Bob was a great character for many reasons. He plays the realistic role of the aviator (NFO, specifically) who is NOT brash and loud, but still extremely competent and lethal. There are a lot of professional Bobs out there in military aviation (and other fields) who just do their job, really well, and don't have to be loud about it. He is totally secure in himself and doesn't need to be the center of attention to prove it to himself or anyone. His peers judge him on his courage and skills and accept him. He is the "ordinary Joe" character, but that doesn't mean that he's ordinary in his role or his ability.
Agreed. Love him with Phoenix. They are a great team. This film was so good. All the new characters were fun and interesting. Of the 4 major young graduates (Hangman, Phoenix, Bob, and Rooster), Phoenix and Bob were my faves.

Truth. Bob was definitely my favorite character for those reasons. I liked seeing how he was an awkward wallflower, had that "geek" look, only guy who kept his shirt on at the beach, but just as skilled as the others, an excellent teammate, and ended up being the football MVP.

Lewis Pullman has a good fighter pilot lineage - his father Bill Pullman is a former fighter pilot / US President who saved the world from aliens in his F-18 Hornet on Independence Day.

Bob makes sense as a call sign. As I understand it, if you already have a distinct, easy to remember 1 - 2 syllable first name, that’s your callsign.

I went on two cruises to the Med in 94 and 96 and I served with F-18 and F-14 squadrons. I remember that all fighter pilots are like Bob. They are not like Maverick on average. They are nerds. They have to be nerds. There is so much that a Naval Aviator has to understand that is academic that a person with an IQ less than 120 could not be a Naval Aviator that survives.

How come Bob's Squadron is VF 51 Sceaming Eagles they was disestablished in 1995 ?
it doesn't mean that squadron was only used in 1995. for example the sundowners was a fighter squadron that dates back to the 1960's but there are still some hornets and super hornets that are in that squadron. So it doesn't matter if it was established in 1995

It's not like TOP GUN made an effort to be accurate or pay attention to details. VF-1 Screaming Eagles in the movie was actually VF-1 Bounty Hunters. Viper wore VF-213 patch that was actually VFA-25 that never had Tomcats. Hollywood and Wolfman wore VAW-124 patch, which is actually a E-2 Hawkeye squadron. For some reason both Jester and Viper are wearing VF-33 Tarsier patch when they were assigned to USNFWS. VF-33 never had A-4 Skyhawks in the unit. And for some reason Maverick sewed a USMC patches on his jacket. That's like a USAF pilot sewing US Army patches on his jacket. That's blasphemy.

@@leoperidot482 maverick Squadron patch from the original was from a Hawkeye Squadron and Iceman Squadron patch was from VFA 25 Fist of the Fleet who never flew the Tomcat back then I think they the was flying the legacy Hornet ?

Since "Bob" is a Radar Intercept Officer or Weapon Systems Officer, he's under different rules because he's not in control of the aircraft's flight systems.
You can wear glasses as a pilot. Your vision has to correct to 20/20 vision with glasses on and with a spare handy.

Today’s warfare isn’t about fast jets and sexy pilots. It’s about drones and stealth guerilla tactics. I’d say this is an outdated storyline.
what don't even know what the accurate timeline is, and "drones and stealth guerilla tactics" is inaccurate because the world hasn't had a 1st world country vs 1st country in decades. It's been 1st world country attacking 3rd world / war-torn "low tech enemies". Depends on "who" (probably russia lol) the enemy is in this movie.
