I sometimes talk about Ivan at the zoo I volunteer at because kids are familiar with the story. In both the book and real life, Ivan was given to a zoo. Due to being around humans for so long, he wouldn’t been able to survive in the wild so an AZA accredited zoo was his best chance. Zoo Atlanta did a fantastic job taking care of him which included letting him do normal gorilla behaviors, going outside where he could walk on dirt and soil, and having four female gorilla companions.
This book was frickin popular in my school that literally there were more than 3 copies but they were mostly checked. Like Jesus when my teacher read it out loud it was many people’s favorite time of the day. More than lunch and recess.

As a kid, i would go to the B&I and see Ivan. I always felt sorry for him.he used to scare the crap out if people. He would be all calm then someone would let their guard down, and he would thump his chest and run at the glass and hit it. Lol. People loved him. As a kid, I didn't know any better. Bur as i got older I thought it was pretty sad for him. I was really happy when he finally got out to see something of the world before he died.
