One of my great memories was meeting Vladimir Horowitz by chance when I was a college student, about age 18, in New York around 1976. I was taking a walk through Central Park when I passed by Mr. Horowitz sitting on a park bench with a friend. I did a double-take and turned to face him, surprised and delighted to see one of my favorite pianists of all time. He looked at me and gave me a big smile. I bowed my head in deep respect and he smiled again and nodded. I was too shy at the time to approach him or to talk with him, and didn't want to intrude on him. But nobody else in the park but me seem to have any idea who this distinguished man was with his friend sitting on the bench; so Mr. Horowitz seemed to appreciate my expression of delight and deep admiration as our eyes locked for the moment.

Horowitz was still performing in 1987, at the age of 84. You can find an enjoyable recording of Mozart's no .23 piano concerto by him. Rubinstein retired being 89. Some people are blessed with sharp mind and hand dexterity till the very end of their lives.

I remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I heard this concerto. I was in the car and listening to it on the radio. I ended up driving for the full 44:30 so that I would not miss a single note. I drove to a place where I could park and look out over Los Angeles and just listen. Oh did I mention I cried the whole time because it was the second most beautiful piece I had heard. The first being Horowitz playing the Schubert G Flat Impromptus, Opus 90. I made a vow to myself the night I heard the Shubert that I would not rest until I could play it. I have been resting for many years now. I preformed in in a concert in 1994. The Rachmaninoff is still a dream that may require Heaven or becoming a vampire.

Just watch how Mehta accompanies this virtuoso, who himself is possessed by the music. Watch Horowitz right hand at 39:58 off the piano keys and conducting the precise tempo he wants on the next two beats - and how Mehta anyway gives it him. Precisely! How, at 39:50 and onwards with those introductory chords to the finale Horowitz is conducting Mehta with nods of his head. At 41:42 Horowitz has both hands in the air in utter joy and triumph because he knows! And then see how Mehta watches Horowitz' hands in the last bars (43:00 in the video but he was watching way before) in order to be sure of his beat. And how Mehta brings the whole thing to the most perfect synchronous climax - and how Howoritz is off his chair with excitement and the look on Mehta's face - because this was the performance of the century. And they did it! And they knew it!! And this joy and excitement can only come from live music making. I cannot wait for this pandemic to be over - for this is what we have been missing. And tears are rolling down my cheeks watching and listening - so thank you so much for posting it.

Being in that age group of 75 i can only say these people don't know what they are talking about and should get over themselves. 75 is an age when when all things being considered a concert pianist like Mr. Horowitz would naturally be at the top of their game. Good health to all these would be music critics and their small world.

What makes this my favorite performance of Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto is how Horowitz has such a close relationship with Mehta and the rest of the orchestra. They look at each other and really work together. They're truly jamming. Other pianists don't even bother connecting with the conductor and much less the rest of the orchestra. Human connection is what music is all about.

I would of loved to heard the conversation between these two Giants especially if the subject turned to politics and the Russian Revolution.. I wonder did Horowitz hate the Czars.. if I had to guess I would say both mens families were hurt by the Bolsheviks.. I heard Horowitz mention his father was an electrical engineer but lost his position and status as a result of the coup... It's kind of a paradox because it is also known that Horowitz was of Jewish background and hailed from the pale of settlement which I believe was formally Polish territory that Russia annexed sucking in thousands of Jews in the process.. and then most of the Cazrs did not like the Jews with a couple notable exceptions .. Catherine the great comes to mind.. and with Rachmaninoff..all of his creative power came from the pain of his home being swept away in revolution .. his story is more obvious than Horowitz.. the paradoxical notionI mentioned about Horowitz is that he was Jewish but it seems his family suffered from the hardships the Bolsheviks forced on their people.. and it is well know that many of the revolutionists and Bolsheviks were Jewish and believed violent overthrow was the only way to topple the Czarist regime.. they certainly held no punches.I often wonder what exactly did Russia have that so many strong will ambitious, creative people came from her during the late 1800 early 1900s.. not only were there great musicians and artists.. but poets writer doctors philophers... And let's not forget that Hollywood itself was created by these strange men from the pale of settlement.. Louis B Mayer.. Samuel Goldwyn.. I believe the Warner Brothers were from this part of Europe and many many studio bosses and creators can from within a 350 Mile radius in this small part of Russia..

Both performances are of the same piece but are very very different. They both show difference sides to this piece so to compare them would not really make sense. However, Volodos’ version of Rach 3 has a lot of similarities between Horowitz’s performance. Perhaps he took some inspiration from this legend.

Wow ! Amazing to think of Horowitz playing Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto at the age of 75, when most other pianists just wouldn't be capable of taking it on any more. And it's a really great performance too. What a treat this must have been for the audience. Orchestra sounds lovely too.
