Everyone is seriously dissing the graphics; remember that this game was made by a *two person* development team! I'm not sure if they did all of the artwork themselves, but even still, it's tough to reach today's standards of graphics with that small of a team.
To be fair, though, I'm really questioning why they chose that watercolor texture to be cast across _everything_ . Otherwise, I think the graphics are pretty acceptable for how many people were working on the project.
They were probably trying to make it look like a watercolor painting, it maybe looked good as a sketch, but instead looks badly made, with the models stuck to the design.
If there's something I can't really seem to comprehend, it's the gameplay and plot itself. It just seems repetitive and makes me feel lonely with the large world they're in, it's OK considering the ammount of people that worked on it but even some Roblox games have more intriguing ideas and maps.
I think it looks better the way it is coz it gives you that fairytaleish vibe☺
figuring the cheap cost of th game, too, makes it worth it to me. Hoping for updates to it as it ages. I think it's a fun game and got used to the art style after a couple hours. It's cute.
I've seen games with much better visual direction (simple art, beautiful result) done by a team of 1 artist and 1 developer in a game jam, so, the scale argument does not apply.
By what the game shows, it seems that team had a certain vision of "Cute cudddly world where everyone are cute and loving and cuddly", but... Had no real visual reference for it that hits any spot... Like, the cats appear roughly trying to look like actual cats, same with other animals - They seem to have more detailed textures and far less cartoony features than the people... The people are 100% cartoony.
The textures between things also alter their artistic intent... Some are water-color copy paste grid-texture, some try and do what old games did, attempt to make it detailed, like, with the trees, but end up feeling low effort... The tree leafs feel like they don't really relate to them.
The color schemes are all over the place, and since they went with shadless/cartoony style, the textures differences look more blatant and apparant... It's clear there's no artistic direction in this project, everything feels cluttered together from very different visions.
They didn't go 100% cartoony, that's the issue... They didn't go 100% anything in the art or world, it feels like they were busy creating more and more content, yet, not really having a clear guideline or direction as to what those assets are suppose to feel or look like, and they didn't try and remain in any singular art... Therefor, everything ends up looking extremely low effort.
Nothing feels connected or related... And there's a heck of allot of assets spreaded around, "we want more and allot more" seems to be the direction here, allot of types of animals and humanoids, allot of stuff cluttered about... They want an expansive massive world, yet... They didn't bother to follow their own premise - Cute and cuddly.
The trees and forest reminds me of some old MMORPG called "knights online"... That's a generic fantasy gritty game, that's not the right vibe.
The cats/animals might fit some 3D generic farm simulator of some kind, they have the proper proportions, fairly realistic-like.
The buildings/world looks extremely low poly... Unless they had extreme optimization issues, "smooth mesh" is a button press away.
The humanoids look cartoony, have a specific stylistic direction, and they appear completely unrelated to anything else.
And that's the key - nothing is related to anything... I can understand if the team had to use some random assets from the store, yet, even there you can choose wisely, it seems there was no artistic mind behind this, and it ends in something that looks, feels and acts extremely generic, let alone, break any form of immersion it might offer, since everything there is distracting and gives a completely different vibe in color/tones/textures.
Also, it seems like they had a massive case of "The more the marrier", they wanted to make it big, massive, huge!
Yet, just by the trailer alone, it looks repetative, void and lacking... Since everything acts the same, serves the same purpose, and as the gameplay clearly shows, you can't really do much in that massive world, and having a gritty MMORPG vibe in the background only makes it worse.
Screw graphics standards, five nights at fredies looks like a masterpiece, and that game was made by one guy, and that guy had a clear artistic vision, clear gameplay vision and clear "feel" he wanted to give, to a point where he also made extra content, secret lore, easter eggs and allot more.
The graphics and what the trailer shows is generic passionless effort at a POC that feels like something you might find walking around Second Life rather than a true indie project done by 2 people who knew what they wanted.
They should’ve knew their limits then, why work on an open world with a 2 person team. It’s admirable. But it doesn’t deliver

Definitely agree with this. I backed the Kickstarter for this, and I wouldn't have minded waiting a little longer for a better experience. Hopefully the devs work on some improvements for it.
Yeah! Especially art style and graphics wise. A more uniform color palette and softer texturing would’ve sold the game for many! The visuals turned me off :(((( I’m really sad coz I love TGE concept! Maybe they’ll update it
They already said on their Twitter they are working on a patch as they find out new bugs after it’s launch. They probably didn’t have a big play test team and it’s only a two person dev team so they might have needed to release early to get some additional funds.

I saw this on steam and bought it. As negative the comments are on here, I’m thoroughly enjoying playing it. It’s extremely whimsical and cute.

@A Blind M0use I’m assuming the switch has more issues then steam, I haven’t ran into to many bugs on steam, a few ones but they weren’t game breaking or anything. More so just looked funny

@Ava Guzman omg that sucks! I’m playing on the switch and I got stuck between the grass and the tunnel trying to get past the giant cat. I couldn’t move and I was freaking out because I didn’t want to start over. It got fixed on its own somehow though! I had to save and quit the game twice, then my character was back on the grass lol
what is it even about?
The fact that this game was made by a team of two people is admirable. I know I'm one of the few, but I actually love the graphics. It gives me such a cozy feeling, like I'm a child again. I'm 27 ☺️

This has potential, and it at least seems like a game that the devs are passionate about. Hopefully they can get enough purchases to get some money behind then and give it a good polish; I’d certainly buy it later down the road if it gets an overhaul.

@@kamen6009 except cyberpunk is one of the biggest games of the year with a massive experienced and well funded development team, and I'm pretty sure this is made by like 2 people who haven't made their own game before haha. I'm willing to cut them some slack!
@@Whitepawprint yeah, it's pretty impressive in terms of "small team producing entire game" and it's definitely has an element of charm to it, but there's still a sense of it being a little graphically lacking. like, for instance, the clipping, or honestly the cat's entire animation at 1:30 feels... janky despite the idea of a cat cartwheel being very cute, and similarly there's undeniably an overall sense of ambition and hugeness to it all, at least from this trailer, but at the same time it feels a little hard to appreciate with the same "watercolor paints" texture put on nearly every environmental model. dunno i just kinda wish they went with a more flat color approach for the art design (in the overworld, at least), i feel that would've worked out better
edit: just took a peek at the steam trailer for the pc release, and it looks a lot better there? not really sure why that is

Everyone’s saying the art style looks “unfinished”, I think the unfinished style was a unique choice and makes the game more wholesome. You don’t need outstanding graphics to make an amazing game. The whole point of the game is to relax and have a whimsical time, and the unfinished look just adds to the wholesomeness of the game.
Explain to me why there's a bridge there that feels like world of warcraft.

My only concern is that the world looks a bit flat and empty. Albeit cool designs. Not a lot of stuff on the ground that you would usually find in a town. Benches, flowers, plants. You know the stuff that makes villages or forests feel alive?

It’s absolutely wild to me that some people are giving this $12 indie game crap for it’s visuals, yet Pokémon SwSh sold insanely well at $60 and has textures that are only slightly better. The difference is that this is an indie game probably made by 3 people, while Pokémon is the highest grossing media franchise in the world.
While I agree that there's much better looking games than pokemon on the switch, saying that it's just marginally better looking than this game is just a plain lie.
In the end tho, it's the gameplay that matters. I can't speak for this game as I've never played it but pokemon swsh is the best playing game in the entire pokemon franchise, at least where it matters aka vgc.
It was made by two people actually. I absolutely agree that people have unreal expectations for this game. It honestly looks pretty cute! Even if people have a problem with the art or textures, they could just not say anything. They’re just being rude at this point.
In my opinion, in some parts (granted very few), this game looks better than Pokémon Sword and Shield, only slightly though. I will probably buy it, I could tell you how it is if you would like!
The game is really good, their are a few glitches, and the graphics honestly look a lot better than the graphics in the trailer. Controls are a little weird but nothing that you can’t get used to in about an hour. Overall pretty good game, if it seems interesting to you, I would buy it.

Well, it doesn't really seem like it was what the developers were intending to do. It just doesn't work for this game imo, there should've been more art direction and planning for a game like this.
Goat sim seems like a game that's supposed to be wacky and weird, so it works. But this seems like a game that would really benefit from pretty graphics, since I believe it's supposed to be comforting and relaxing. Take Sky or Animal Crossing for example. It doesn't even have to be Genshin levels of pretty, just... enough so it doesn't look like a roblox game.

@@Quandaledingleberg if they had worked in the graphics for longer the results would have been better. One of the most important things in game development - aside from budget- is time. They arent under any company, no? So i guess they didnt had a deadline. The game would really improve a lot if the textures were a little bit better, change the font and the speech balloon, clean the models movement. All these things could have improved the result by a lot. You could say "but there are only 2 people, how can they make all of that" with more time. Now it just looks like a beta project.
(Im studying for a degree in game development and 3d models, we often have homeworks to try and make some easy games using simple programming. Our deadlines goes from a week to 3 days, and exactly for that reason the results arent the greatest, but quite the opposite.)

Sad to see it released like this. Feels like an asset flip. I'm sorry to see the developers be met with this reception if they actually care about this project, but I don't know if I trust this to get updates in the near future. Also, editor could have been a little more flattering with editing the trailer to help them out.

The game is fun it's just full of glitches! It'll be a lot more playable after an update that patches bugs n stuff there's some stuff you can't really do and glitches that prevent the game from proceeding.
i’m playing the game while i type this, this game is perfect for only 2 people developing, you can earn money easily, make potions, interact with villagers, make food, decorate, talk to cats, edit your own avatar and play for hours !! there’s endless opportunities and so much to keep you occupied. you can also play offline so perfect for plains, car rides and more. the graphics aren’t the best but i think the glitches are so funny, sometimes the game glitches and you cannot touch any buttons but other then those things this game is perfect for anyone of any age. 4 star rating for me ;)

The trailer is what you get pretty much, (except for a few things probably) the only thing I don’t like about the game is there are some glitches and the graphics aren’t amazing.
This looks cute, but also of very questionable quality. The texture work is gross and there's plenty of popin

This feels like more of a concept than a complete game. I do wanna give it a try but ill wait for a sale. Also not a fan of everyone looking like they have a 5 o clock shadow. That being said being able to ride a red panada is like a dream come true.
It's such a cute looking concept for a game, but I think if they spent a little longer on it, it could look really great!
I know the game looks unfinished but it looks specifically fun to play the game incorrectly, like try actively harass and destroy everything even though that isn't the intention at all and it would probably be a blast.

It’s worth it the controls can be a bit janky at first but it’s had many updates since launch and the video doesn’t serve it justice. The music is amazing, everything is too cute. It’s hard to describe once you’ve actually played it but it’s amazing

For anyone complaining about the graphics, this is actually called Cel-Shaded, it’s suppose to look like this.
If you’re familiar with “ Jet Set Radio “ - “ Okami “ or “ Breath of the wild “ those are Cel-Shaded games. Since this is a beta, they might go more bold with the outlines of the characters & animals or it might remain the same.. as we see right here in the trailer.
Cel shading or toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering designed to make 3-D computer graphics appear to be flat by using less shading color instead of a shade gradient or tints and shades. A cel shader is often used to mimic the style of a comic book or cartoon and/or give the render a characteristic paper-like texture.[1] There are similar techniques that can make an image look like a sketch, an oil painting or an ink painting. It appeared around the beginning of the twenty-first century. The name comes from cels (short for celluloid), clear sheets of acetate which were painted on for use in traditional 2D animation. Do your research people.
This was a launch trailer so not beta. Just because its cel-shaded doesn't mean it looks like those games. People didn't complain about BotW or Borderlands or Jet Set Radio's cel-shading so idk why you'd assume the cel-shading is why people complain here. Game just looks bad.

I just downloaded this game yesterday and I can’t stop playing it. This is the happiest I’ve been playing a game in quite a while and it is very entertaining and peaceful.

@@HisAmicae it's not just the style lol, look at the lighting, terrains, decoration of the world. A flat ground forest without any grass, a room with big empty space. The mountains with flower baked as a texture instead of 3D models or particles. a city that's literally just road and tree, no decoration at all. The lighting lacks fog effect and len flares, etc.
I think the graphics are intentional, for me it gives it like an easthetix
Listen, games are REALLY hard to make, really time consuming and expensive.
For a small company or small group working on this, it’s actually really impressive.
I cost me less then $15, so it’s not priced like a full triple A game. You get what you pay for here, a small charming experience from a small start up.
Hopefully they’ll work out the kinks in an update.

wow, some of these comments are really harsh. I’m playing it now and I agree it feels unfinished but it’s a very small team working on it and I hope it will be updated in the future. it’s very cute and inclusive!

It’s the chin shadow but it definitely looks like a 5 o’clock shadow

Characters look really weird and almost uncanny
The animation for the characters is weirdly realistic and doesn’t fit the games style
The cell shading doesn’t really work with the art style of the game

I can't believe Nintendo highlighted this on it's Indie direct, it looks like it's in early alpha. My jaw literally dropped when they announced it was releasing today, it just looks like an unfinished mess.

But tbh, the texture and colors is all for a game when is this simple. Like the original animal crossing had basic gameplay but made it work with the town looking alive with more buildings, trees, house layout and so on. If they redesigned the areas and made the models eyes not so tiny they are barely noticeable it would be worth the money

Beautiful game and story. I love the watercolor vibe it has. Character options are plentiful and should suit everyone. The music is so wonderful and calming. I love this game so much.

The game itself is also adorable and the quests/missions and characters are all awesome! Some people say they didn't buy the game because of the graphics. Which is ... Not great considering you haven't seen/played the game at all
There's definitely some bugs to fix but this game was made with a unique and adorable premise and art style. I'm so sorry you guys are getting ignorant and idiotic comments by people who have no idea what it takes to make a game.

I see they were trying to go the cute route, but that’s about it, they tried. Just from the trailer I see tedious movement speed for the player, washed out colors covering what should be a bright world, and an inexcusable lack in texture. The devs certainly had the effort to implement inclusiveness aspects to the game but not much else
it's like they only know how to code and never thought to find an more artist friend to help or even look at color theories cause sometimes it's too much imo

Bought this on Steam after watching this trailer and I really like it! Conceptually it’s fabulous, but I do agree it’s not (yet) polished. Also it was only $12 which is fair and I’m happy to support these creators.
I’ve only been playing for two days and I really enjoy it. For the price the graphics are beautiful and I haven’t explore the whole entire island but the soundtrack,wow so nice,calming,relaxing and soothing. I love the music,it’s perfect for the game. In my opinion for the price you do get more than what you paid for. Overall it’s an adorable game and I’m happy I got it.

Bough it last night and played it for the first time today! Yes, it's unpolished, but that adds to the charm. The crazy way the cats' limbs break when you pick them up and shake them around is hilarious. This game brings me back to my game dev/testing days in college. It's the kind of game your friends would make and you love to play not because of its flawless graphics, but because of its charming little interactions with the creatures and NPCs. One more thing: the awesome combo of diversity and sweet selections in the character customization at the beginning of the game is unrivaled. Sure, you can customize characters' bodies in games like the Sims, but this is the *first* simulation game I've seen with _this_ amount of choices AND with _this_ level of sweetness.
Listen, if you're still disappointed with the execution, note this: there are different kinds of design - level design, character design, etc. In this game, the devs focused on UX, or user experience. To me, a game where I can not only pet the cat, but hold the cat, play with the cat, ride the cat, or carry the cat on my head? Amazing. There are also different kinds of gamers. Me? I recently (finally) got into Skyrim, and most of the game, I pick flowers and manage resources. That's just how I like to play (and it kills my gamer friends that I ignore the main quests, haha). This game knows _exactly_ who its target audience is, and if you're not that, then this game isn't for you. It never was. However, if you love the chill or heartwarming aspects Animal Crossing, and you want to play a game with ALL of the pets, Calico is for you!
TLDR: While a few things could be cleaned up here or there, here's the bottom line: you can either keep harping about that, or you could get the dang game already and appreciate the love that went into this unique little gem.

ya'll who aint even played the game yet: its super cute & fun. the amazingly tiny dev team releases patches like every other week to get the game up to snuff. its obviously a work in progress, but I still find it delightful to play even now. can't wait to see how it plays later on
I think the art/graphics are soooo cute! I wouldn't want them to change. It honestly adds so much wholesome character to it. Also, as someone who gets overstimulated visually and auditory, this game is so fun and calming. I can't play other games because of the overwhelming bright colors and audio.
