I‘m really impressed that they can have the cg-models move with the actors in real time.
Sailor Kerberos It’s not a new concept, but it’s unbelievable how high quality the models are considering they’re animating in real time motion capture.
you might want to go watch the making of hellblade: senuas sacrifice, they take this technique to a whole new level

Wow, I think this was the first time I saw motion capture on an animated film without noticing it. Pixar is really pushing the limits of this technology. Great job! :D

At first I read that as smash and dab.
What I think was best part of short film is original design for the extraterrestrial and buildings. It has a steam punk feel mix with some really grate designs for aliens.

Really liked the design of the train, and the story was a good one!
Agree! - Loved the way the locomotive in particular resembled a lot of the 1930's streamlined steam loco designs. Even the "wheel arrangement" was realistic - a 4-6-6-4 (Union Pacific "Challenger") design.
This is easily my favorite Pixar short and honestly I really want to see more from this world, though we’ll probably never return to it..

And it's just one detail, but I love the voice of the hammer-Robot. It made me laugh, but it's touching on the same time!
I would love so much to take part in the production of such a project. And if I just would watch the production process - but in my biggest and not shortest dream I draw something and it is integrated in the project!

I really wish pixar would get atmospheric with its films again. Like when the world feels vast and massive, and nothing like our world. Finding Nemo and Wall-E were really good at giving that feeling of just being enveloped a massive new world

0:21 could there be some Pictures for some upcoming Pixar movies 0:49 is the Story an easter egg. In every pixar movie & Shorts are ester eggs so why not in this one or Smash and grab?

But how did they made those robot sounds? It's sounds such beautiful....Anyone have any ideas?
Sounds similar to the way the voices/sounds were made in Wall-e, which was starting with vocal performances or real-world noises and running them through multiple processors, synthesisers and vocoders etc. I think Ben Burtt used a Kyma for Wall-e.

Ling ago, Pixar was all about pure, hand keyed animation. Now they've dabbled in motion capture, and it's eyebrow-raising.
I haven't seen many behind the scenes videos of Pixar, but I think many of their movies are not motion capture, since that seems impossible.
Finding Nemo, Incredibles 2 (Elastigirl at least), Cars 3 and Toy Story 4.
I feel like, just from what we're getting a glimpse into here, that this is less the infamous "let's save money" motion capture that has plagued CG films and more akin to when 2D animators would reference real actors and movements. Smash and Grab clearly also had a great deal of animation that could not have been handled by motion capture and a lot of emphasis was placed on it, such as robot's facial expressions. If motion capture can be used as an assist to make animation better instead of a cheap way to replace the charm and nuance of keyed animation, I'm interested to see what they do with it.
I hope no, I hope no, I hope no body do a smash and grab.

Basic use of motion capture; had everything to do with body language, and nothing to do with facial expressions.

So is using these "short" techniques, specifically the animators-straight-into-mocap, useful for iterating techniques used for full movies? As in, you wouldn't dare try this malarky when a 100 mills on the line?

Okay... the lighting really seems.... wierd and allot of shots are noisy as hell? Like... is it a hybrid realtime solution? Also I see ALLOT of 2D elements comped in? Maybe a small rundown on how this was made? - my money is on realtime stuff here :3
Oby 1 the floating islands towards the end shot definitely seems 2D
at the shot where smash sees the energy spheres from the window the shadows are missing and theres lots of aliassing in the distance.. theres also weird things happening with the armospheric fog during the scene theyre on top of the train. Definetly looks like a realtime renderer to me
