15 years ago, I learned guitar to the stage 1, and pretty much stayed there ever since. However, just with that 'little' magic, my guitar has become my soul and made my life colorful. Not every journey has an end, but the view on the road is always amazing.

This. Ive had my guitar for 4 years now and I left it sitting eating dust for 1.5 years and decided to pick it up again a few months ago.
So first off that break.... it has helped me so much. I learnt some basic stuff some years ago and for some reason after taking such a long break im able to do all of that so much better now lmao
I dont just play chords, i play shapes with my fingers. That sounds weird I know but Im playing in a whole different way now.
Before I play a chord, I play the sound in my head first. Its so fkn weird dude like I know jack sht about guitar and maybe played a max of 50 hours but Im not learning chords anymore.
For some frkn reason Im hearing sounds. I learn what a chord sounds like. Downside is that I often forget what chord Im playing. I only know what it sounds like
But i only got this after taking such a long break. Adhd and guitars are crazy man.
This is a journey you can only take when the time is right but first you gotta build your boat and take a day off
@@tunod- True that I was learning continuously for months.. even though I was trying many things in guitar and getting an hold of the techniques I didn't feel like I was progressing much.. then came a month of vacation and after coming back I again started to play and I feel like I am playing pretty well lol with same feeling that u had.. not sure why I felt like I didn't play well before vacation and not sure how I am playing pretty decently after the break

Great comment and lovely approach. Like you say, it's a beautiful journey first and foremost. Even with the "basics" one can find inspiration, connection, and create some great stuff. It's sad when self doubt/criticism or ego take away from the relationship between a person and their instrument. There is nothing lacking or missing unless we tell ourselves there is (and that's not to say there isn't room to explore and try new things).
Seeing it laid out in these stages made me feel a lot less overwhelmed to pick up the guitar again! So much to learn, but this was reassuring and a reminder that we don't have to jump in and try and learn everything at once. Thank you!!
take it at your own pace! learning acoustic is amazing because it's raw and fully you, what you play is what you hear
I tried to learn decades ago, long before there was KRplus. Everyone else around me taught themselves, were not advanced, and had zero teaching skills. The average learner gets bogged down or discouraged attempting to learn advanced things because everyone else tells you that’s ‘playing guitar.’

i am 15 years old, live in germany and play the guitar for more than 6 years now. I started with classical, then continued with electric guitar (as a great fan of RHCP). A few months ago i bought an accoustic and I love playing this fingerstyle blues stuff. I am about at stage 12 now and wanted to thank you for your videos! You taught me a lot of things like playing under the bridge „the right way“ and my first blues song: nobody knows you when youre down and out.
Frusciante is an amazing player to learn from! Such a broad catalogue of different feelings, yet always has that Frusciante sound to it. I believe in you to continue playing and improving. Keep playing because you love to and not to impress other people -- I made this mistake as a young guy around your age and it killed my progress in a lot of different ways.
Paul is a fantastic guitar player, but his communication skills are unmatched. This is how he inspires us to be better.

This is incredibly accurate! As a 29 year old who now makes a living playing traditional country songs (mostly in bars, mostly solo shows) this is almost exactly how my guitar progression went over the last 20 years. Love your videos Paul!

@@shahir1395 You don't have to "get" to travis picking. Just start doing it now and in a month you'll be a natural at it.
@@shahir1395not sure if you’re good yet but you start as slow as you need to over a single chord to properly hit all notes. Also watch a video on proper right hand position. Ramp up speed till you’re a pro. It’s really that easy

This video format is genius, because no matter where you are in your acoustic guitar journey it likely catches up to you and goes from describing your past to providing suggestions for the future. So most beginners and intermediates can be included somehow.

Paul is so much better than I’ll ever be, but to be honest, I don’t want to ever learn too much blues or jazz sounds because it doesn’t do much for me musically, I just dig more modern sounding chords. The simpler stuff with more Major diatonic tonality is what grabs me. I kinda just dig punk rock the best I guess. But I did just order a small acoustic because sometimes I don’t want to deal with cables and electronics when just doing fingering exercises. I figure I’ll detect small mistakes better than when practicing on an unplugged electric.
Yes, it's great....you can spot exactly "where" you are and then see the next levels. I loved Paul's 'chord' video too....building up basic chords into magical sounding shapes and figures

@@amirkharrat9189 well maybe you could start with listening to blues. Then learning a few songs get inspired by different artists and find your own style. The best place to start is by listening to BB King. Just an opinion. :) All the best fellow musician

I realised these stuff too somehow by myself, like playing a chord pattern way up the fret board. About 30 yrs been playing..thats a long time and i'm still so clumsy on the guitar, oh my
I felt the same. I can't do all of this stuff, but I can do most of it pretty well. It's reassuring to see that represented as significant progress. Because, while you're doing it, you're always comparing yourself unfavourably to the next level. Young folks are in a great position to skip a lot of frustrating road blocks with the learning resources now available.
@@thecaveofthedead Same here. I never felt good enough really. 50 years or back n forth practicing sometimes and sometimes not, or even playing for that matter. Until just recently at a family dinner this past Christmas, my brother was talking about how good he though I was on guitar. I looked up at him and said "Who me". I was shocked. Still don't take the time to play much yet. Work and life get's in the way, but I still pick it up a few times a week for 15 min. to an hour. Hope to play more when I retire. I'm sure I will.

You can always become good on your own but with teacher it's faster and you can correct mistakes from the beginning. But Its always fun to learn things as a foreigner👍

I've played piano for four years, taking a break at the moment and I've thought about getting into guitar and after watching this video I'm getting one. You make it so interesting and beautiful sounding.

To me the first few steps were dead on too but then I noticed that after a certain point, by paul's description at least I skipped to a few steps ahead, went back & picked up some remaining stuff multiple times :D
For example I'm still not that into getting that good at playing multiple lines at once so I skipped on it a bit but, that's because I want to play certain stuff on different instruments. I'll probably get a bass and a keyboard or a bow instrument too eventually.

@@faizanalvi3932 okay, the thing is I've been also not playing that much guitar over the last 1-2 years but recently I started to discover some new bands that're doing some different stuff than an usual all power chords rock band. The thought of playing the same stuff over and over again kinda put me down a bit but I never thought I'd stop playing altogether and I think I'll play more soon :D
A little tip for you: Check out some voice coaches reacting to rock/metal bands. Apparently some of their communities actually keep following the new stuff and find good ones, request them to review/react to those. For example I didn't know about the band called Unleash the Archers and now I enjoy their songs quite a lot & checking out other bands as well xd

This about made my eyes water up. I recorded an albums-worth of my old songs a couple years ago then after nearly 20 years of playing I just stopped. I had this burst of creative energy after recording and wrote about 30 songs in a couple months and then imploded. I’ve barely played in 2 years.
Watching him basically recount my formative years reminded me of the intense joy and thrills I had each time I broke another plateau. I put my guitar back out within reach a few days ago but still haven’t touched it but I think this little stroll down memory lane might break the ice.

Pick it back up! Don't feel pressure to go overboard and record stuff... Just play what comes to you and enjoy!
Screw around with tunings or even partial capo stuff. You'll be hooked in no time.
I can relate. I have done something similar. Now I am trying to come back with the purpose of improving vs just playing what I know.
@@888kaddy Great idea I was kinda doing that when it bottomed out. Can’t believe this comment is 5 months old. I’m still not back on it. Couple days ago, I brought it back out into the living room so it could stare me down. Not really working.
I worked out a lot of trauma on these guitars. Apparently the stinking thing is trigging my ptsd. Now that I think about it, when I started therapy a couple years ago is about the same time I stopped playing. A lot of my songs are old enough now that I myself somewhat have gotten lost in the metaphors. But facing all this crap brought back what all those songs represented in the day.
Anyone ever experienced anything like that with an instrument? I sure would like to pick him up again. I have a bunch of lyrics now with no music.

I have gone back to basics working on rhythm, learning the right chords vs forcing the ones I know and doodling and then feeling stuck. Also bought a new acoustic guitar as a show of commitment. It feels good to show myself this matters to me!

Want to a take a moment to shout out all the kids that started out with the piano and are already familiar with some basic musical concepts, that struggle with impostor syndrome, yet are still here. We got a long way to go but every step brings us closer to our goals.

Oh... I never thought about my lack of confidence with my playing as impostor syndrome, but on hindsight it totally was. I'm getting better though, so I'm more confident now
Always remember that the stronger your imposter syndrome the higher your potential. If you weren't being called to something you wouldn't care enough to question it. And know that if the call is strong it's no use resisting: contentment will elude you until you surrender and get to work. The soon you accept this the better.

haha omg that´s so me... i ´ve played the piano for like 14 years by now and picked up learning guitar like a year ago. In my opinion piano is a lot easier to learn/play than guitar and I feel soo bad because my guitar skills are still not that good. I mean I can play open chords and bar chords, a little bit of blues stuff and can more or less play some scales but that´s it and it´s already been a year. I feel like I should play much better by now but yeah still... But I hope I will reach my guitar goals any time soon haha
It's rare that someone finds the thing that they were meant to do... It's even MORE rare to find someone that finds THREE things they were meant to do! In this case guitar, content creation, and teaching! Love your videos and will definitely be signing up for acoustic adventure!

Steve...also work on vocals....masterful guitar playing is awesome, but you have sing to hold a crowd. I dont play anywhere near as good as I should based on how long I have played, but I practice singing everytime I drive. I will never claim to be a great vocalist, but I have been hired, and hired back again.....it is never my guitar playing that seals the deal. It is competent vocals along with the guitar.
It also helps that I have 120+ songs commited to memory. All styles, pop, rock, folk, country. Cheers
@@joeshmoe7967 yeah, i dont think practice is a problem, i got my first guitar this xmas and have been playing and singing for between 40mins and an hour and a half every day without fail since then. When the singing is bad (which you can witness for yourself over on my channel - Ive been recording my progress) it is usually because i am choosing songs which are out of my limited range (or at the moment hayfever!) because they are great to play. I have considered singing lessons but at the end of the day its just for fun for me, i am not planning to do anything professionally or anything and my youtube vids, which probably come across as a vanity project are more for confidence really should i ever feel crazy enough to do an open mic :D

I think i must be doing something wrong?
I played lots of bass guitar in highschool, but that was like uhhh Jazz style. The teacher didn't know I was essentially strumming out my own improv parts. My father gave me both my old bass and an acoustic and i want to play certain things so I just keep fingering out individual notes. I don't really know any chords. I don't even know what the names of the strings are. I can kinda tune out some differences that make good melodies but they're always single-note.

I found out about Cadd9 on my first day of playing because the first song I looked up a tab for was Nutshell by Aic.

I have recently got started in an acoustic duo and I have learnt that being the only guitarist (and without a band) that there is absolutely nowhere to hide any mistakes.
So as a consequence my playing has become cleaner and more accurate over the past few months (I also play in a rock band too).
I got up to about number 10 on your list as far as being able to play those techniques, and even some of the later components too but with a little less confidence. Lol
I have also discovered being the only guitarist in our duo, I need to learn to fill the songs out a bit in certain songs so I am learning to play chords and lead lines together, which is more about what you were talking about in your later points.
I have a new appreciation for the skill level required to play acoustic guitar cleanly and confidently and it is also improving my electric guitar playing along the way.
This is a great video for explaining the different levels of acoustic playing and I hope I can one day share some video of my playing with everyone.

This is a roadmap. Your ability to break things into levels is spot on.I went on a similar acoustic path, although I was lead guitar in the band playing acoustic on the unplugged nights. ended up studying classical, getting into Michael Hedges and fingerstyle steel string, jazz and folk. There are many paths on the acoustic,

I've been following your KRplus channel for years. I really like the sounds and your likeable way of explaining your technique and the feeling for it. Thanks for the many inspirations and tricks. After a long KRplus break, I was traveling on the Canary Islands for almost a year, I just discovered your new acoustic adventure workshop. As a photographer, I have a rather critical eye but the quality of your videos really appealed to me years ago. This one literally overwhelmed me on cold feet umpteen times with running tears. Okay, I'm also just built close to the water since this trip I've been in a deep, massive crisis because I almost lost my life and all my equipment there, including a brand new LAG Hivibe. In the meantime, my broken hand has healed well and I'm playing with new power again. My fate hasn't changed yet, everything from family to apartment from car to five bugs in the pocket, everything continues to dissolve bitterly, I'm sinking and losing more and more. Just me and my guitar remain a team and the desire to play with her to spread sound, light and love in this freezing, shadowy time. For human ears and souls... not to become a total misanthrope.
It's wonderful that there are people like you who can touch us as much as you can.

Paul, you are inspirational, multi-faceted as to the different styles of music, and were born to teach (and, of course, play) the guitar. I remember your video of the day you quit your job, the spring in your step, the excitement in your voice, and the sense of freedom that you conveyed. It took real courage for you to do that, but you boldly went for it. It sets an example for all of us to follow our dream. I am not surprised you have so many subscribers (including me, as of today).
What a beautiful, passionate and inspirational video. I'm a campfire guitarist "pro", so at stage 2 and this video just showed me home much I cannot play and do. Two weeks ago I started learning my first fingerstyle song, having a hard time but don't want give up and afterwards I really want to dedicate myself to become better in general, to be able to play around and jam and experiment in general, not just with one song. Dear brother, I've been adventuring on the acoustic guitar for decades, just slowly developing my own strange finger style approach, and low and behold, all this super cool stuff recently fell into place for me in a very new and fun way. Always knowing where I am and what I'm actually doing. Your videos are an excellent validation for all that I've intuitively learned, finally falling together for me.
