It was really just Nastia's day. She stuck or had only a minor shift on every landing except for bars. Her beam routine had no wobbles, her bar routine and vault had basically flawless execution. Her floor was her weak event that day and it was still one of the best floor routines she ever did. I love Shawn and Nastia both. I do admit a preference for Nastia, but no one can deny that this was just Nastia's day. They both got to be the best in the world at some point in their careers, whether that was Worlds or Olympics. Great gymnasts, and one of the best all around finals of all time.
Shawn and Nastia got that friendship spanning more then 8 years all is good
Shawn has the technicality and power where as Nastia has the artistry and elegance.. 2 different gymnasts with 2 different strengths. But as a fan... I enjoy watching Nastia more.

giocurve me too I was so surprised by her because before the Olympics it was all about Shawn and then Nastia just blew in and got the spotlight with her gorgeous format and just being pretty much perfect to steal the all around and most of the individual metals

I used to believe Shawn was robbed of that AA gold. I think she's personable and is one of the greatest beam workers of all time with Ponor and Xuan, however Nastia deserved gold. Riddled with injury for years she battled through it all and came out on top with one of the best uneven bars sets WAG has ever seen. While now it's all about power gymnasts, Nastia had the lines and poise and work ethic that made her an AA champion.
Yeah I agree, but all four are phenomenal beam workers. Though I'd have to say Shawn tumbled with so much power on beam. Also, It's spelled Liukin.

I think Nastia just performed better that day. they had these routines with the same difficulty planned out for a year before olympics and the spot for AA champion constantly switched between the two leading up to the olympics. it just so happened that on the olympic aa final, nastia was the one who performed better.
but also like.. i've never seen an aa so close. esp now with simone dominating so heavily she could fall asleep on beam and still get gold, this was an exciting competition to watch.

I dont remember this Olympics so well being so young. But I remember how much talk there was about Shawn. Everyone loved her, and honestly at first I didnt even know Nastia had won the All Around because everyone couldnt stop talking about 'Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson'. For the non-gymnasts, she was just so much more popular. People expected her to win, and I think they were disappointed because it seemed Nastia wasnt as liked.
Personally I love Nastia's routines. She has an elegance and grace to her that you dont see much these days. Shawn was your typical powerhouse gymnast. I think this Olympics was so exciting to watch because you got to see two very different people and styles compete in such a close match.
Both are absolutely mesmerizing to watch, two very different gymnasts indeed. Nastiaβs grace and stuck landings got her that well deserved gold. π to both!!
My two favourite gymnasts! I have watched their friendly rivalry too many times to count! Nastia is my all-time favourite, and Shawn is a very close second! And both of them are just such beautiful gymnasts! I love the fact that they are still best of friends to this day!
The memory is still fresh. It was one of the best Olympics I have seen. I was a young teen and was so amazed by their performance.
One of the intense and best og all around ever I have watched! Even the chinese n russian like very enjoying to watch. Still nastia n shawn is at another par. Nastia with silver on bars, beam and bronze on floor. Meanwhile shawn gold on beam n silver on floor. They truly rules the og games !

Nastia's beam routine and uneven bars are rly good, better than Shawn bc it was more elegant, but Shawn did better during the floor and the vault bc of the difficulty. But it turns out Nastia made less errors.... so yeah, she won the AA
Miss them both it's fun to watch them being neck and neck in 2016 everyone knew Simone was going to win so it wasn't as fun π

Two amazing performances. I think Shawn would benefit more from the current COP and is one of the few gymnasts in history who could have a chance of challenging Simone Biles head-to-head in an all-around.

that's because they count the top 10 skills during that quad, now its just the top 8 skills and they gave so many connection bonuses since it was the first time they used that scoring system at the olympics
and beacuse of this rule Nastia had a 7.9 (i think) start value, where Shawn had i think around a 6.4

I have always felt Nastia fully deserved that gold but I think Shawnβs beam was underscored in the AA. If you compare between the event final and the aa beam set they are practically identical (actually I think AA was better) and yet she scored a 16.025 here and a 16.225 in event finals!

as someone who loves Russian gymnastics (Nastia being Russian born), and loves the more elegant, graceful side of the sport, I enjoyed Nastia much more and still strongly believe she deserved to win. Shawn is incredible as well, love her too!!
I know they were teammates but itβs too bad that Shawn had to compete with Nastia because Nastia was such a perfection gymnast but Shawn really had the talent to get gold

I just love all the people who know literally nothing about gymnastics commenting below and saying Nastia is a better vaulter while Shawn is better at bars. That is just ignorance, learn something about the sport before commenting. Landings and form aren't everything, difficulty is a huge factor.

i still get chills watching nastiaβs routines from this day. while shawn johnson is undeniably amazing, nastia just has something you donβt see in gymnastics anymore. shawn has that power that simone biles has, but nastia has that perfect execution and grace that you donβt see as much. her legs were always together, feet pointed, and her landings were almost all perfect that day and itβs just beautiful to watch. both shawn and nastia were amazing but something about nastia was so special and it set her apart from everyone that day.
I think Nastia was in a good day . She is a great gymnast. But I think Shawn Johnson has better routines and I think she deserved the gold medal. I think her UB score was kinda unfair, the vault as well. But I do admit that Beijing 2008 and Stuttgart 2007 was The greatest moment of gymnastics since I fell in love with this sport (actually, I dont call it sport, but art). I loved watching them two fighting their heart out for the first position. ππ

As a Brazilian, I'm happy that my country is emerging in this scenario, our warriors are examples of overcoming for us. In this sport, until recently, the USA, Russia, China and Romania dominated.
I think Shawn would have received Mary Lou Retton type of mania if she had won. Although she won gold on beam, can anyone think of another silver medalist who was more adored? I don't think Nastia would have gotten anywhere close to the same opportunities as Shawn if her gold had come from an event final.
Plus Shawn still received more endorsements and opportunities than Nastia despite not winning the AA and become the gymnastics "celebrity" after those olympics. I think it just shows having a bubbly personality like MLR and Laurie Hernandez, despite not winning an individual gold, is more appealing to sponsors and the public as long as you have the title "olympic gold medalist" next your name.
Shawn was NOT the better gymmnast, at all, the better gymnast should be able to leap.
Vitor Hugo Santana Really? What about Nastia's hideous cowboying on her double front? Crossing of the feet? Delayed connections on beam? Those things must have made her the "best" gymnast as well, huh? (And that's not even the half of it.) Nastia was incredibly lucky under this code mostly due to the value placed on the uneven bars, which we also saw the Chinese team greatly benefit from as well. If leaps made a gymnast the best, then wouldn't Khorkina have beaten Carly, or Komova over Gabby? I guess Aly needs to return her gold medal on floor from 2012 as well...π
imho khorkina was a better gymnast than carly, and komova was a better gymnast than gabby. they both, however, suffered bad luck on the day although i (and a panel of specialist judges) believe komova should still have won over gabby in 2012 as gabby was hugely overscored
Nastia was overall a better gymnast than Shawn (who's amanar was not an amanar, the judges were very generous there in the aa final), obviously Nastia had better bars. Shawn's flexibility is what consistently let her down, she loses a tenth on every leap (and other consistent errors like the massively out of control triple full, chest down on back full, step on beam dismount, handstands on bars etc). Not that Nastia didn't have issues, because she did for sure, like those ugly af cowboyed double fronts, but she had a near flawless vault and beam, decent floor, and huge difficulty on bars, difficulty that Shawn simply could not match.
Both are equally unique and talented in their own way. As an American I am extremely(&equally) proud of them BOTH!!! USA!USA!USA!

I love Bastia I even met her when she came to my gym and she said my beam skills are amazing and I was blessed
I say Shawn because on bars and beam you can spot nastia doesnβt keep her feet together and right when she was gonna land the trick on bars she almost failed because her legs werenβt together. Shawn has her feet pointed and she goes for like a fast momentum which makes it very cool and she keeps her legs together

These are two of my favorite gymnasts, although I do like Shawn more.
Two very hard working gymnasts. One had the shorter, more powerful body (Johnson) while the other had the flowing lines with the tall, lithe physique (Liukin). Just this day Liukin won but if my memory serves me right, in some competitions at the time Johnson won as well... just not at this Olympics.

i still feel shawn was judged unfairly by the judges in beijing because they didnβt like her style of gymnastics
No Nastia was only 0.2 behind in difficulty and she easily passes Shawn Johnson in execution. Even vault after bars it was Nastia taking the lead over Shawn.

In my opinion, Shawn was very underscored and deserved the gold.
NASTIA was elegant. That is rare in american gimnastic.
Personally I believe that Nastia did better on vault and beam whereas Shawn did better on uneven bars and floor. Theyβre both so talented and stunning athletes. Personally, i think that Shawnβs floor routine put her over because it was SO difficult and perfectly executed, but I can respect the decision.

Love nastia but that quad was a mess. It was like an experiment for the sport to first try out the open-ended scoring system. Shawn was better at vault, beam, floor and she just had to survive bars to get a decent score. Nastia's bars difficulty was insanely high and she hit everything that day that's why she won.
Is it serious that with such a hard dismount, such a better landing on it and no big mistakes, Shawn Johnson still got 14 tenths less than Nastia on bars? I know the landings aren't everything, but should the difference between the scores be so huge in favor of Nastia?

this era of CoP is why Shawn walked away with a Silver medal, theres no way that Nastias routines (besides uneven bars of course) even for this era of gymnastics should NOT be equal let alone even be remotely close to Shawn start value. Shawns beam, floor, and vault dismounts ALONE should be way ahead of Nastias.....my point is this CoP era was insaaaaaane, so many (like Anna Pavlova) desrved medals in the Beijing games but yeeeahh
