Aug. 6, 2018 | Bobby Carter -- There was a shift in Mac Miller's boisterous demeanor as he started the third of his three-song Tiny Desk set. It's the first time he's performed tracks from his new album, Swimming, in front of an audience. On "2009," he rubbed his chin with clinched eyes, looking like a young man who's beginning to crack the code. Backed by a piano loop and a string quartet, he reflected on his journey's peaks and valleys thus far.
I ain't asking why no more
I know I'll take it if it's mine
I don't stay inside the lines
It ain't 2009 no more
Yeah, I know what's behind that door
With nearly a decade under his belt at 26 years old, these words ring like an artist twice his age.
We were introduced to Mac Miller via 2011's XXL Freshman Class, which featured a special crop of MCs such as Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and YG, all of whom are now considered in the upper echelon of hip-hop. After his big splash, he's been able to find a groove and consistently release quality rap records, ultimately keeping his name in the conversation with the other young greats. His 2011 album, Blue Slide Park, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the first independently distributed debut album to do so since 1995's Dogg Food by Tha Dogg Pound. These consecutive triumphs amassed plenty of fame, fortune and insurmountable obstacles, causing a stumble here and there. Throughout the years, however, Mac has brushed himself off and put it in the music.
For this performance, Mac Miller invited frequent collaborator Thundercat, who graced the Tiny Desk last year and will join Mac on tour this fall. Thundercat put on a dazzling shaker routine and played the deep centerpiece bass line on "What's The Use?" These Swimming iterations don't veer far away from the recorded versions, but here, his lyrics seem easier to interpret under live instrumentation.
Set List
"Small Worlds"
"What's the Use? (Feat. Thundercat)"
"2009"

Mac Miller (Vocals), Thundercat (Bass), Justus West (Guitar), Klynik (Keys), Joe Cleveland (Bass), Kendall Lewis (Drums), Robin Fay-Massie (Violin), YaShauna Swan (2nd Violin), Lelia Walker (Viola), Melanie Hsu (Cello)

After a million listens, I just have to appreciate that I am a 55 year old man who grew up with rap music in every form and followed it throughout the years, but this is one of the few rap performances that actually work in the Tiny Desk format. Common did pretty well too, but rap just doesn't translate in this format as easily unless you are a master at both rap and musical performances. Mac was clearly both.
JID tiny desk was perfect too, Denzel Curry one was pretty good
Tobe Nwigwe was great as well.

My son just got me hooked on him. He bought a record player, and a Mac Miller vinyl (forgot the name) but we spent a rainy Sunday afternoon in his room listening to it, the warm sound from the vinyl, rain hitting the windows, and the bouncy, groovy tunes…it’s a memory with my son that I will hold in my heart forever ❤

Same the fact that I’m getting sober right now after 16 years. I heard the song recently even after being a Big Mac fan back in the day. But just hearing “it ain’t 2009 no more, yeah I know what’s behind that door” idk if that’s how he meant it but in regards to my addiction it’s helping me stay sober…like bro it ain’t 2009 no more it’s time to get clean.

@@smh02 yeah, this was the first Tiny desk concert (in video of course) i listen to, and always it been my favorite, it hurts me that i discovered Mac's music too late
@@marioalberto1371 my exact sentiments. I just found this tonight. And it made me smile and sad when my son told me this young king was already gone. 😭😭💚❤
@@HisLady1022 actually he died one year exactly after this concert 😟, you must lisent "Ladders" or "Dang!", both are great pieces.
Yes wiggle records very perceptive of you....
Mac's and Thundercat's energy together is just impeccable. I wonder what could have been....
Too little too late☹️
The fact that my comment made over 2 years since this video has been posted gets a like within 15 minutes proves the lasting legacy of Mac. Rest easy legend
i've been hitting thundercat after finding mac during quarantine. i didn't know they were involved together.... sick.
@@alexcheskie9446 They had some amazing connection. Thundercat actually interrupted his European tour to fly to NY to see Mac and play this one song. He headed out right after the concert. I was a Thundercat fan first, and I didn't realize how close they were. I mean, Thundercat was the last person Mac ever spoke to. The night he died they had just talked. Heartbreaking. But Mac lives on in Thundercat's music and in his heart. All our hearts.
"Music is a beautiful thing"- Mac Miller
One of the greatest tiny desk creation, "Timeless"
Is it wrong if I like tiny desk versions of artists more than originals? Sound engineer needs a raise
yea engineer is great, but just to keep it real... thats how mac sounds live all the time. ive seen him 3 times live, 2 times with total live band and dj scratching and it ALWAYS sounds that authentic. if you wana see NRP tiny desk sound/video engineer shit that blew my mind watch the tyler the creator one. the black lights and audio shit.... i thought i was trippin on somthing a few times, actually still cant tell if its a video feed filter or just the actual lights lol.
Totally agree. Tiny desk has the best sound for sure
dude yeah sound engineers should get a huge raise. but wtf, who has all the plug ins n outboard gear like a hollywood studio. and if ur an engineer working their your getting paid...
Live music is always better
