  • The Iconic SP from Mazda is supposed to be a rotary-powered successor to the RX-7. But it's actually a hybrid EV. Is that really a "rotary sports car"? And over the past decade, Mazdaโ€™s made rotary promises they havenโ€™t kept, so will this car even get built? Letโ€™s find out!
    In this video, we cover the recent history of Mazda's rotary engine, including the RX-7, RX-8, and Renesis engine, the many rumors and promises that Mazda made about its return, and the disappointment when it finally came back in the MX-30 R-EV. We also cover how rotary engines work, their problems, and why they might be a good choice for hybrid EVs. We cover the latest rumors about rotary's return, and the gorgeous Iconic SP sports car concept. Is rotary really back? Maybe not!

    You didnโ€™t mention one of the best part of the patent release: Rotary with a VTEC!
    Thatโ€™s right! Mazda figured out a way to completely control the intake and exhaust โ€œliftโ€ and timing withโ€ฆ. Get thisโ€ฆ a HUGE ASS electric motor. Since the rotors and e-shaft assembly are light enough to be hooked directly to an electric motor, Mazda engineers can change its rotation speed directly. Add that to extra auxiliary electric motors and the patented rotary engine will have a greatly peaky torque curve and an incredible throttle response thanks to NA engine. Same reason why Bugatti said โ€œfuck yโ€™allโ€ and made an NA V16 for their upcoming hypercar.
    With direct injection and EGR, complexity finally arrived at Mazdaโ€™s thoughts. Rotary is back on the menu, boys!

      โ€‹@@rahulmenon6073 I believe Engineering Explained did a video, but the tldr is instead of variable valve timing, they're doing variable stroke timing. Instead of extending the time a valve is open, they instead extend the time the rotor is doing a stroke by slowing it down at that moment, then speeding it up afterwards.

      @@XxXnonameAsDXxX Even according to Mazda's own released numbers, it gets around 31 mpg, which is barely any better than a non-hybrid from several years ago. Against its contemporaries like the Rav4 hybrid, which gets low 40s, it really sucks. I remember a paper from around a decade ago, and even assuming a spherical rotary with perfect reliability, its best thermal efficiency is still about 20% worse than a piston's.

    • @Nafeels
      @Nafeels 29 ์ผ ์ „

      โ โ€‹โ โ€‹โ @@rahulmenon6073Variable stroke as Appletank said. A large electric motor not only adjusts the timing between the different strokes, but also putting extra torque at the output shaft.
      The combustion event in a rotary engine also briefly halts and reverses the direction of the rotors before turning in one direction. Considering an infinitely variable rotational speed, the electric motor can either eliminate this โ€œhiccupโ€ completely at high RPM for more power, or prolong this โ€œhiccupโ€ and increasing MPG/reducing emissions.
      However, Iโ€™m definitely talking out of my ass here. Until Mazda releases their test bench research, we wonโ€™t see these types of technology carried over until a few years later, if any.

    This guy has completely ignored the shocking fuel efficiency of rotary engines, I donโ€™t have any numbers to hand but per unit volume of fuel, whatโ€™s the difference between piston and rotary engines in terms of energy per unit volume? Engine size is of no concern in modern day cars - surely itโ€™s all about how much electrical energy you can generate per unit volume of fuel?

    • @Appletank8
      @Appletank8 29 ์ผ ์ „ +2

      Yes that's the real limiting flaw of the rotary. Even assuming perfect reliability, the geometry alone causes it to be 10-20% worse in combustion efficiency than a piston engine. Stretched combustion chamber wastes energy into heating the housing, a moving combustion chamber forces the flame front to chase the rotor, and the holes required for spark plugs is an inherent leakage source. You might be able extract an extra % or so from slowing the power stroke, but it's a difficult problem.

    Title should be "will" not "is" as it turns out, there is no new mazda sports car, only rumors about one. I am very dissapointed with this clickbait...

      That's petty. If you don't like a channel that you can see FOR FREE, just leave. It doesn't make you a better person leaving comments full of grudge just because they stole your favourite FREE content. You should've pay before if you wanted them to keep going. Now it's late and childish to complain.

    Dude, you talk about a hybrid car, which means people are looking for efficiency, but then never talk about how inefficient rotary engines are. You compare it to a GM engine and say... hey look how little power this engine makes. So dumb. It makes that much power because that's how much they wanted it to make. Why don't you look at the 1.5L turbo GM made that was rated at 284HP? Because it doesn't fit your narrative.

      Porsche makes dual drive hybrids with 400+hp with an estimated 80 mpge thanks to the electric doing a lot of the heavy lifting in day to day driving so, if a dual rotor hybrid can get near that for under 50k it's going to do quite well.
      The Renesis peaked at 232hp naturally aspirated at 1.3L. Not many engines out there pack that much horsepower into that small of a package. What does that 1.5L GM do without turbo? I'm not sure what your point is.
      Throw a turbo on a Renesis and people are making 400+. 3 rotors clear 1000hp.
      The new rotary design has an advanced VVT like design to burn more of the fuel than previous rotaries to increase fuel efficiency. I doubt it will be sipping fuel like a Prius but, should be better than the 16-ish combined mpg I get in my RX8 and get more hp per rotor due to a change in the rotor shape.

      According to Mazda's release data, it has 400 mile total on average. its EV range is 50, its tank is 11 gallons. 350mi/11gal is roughly 31 mpg. This sucks.
      In comparison, the Rav4 Prime gets 40 at minimum, and an equivalent electric range.
