I was a TA at University of Illinois during grad school and still left over 50k in debt, and they tried to argue we shouldn't get tuition assistance the last semester and I spent months in arbitration just to get a couple thousand.

It depends on your major. If you're getting a STEM degree, probably. If you're getting a BA without getting any practical experience like an internship, then probably not. I write this as someone with a BA who has a job that doesn't require it.

@@alankoslowski9473 The problem is that everyone get pushed into STEM so now there are a ton of people with STEM degrees and not enough jobs to for them so it's hyper competitive at least in my state. There are level 1 help desks roles in my area that requires a bachelor degree to do what is essentially gathering information and passing it to the higher tier if it's not a simple fix. the fun part is that they pay like $12 an hour if you're lucky. What needs to happen is a institutional shift in the way education is viewed and funded so people don't go into debt just pursuing a degree they want at any college in the country.

Actually most Silicon Valley big names are changing their job descriptions to 4 year bachelors or equivalent work experience or projects. Which means you have to grind it out with online free courses and build your own project portfolio to stand out but it’s possible

There are several criticisms toward Liberal Arts education systems, but the difference in cost at $55k/y 3-year university degree (international timeline for most degrees) vs. 4-year (Liberal Arts) is $55k.
The difference in a $2k/y (common international cost) versus $55k/y for a 4-year degree is $218k.
Even if one were to go with inflation-adjusted prices of only US universities, the value comes out ridiculous. Ivy league schools in 1960 were ~$2k/y. Inflation-adjusted, that's ~$20k/y now. $55k/y for 4 years vs. $20k/y is $140k/y.

If they were more than a drop in the bucket, the cost of the few 3-year schools in the US would be closer to international and 1960 (inflation-adjusted) standards. However, they aren't.

Because higher university is privatized. They compete with each other to make their campuses more attractive and some of these extra amenities come from non tutition fees. Like I go to UC and we had to pay like extra $500 fee for a new swimming pool.

Sadly, it's been an arms race for decades. Given two schools of similar academic quality, many students will choose the one with the fun amenities, rather than the one with basic dorms and a mere swimming pool at the gym.

Here in the west coast of the states the MINIMUM of trade school is $25,000 for attending a 6-8 straight months with MAYBE 3 days of either tardy or sick days...then to even get the license of whatever you are trying to get is another $370 minimum. Books are $50 used, $100+ new. Just remember they DO NOT REFUND ANYTHING

I agree with your feelings, but I have to point out that this would only benefit ONE class. A huge portion of the endowment is put into longer-term investments that make money by themselves, so that next year the endowment will be as large or larger. This is explained well by the phrase, "spend money to make money." They support themselves and their students with the revenues from these investments as well as the massive interest on the accounts. Spending a large portion of it, let alone all of it, in one place would hurt the students' aid more than it would help them.

It’s not cooperate greed it’s the government’s fault. The solution to the problem is to stop giving out student loans. When the government started giving out student loans, college became affordable to more people, so the demand for college increased.
In response, colleges jacked up prices because people could afford to go with student loans.
If we stop giving out student loans, not as many people will be able to afford it, so demand will go down. In order for colleges to stay in business they will need to drop their prices.
This is guaranteed to work it’s basic economics.

The people with high paying jobs will have plenty of money to fall back on, can force higher pay because there are few people to do those jobs, and the people who can no longer go to college can do the low paying jobs.
Maybe if they're lucky, they'll commit suicide and leave more money to everyone else and give their dead end, mind numbing and unappreciated job to someone else, who will likely be talked down to and degraded because they didn't go to college. They will be unable to get money to sent their children to college, and repeat the cycle.
Basic economics? The rich don't care how much money they have to spend; they can afford it. The college may hike up prices, but the people able to pay will do so. Make college free, and anyone who wants to go can go. Pass or fail on your own merits. Make college free, and more will go because there's really no reason not to. It'll raise the collective intelligence of the USA, though, and lord knows we can't have THAT.

This is confusing, why say system? In any society larger than a small town, self-interest will become the dominant motivator for the vast majority of individuals. Everyone is trying to get on top, it is human nature. If Harvard can afford to not allow students to defer a year they absolutely will, unless the negative implications outway the profit motivators (ie empathy concerns or future profit lost). Only in our individual interactions can people become human with each other.

yup, because I took AP classes and did dual enrollment, I found out that I only need to get one or two semesters to get my Associates and go to a university.

That's all bullshit. I am a heavy duty mechanic and my wife is a finance officer with a diploma. We make over $150,000 a year and live very comfortably. We work Monday to Friday 9 to 5 jobs. I'm 39, have a pension, investments in mutual funds and zero debt. I live in a $400,000 house, which I intend to pay off in only 10 years, and both of us never went to university.
The propaganda telling people they need to go to university is just bullshit. Go to a trade school or community college. Cheaper and you will probably come away smarter than the average university student. Plus you won't have hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt.

Here in Mexico, we pay 25 mexican cents (like a US 1c) a year for tuition. But once you try to become a professor, you start in a program as a kind of assistant with a salary of 70 monthly dollars (but with medical care). After that, you need masters or PhD to fight for a place as an adjutant earning like a hundred per month with little to no chance of EVER getting a tenure (or until someone dies of old age)...
Still a bad situation, but at least we don't spend in lazy rivers

Abdul Aden - That’s just their way of weeding out a large swath of people who aren’t serious, otherwise they’d be getting tens of thousands of applications for a routine job. If you’re serious, reliable, and can sell yourself as to why you’d make the best candidate and f*ing deliver (and not f** sh*t up) once you are hired - go ahead and apply anyway. I’ve landed many jobs where the ‘requirements’ listed on the application were largely flexible, negotiable, or irrelevant altogether. Put yourself on the other side’s shoes - if you’re working hard to honestly fill a much needed position, would you hire someone without a solid track record? The only other way is if that person has similar experience or can prove competence with spec projects they put together on their own time. You’re best bet without a degree is to work for a startup or a small mom & pop firm, get yourself some equivalent and transferable experience - and only THEN apply for Tesla. Otherwise, you’re competing with thousands of other grads from top named uni’s (especially in current time where folks lower their standards). Realize that’s instant gratification culture or entitlement if you want to work for the best of the best just starting out, but don’t actually offer the best of the best against a sea of other candidates. Just remember that sales is huge, you’ve got to STAND OUT. You got to sell it and be confident going in there that you’re a professional who gets sh*t done, because any doubts or insecurities you have about your qualifications or ability to perform will imprint on the person who’s job it is to hire you.
If all else fails, just know there’s lots of BS and politics involved - especially for an established firm with ‘professional’ HR whose sole mission is CYA. If the company has tons of red tape and HR, chances are that they are too big and well established at that point (meaning they have the pick of the litter and will make it harder and harder for new candidates to apply by raising the min. requirements), and I’d suggest looking elsewhere. Keep in mind, in the early stage startup days, Elon was probably screening every single candidate personally. Now he ain’t got time for that - he’s too busy launching rockets into outer space. His people do that for him, and chances are they make decisions out of efficiency (meaning they’re not going to read thousands of applications for an assembly line job) and CYA.

Usually the way to get rich without a degree is somehow to have a strong portfolio of innovations in a field to show. For example, say you’re an inventor who somehow got on the news for something to help the environment without ever going to college, jobs will open up freely. For that, some study hack sites like Scott H. Young, Thomas Frank and Cal Newport can help with the self study to make your own portfolio to show results. Not going to college and getting rich often involves a lot of independence in learning, without teacher’s guidance or due dates to help you discipline yourself. Though James Clear’s blog filled with research on discipline can help. Though this is mostly just the exception to the rule, honestly. Maybe the next best thing honestly is something from an online course, like on sites like Edx, Coursera or Udacity. It’s expensive but at most seeing degree fees around 500 dollars, it’s much less than real life college. Lots of Ivy League Universities giving off online courses, and while I think they’re overrated, the truth is people take you seriously if you associate with such colleges even in the slightest way possible. In my experience, usually fields with employers who are most open to online schooling are STEM fields and creative fields to some extent. STEM, because of course they’re the types who like to keep up to date with the latest science and technology. The arts, because a lot of them just tend to value the unconventional, considering the creative fields is considered an unconventional path to itself. Not sure about much else, it seems like other types of careers with online schooling would be a gamble.

The Canadian post secondary schooling system follows that same principle as well. Tuition and book costs grow each year and the level of education stagnates. Don't even get me started on the text book extortion, that is, releasing a new version of the same book every year with changed page numbers and marginal additions to content, so that students have to buy them again to keep up with in class

I am a TA, and when you have a ton of gorgeous students throwing themselves at you or dressing in short skirts or coming to your office letting you know that they will do "anything" to pass... After awhile it does start having an affect on your libido... especially if several of these students look like someone you would date in a heartbeat... I think I need to leave TA work soon... Before I finally meet my kryptonite.

1. How do you accredit any merit to online courses?
-- What's stopping someone from clicking play, going to another room, and playing video games all day, and coming back to claim that they completed the course.
2. A lot of online courses IMO are trash:
-- Especially programming/CS one's because it all ends up leading to students following along and copying code verbatim, Monkey see monkey do.
-- And then calling it a day, rather than actually spending 20 minutes after each lesson reflecting on what they have learned, and then testing out how to apply their skills in other use cases or projects, try to add new features and extend the principle taught/introduced in the lesson.
Like they don't try to tweak or break things and learn to think for themselves and look up documentation. Instead, they are given a guide that is holding their hand, but in reality, no one is holding your hand, you have to learn to figure things out for yourself. Critical thinking and problem-solving are a must. However, most students don't understand this so they just follow along and then they end up thinking they are more proficient in [insert programming language] than they actually are. So when they try getting jobs as self-taught programmers they get screwed. I think coding boot camps have made this better since there are in-person and interactive learning assignments but it's still far from perfect.
3. There are a lot of sketchy online boot camps and Udemy courses.
4. A certificate is not the same thing as a degree from an accredited academic institution. Sorry but that's the reality until we can get institutions that can offer online courses with an equal level of accreditation, online courses are great for learning things, but not the end all be all for career development.

@@ashleym6765 well I'm getting certifications while also pursuing my degree in CS, but I've also been looking for internships while actively engaged in research opportunities on campus because that way I learn to apply my skills, gain mentors, and make a larger network of connections to potential employers. But I still feel like I need to contribute to open source projects, and do tons of leetcode problems before I can be industry ready.

@ i don`t know how to tell you this but a lot of companies that aren`t cutting edge like google,microsoft,etc. have the minimum requirement of a bachelors degree so even if you have double the skills and expirience of a degree holder your resume is automatically denied due to not meeting required minimum conditions

Easy: we live in a cooperate oligarchy where our rulers want nothing more than to keep us dumb and subservient. So they lobby our congresses to strip funding from education and reduce regulation. Then the oilgarchs are free to put their stooges and allies in administrative positions where they sit on their asses while getting paid millions of dollars and sweep up scandals to protect their predators.

It's sort of like how they put those rings around a cormorant's neck...

we also have free universities in argentina, and the university of buenos aires is the best in latin america, so uknow if a "third world country" can do it why not the US

College isn't hard to get in America, but getting a quality education and getting out of debt is the hard part. You live in a country where college is free, take a major that doesn't quite pan out, you can go back and still be relatively debt free. In America, if you take the wrong major and don't get a decent job, going back to college means either more debt, or being stuck in under paying jobs.

Public K-12 is same way, lots of 6 figure administrators and then underpaid, overworked teachers. Same with fire and police actually, top 100 or so public employee salaries are police/fire management in Chicago.

We had a professor who came to class 2x a semester and those times he deigned to grace us with his presence, he would talk about his life in a brag-gy manner. "I've travelled to this country. I've seen this. Have you been to this country? Oh no, you should travel more". Yeah, most of us can barely afford tuition and rent to live miles from home but we will travel to china to see their landmarks cos our absentee professor shames us for not seeing enough of the world.

I just don't get how I can justify it to myself to go here for another 3.25 years (half way through second semester) when the classes are so slow and I can find all the information on my own (computer science student) much faster than the material is being taught. This on top of sitting here with my class asking the most brain dead questions all day. Some of my friends have dropped out for self study and are loving it whereas I can either have a 4 year aneurysm or have no support at all.

Another TA here, just finishing my master's over the summer and starting the PhD in the fall (also in the humanities). 100% agree on all points. Sometimes I feel like half my job is getting my students to consider that maybe, just maybe, there is a halfway decent reason why they're being asked to take courses in the humanities as part of the core curriculum even if they're STEM or business majors. The idea that college is just resume-padding or a kind of financial investment with education as a secondary, almost optional component is pretty damaging.
I really liked this episode for the conversation about the money and where it goes, but I think it's also very much worth being conscious of the fact that college can bring immense social value if we can make it accessible to everyone and stop marketing it as a 'golden ticket.' When I was a freshman, my university's common read was Andrew Delbanco's book College, What it Was, Is, and Should Be. It's a text I still refer to any student who shows an iota of interest in thinking about what they're doing with 4-5 years of their lives beyond the paycheck they think they'll have access to at the end of it.

Additionally, and especially because you mentioned the humanities, having jobs with incomes that justify and offset the cost of college will help as well. We need a fundamental shift in all of society, not just college

I agree with you on the growing anti-intellectualism, I went to college for computer science and yeah came out with a degree and make a lot of money but I don't remember learning anything worth a damn in US History or Texas History, actually those courses are so whitewashed that the entire Vietnam war was like half a chapter in my textbook. This was a war that lasted well over 10 years and led to the death of 3 Million Vietnamese people, and we didn't learn shit about it aside from oh it was a mistake and America shouldn't have gotten involved. Our history textbooks in college were a fucking joke and they're even worse in High school. So until colleges can improve the curriculum and stop whitewashing history, I wouldn't recommend the humanities to anyone, at least not based on my limited experience.

I pay 500max€ a term while living at my parents, no less than the physics faculty with their( linear) particle accelerator access... including public transport.

Well, universities weren’t designed to be for profit (maybe some private ones were), so it is no wonder they are shit businesses.

No being financially responsible is on the kids paying them and the teachers not them, they are too big to fail they need help.

@@labadaba5088 And how much is a "certain amount" of 1.5 Billion dollars in yearly endowments(and that's on the lower end of some colleges). Even a small percentage would be substantial. Add that to the tuition fleecing, and government grants and these institutions STILL have a lot of explaining to do about why they're suddenly so strapped for cash. Ultimately, THEY are being financially irresponsible with their own business.

This is probably one of the major factors that universities have in searching/accepting international students. They have them by the balls. I taught two 5-credit classes per semester when I was a TA for a similar stipend mentioned here. Just to give context, one of my peers was a stripper and she was able to buy a house--during grad school! Who is the real 2-cent prostitute...

I am from Nepal (a country close and quite similar to India in terms of education). My highschool had just been over when this pandemic started and my final exams are postponed. So yeah... I do have quite a bit of time on my hands now but I have been preparing real hard for the exams. Well, I used to be adamant about going to the United States after this exam itself, complete Bachelor's and even PHD later on and my future plans were to.. you know...settle down there itself for the rest of my life. But this pandemic really has got me questioning things. What do you suggest man? Should I stay in my own country or go to the US after this pandemic is over?

You won't make as much money as in the United States but education is way cheaper and you can have a decent quality of life, free health care and most countries have better government assistance for immigrants than the United States does. No place is going to be 100 percent perfect, of course.

To be fair, one reason we (I'm a Chem Prof) still have WinXP is that some instruments software doesn't run (or needs a serial port or specialized card that no longer has a port on modern computers...) - and the option is to use a $45k instrument that works great but has an old OS... or buy a new, now $55k instrument to replace it. I have a 1983 laser in my lab, and a WinXP computer... and hope that I never have to replace them because they have 40 more years of life ignoring software.

The football coach and the president at my school make that and no one is complaining. Of course adjuncts, who do most of the teaching, are paid poverty level wages and no health insurance.

Only? Damn. I guess this is partially why I don't go back to college, but, that seems like a lot to me lol. I went to college for a year and could not go back. I am impoverished and partially disabled as of 2013, can't really go back and my highest paying job in my local area gave me about $6.00/hour after wage garnishment and taxes. It was grueling and I haven't worked since. I've become a hermit. I'd kill for $25/hr.
