In any case, doesn't affect my decision to buy this when it comes out. I love Metroid.

You know, this game reminds me of something. Hear me out,
Dread was originally planned to be released in like the mid 2000s(2004-2006) for DS. But it never came to pass due to not enough tech to bring it to life. So after waiting for like what? 17 years? It’s finally a real thing now. This all reminds me of how Hey Arnold The Jungle Movie was originally planned for release in theaters in 2002-2003 but got canned due to how the first one did. And then we got the movie after about 15 years!
I guess this just goes to show,
anything that was originally developed in the early 2000s but got scrapped due to unknown reasons can be brought back to life. It only takes a matter of time.
Metroid Dread proves one thing for sure: Nintendo never forgets their old ideas.

This is the second new Metroid title to be revealed and released since Prime 4 was revealed.
I still think they're missing out big time by not revisiting multiplayer potential like they set up in Metroid Hunters for the Nintendo DS.

@@DrNaviMD Have you played it? Minus tanks and supports, it felt way more Overwatch-y to me than Call of Duty or typical FPSes. Had like 30 multiplayer maps, 7 different hunters I think... it was a fun range of strategies, and Nintendo is about as gimmicky as they come in an enjoyable way (psst... Mario, etc, lol). I respect the argument that maybe it wouldn't be original, but I still think (older?) fans would buy it if it had enough quality to offer replay value.

A 2D Metroid is what I longed for! I respect the Prime fans, but this is pure metroid in my eyes.
Im happy we're getting both flavors of games, hopefully we'll get more Prime 4 news later this year. I'm wondering if they're going to plan out any links to Dread with it.
The Metroid series will definitely be made in both 3D and 2D in the future. Also, notice Sakamoto has no involvement in the Metroid Prime games. It goes to show you he has no interest doing a 3D Metroid game.

Thank you Mercury Steam and Nintendo for creating this masterpiece of a video game. I've never been big into the franchise, and after experiencing the quality of this title I'm pretty disappointed I never gave the series a fair shot. This is now one of my Top 3 favorite games of all time. I know this may be the end of this story arc for Samus, but I can't wait to see where it goes from here. Mercury Steam, please continue working with Nintendo to make another great piece of art like this, the Metroid fanbase needs your skill.
Before Metroid Prime, Metroid was the best in 2D, so there's no reason for this to be not good.
Every 2D Metroid game have been fantastic, and with Metroid: Other M and Federation Force being the only subpar entries in the series, I have high hopes for this one! Samus Returns was excellent, and I'm looking forward to MercurySteam's innovations for the series being further developed!

I like the nerve wracking direction they've chosen to take in this game. It's not too often games are too scary on Nintendo systems.
And considering how both Fusion and Eternal Darkness (let's not think of what happened with the devs of that lovecraft inspired amazing horror game) were AMAZING, yeah, when Nintendo want's to spook you in a game, you're gonna get spooked! and this is BEFORE I bring up the Psychokinetic alien eldritch horror that is Giygas from Earthbound!
Please do more of these. That was awesome insights.
