Justin Timberlake: Tiny Desk Concert

Walking into the room shortly before Justin Timberlake took our cramped stage, I overheard someone on his team wondering aloud if this was to be the most densely populated Tiny Desk concert in history - which is to say, the most musicians we've ever fit in a single frame. It's not, but we don't often find a way to cram in this many human beings (15 in all) and this much gear.
Timberlake has never been one to give partial effort, but this is a production befitting the occasion: namely, a set timed to drop concurrently with the release of his new album, Everything I Thought It Was. Eschewing the rootsier feel of its predecessor, 2018's Man of the Woods, the new record is a throwback, an epic and a blowout - and so's this lavish set, which scales the Timberlake experience down to 25 minutes of maximalist celebration and, when the moment calls for it, chiller vibes.
Backed by his band The Tennessee Kids, Timberlake's Tiny Desk debut leans heavily on his early solo catalog, as he kicks it off with two songs from 2002's classic Justified and weaves in three more from 2006's magnificent FutureSex/LoveSounds - including a set-closing "SexyBack," which finds the singer trotting out a megaphone in a truly meme-worthy moment.
By the way, in case you're wondering, the all-time record for musicians behind the Tiny Desk is a whopping 23, a feat pulled off by the fantastic Mucca Pazza in 2015. But Timberlake and company rival that classic performance's energy - in both cases, the real triumph lies not in the Tetris of it all, but in the way that many people still find ways to move, buoyantly and as one mighty organism.

You can't be serious
The fact that I read “the sound engineer needs an award” on nearly every tiny desk video means a lot.
Apparently there's three of them: Audio Engineers: Kwesi Lee, Adam Blackstone, Danny Cheung. Good mic placement and mixing. They always make the artists sound their best.
I need an award for sure
Sure does. Whoever it is kills it each time.
It’s the engineer himself asking for the award
It's good to see a section of the internet appreciate the unseen parts and not the big name idols

The megaphone sounding exactly like the studio track is both funny and SO perfect.

@@veralindsay Could've sworn the mix engineer Jimmy Douglass said it was iZotope Trash
His voice is legitimately getting better. Insane. Such a fun Tink Desk concert!
he's literally always had a great voice..
Guy has always been a great singer, for some reason some just love to hate on him and downplay not only his singing ability but overall musical talent. You'll hear things like "JC was the reason N'SYNC was good" or "it's only because of Timbaland JT has hits" JT is an absolute legend in the game, people need to put some respect on his name.
he was far from great in 'Nsync@@trevy7321
Jon, can you take ownership of Rocket League from Epic?
He really has come a long way as a vocalist. As a long time JT fan, his vocal was solid but not as good as it is here.
Major props to Kwesi Lee, Adam Blackstone and Danny Cheung. This is insanely well recorded considering what the setup is.
And kudos to the band for making it possible for those three to make this sound so good.
One of the most technically impressive recordings I've seen.
I'm sat at home and even I gave him a standing ovation. Unreal set.

The recording and mixing are out of sight!
It's Adam Blackstone. The best music director alive.

The Tennessee Kids are so underrated. such an integral part to JT's success is having this group of talented artists surround and support him.
They are not underrated. What do you mean?
@@tobberknudsen1agreed, they got play, even a Netflix special.
Are you aware that Africa is the birthplace of civilization and that Africa is the largest continent in the world and all of the worlds’ inhabitants derive from Africa? And do you know that European Caucasians are Biblically and scientifically the inferior race on Earth? Justin Timberlake is the least naturally talented in this tiny room but because he’s White and handsome, his privilege allowed him to be rich and famous. His career took off after he figured out that he needs Black people to make it in the entertainment industry because Black culture runs the world. The Kardashians are billionaires because of Black culture. So believing that TN is special when Motown is actually is special is why I laugh at White people! LOL SMDH!
Justin Bieber is Canadian and not American so that’s why he went with Usher instead of JT when there was a bidding war to sign him. Usher is a gifted vocalist. JT is a unicorn. Not many naturally gifted White vocalists in the world. And they don’t cater to White audiences. Definitely a JT fan but I don’t own any of his music. I can sing better than him my my group in the 90s was 1 in 1,000 Black groups. Backstreet Boys & N’Sync* blew up because they were White.

If you went back to like 1999 and told my young self I'd be thoroughly enjoying a Justin Timberlake concert video in 2024... I would have got angry and called you crazy... but here we are. What a talent. EDIT: to clarify, In 1999, I was like 14 and a total metal head. Boy bands were the bane of my existence. But I've come to enjoy a lot of JT's solo music over the years.

One thing I love about Justin is just how much he genuinely respects and gives credit to his band and backup singers. I saw him in 2018 and was blown away with how he gave all of them solos.
Same here. I always find myself watching the live band as opposed to the main act during concerts. These musicians are so talented. Glad he gives them the acknowledgment and respect they deserve for their contributions to his music.
I've never been massive fans of either, but I've always genuinely appreciated that Justin and Miley Cyrus actually appear to deeply, passionately and truly love music. It's not just something they happen to be successful at. You could reasonably sit down with either and talk just about any genre or era, and I believe they'd have a deep, deep bag.
If you don’t give the band solos you just don’t like music. That’s universal across all genres.
