    You missed the most important aspect of this video. That is to show people why this watermelon is that expensive and is it worth the price. So, cut it opened and explain the quality of the fruit and so on. Who cares how it’s grown until you can convince the consumers this is truly a special melon.

    • @J1WE
      @J1WE 2 년 전 +42

      Japan has a big culture of gifts of fruit to each other. Expensive fruits are popular. Japan is very good at building speciality industries around things.
      Is it placebo to think it taste better because it was cared for better? Done unconventually? Think about their beef? Its special and so there's a price for that.
      Has this video not intrigued you to go look it up and learn more about it ?

Now Asian sweet potatoes, on the other hand, is something I wish would be more widely grown and available here. Huge difference in taste from the sweet potatoes grown in the southern US (less fibrous and much sweeter - almost like a candied chestnut) and an absolute delight.

    many years and got good results.

    I was growing up in a Chinese farmer family. There are many kinds of watermelons, it’s pretty hard to determine what kind of watermelon is the best. It depends on the personal preference, more water, sweetness and so on. For Japanese watermelon, or it should say that it is not only watermelon but also other Japanese crops, they are more expensive in Japanese than in other countries. There are some main reasons- cultural factors and economical factors. First, the government and the society respect and protect the farmer, they think highly of that kind of spirit which is called artisan spirit. Second, as a farmer, the income mainly depends on the crops, so the government and the market will use many methods to control the price, using this way to protect the farmer and the artisan spirit. Actually, whether the watermelon is delicious or not, it will not be main reason causing it to be so expensive.

    You pay for perfection in Japan. I once worked there (I never could afford such a melon on my salary) and saw amazing fruit and vegetables for sale. Often some of the best omiyage were the small boxes of exquisite fruits colleagues would bring to work after their holidays.

    The best watermelon I ever had was on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas. I'm not sure if it was grown there, but I think it was. So sweet! It's all about the soil in which it's grown.
