  • Purl, directed by Kristen Lester and produced by Gillian Libbert-Duncan, features an earnest ball of yarn named Purl who gets a job in a fast-paced, high energy, bro-tastic start-up. Yarny hijinks ensue as she tries to fit in, but how far is she willing to go to get the acceptance she yearns for, and in the end, is it worth it?

    I love this. It's realistic. You can't force people to accept you but you can make an effort to fit in first and slowly introduce them to the real you. It's not that the guys are evil, it's just that she is unfamiliar and people tend to stay away from unfamiliar things, so she made herself into something they are comfortable with and slowly convince them to try something new. She first earned their respect and from then on it's easier

    • @angela.luntian
      @angela.luntian 3 년 전 +76

      When theres an unequal ratio there will alway be that "try to fit in" scenario im afraid. It happens in classrooms, and more often than not it's not because of your gender but because of the general mannerisms you give out (assertive or b.t.s.? Leader or leaded on? Talkative or quiet? When these characteristics come in mind you categorize the two as "default" characteristics of "being masculine" and "being feminine", I'm afraid.)

    • @EternitysSlave
      @EternitysSlave 3 년 전 +80

      @@angela.luntian I agree. I have more feminine associated personality traits while most people in my work environment have had more masculine coded interests and personalities. It's important to try and get along with others, especially in a classroom or a workplace, and adopting some personality traits or interests of another group for this reason can be good (as long as these personality traits and interests are healthy and in line with your own moral standards).
      The real problem comes when you are encouraged to completely change your personality in order to "fit in" or secure your job. Thankfully, this did not happen to me.
      Still, as it shows in the video, this process of comforming to the majority ends up erasing the potential of experiencing the positive effects of masculinity and femininity co-operating together in the fusion of different ideas and perspectives.
      Instead of only expecting new hires to conform to the workplace culture, their coworkers should also be encouraged to learn and appreciate differences.
      This back and forth, sadly, does not always happen.

    • @iliadovas6592
      @iliadovas6592 5 년 전 +308

      KE Clarke they used the metaphor of yarn i think to show how women are perceived as these soft, submissive and domestic beings that cook, stay at home, knit, etc.
      she knit herself a knew persona because she felt that she had to change herself to be more like the men to be accepted by the men-which also very prevalent in false feminism. at the end we see that girl power really comes from supporting each other and accepting our femininity and how that does not make us any less equal to men.
      so while we can be perceived as submissive and domestic and soft, these characteristics aren’t necessarily negative. they shouldn’t exactly be the stereotype that determine how all women act, but for those who do- we should embrace it and embrace our femininity rather than try to become masculine to earn equality or success.

    It's an interesting take on things. Sometimes discrimination isn't so much about deliberately being mean, as it is about not really understanding how to interact with people. The BROs weren't being mean or evil, they just didn't understand what this thing was or how to relate to it. By playing their game, Purl managed to step into their universe, and then, by bringing Lacey into their universe, she also managed to get the BROs to relate to her.
    Once the ice was broken and everyone was willing to step out of their comfort zone a bit, they got along fine, and the company probably did better as a result of fresh ideas.
