Just watched in the theater and Monica Barbaro absolutely nailed the role. So many memorable scenes and my favorites are extremely cute scene where she was dancing and singing in front of piano with others and and that very charismatic hand sign that she did in the jet fighter right before the mission take off. I am sure she will be a major star and a household name in near future.
Couldn't agree more. Phoenix stole the show in my opinion: she was skilled, levelheaded and likable. Monica portrayed her as a professional and a loyal friend who didn't need to overcompensate for being one of two female pilots in the group. I'm sure this role will catapult Monica's career to the next level (pun intended), and I intend to watch some of her earlier roles pretty soon.
Totally agree with both of you. I did 26 years US Air Force as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer and was privileged enough to be the Squadron Maintenance Officer in an F-15 fighter squadron. Phoenix just nailed her role and I loved her character. Pure professionalism.
Barbaro was so strong in this, I reckon she’s got a good future ahead

I see the movie is carrying on the tradition of giving most of these pilots cool ass callsigns. From what I read, in the real military, callsigns are usually derogatory because of something stupid you said or did, or it's a play on word of your name. Admiral Kazansky got rid of his old callsign. Now everyone calls him Batman.
When TOP GUN was being made the pilot who took Tom Cruise and other actors up, his name was Bozo.
Air Force tradition, which I think is similair to the Navy, has it that your first callsign is derogatory, until you earn a bettern one. I was Goat or Goat Boy, on account of my last name. That was until a new squadron CO realized how horrific my Dad jokes were, and dubbed me Punchline

Todays words have so many different meanings now. GOAT could be a dumb animal or Greatest Of All Time. Maverick once meant abandoned calf. Now it's synonymous with being a rebel.

Just watched imax today , it’s incredible
So is Phoenix call sign from the AIM-54 Phoenix missiles carried on the F-14 Tomcat? Also her little mishap I guess. I liked her role in the film, I'm pretty sure other female fighter pilots appreciated her authenticity to her role. I've only met a female pilot in her first year of training a few weeks ago before the film released. She's attending the Naval Academy, has a similar demeanor.

Yup. That was one of the things that made the original one great. Because of that I knew what a RIO was when I was 7 years old. Using jargon people don't really understand is cool, using Hollywood slang for the general public comes off feeling cheap.

Interestingly, most female fighter pilots are often a lot better than their male counterparts, probably because of how difficult it is to get by in the male dominated scene, but still.

Women can fly fighter jets, so I don't see that it's a big deal in that respect. However, if this movie has a Top Gun competition that she wins, then I'll call foul. Traditionally female jet pilots haven't been very good, so if they have one in this movie that's completely badass and the best of everything, then it's pretty suspect.

This is nothing new and groundbreaking. This also isn't 1950....and there isn't any indication her character is in a leadership role. Even if she was, so what? How does that make the film woke? 🤨
