Back when I was a kid my brother and I would play with the chicks by building a maze that leads them to our 'cage' to 'catch' them after few attempts a part of the maze collapse on top of one of the chicks (it didn't crush the chick just made it stuck) out of pity and tad of guilt I set it free and it ran straight to the hen At that moment I could've picked up the chick then and there but I didn't, looking back at it must be terrifying for a chick or a child in general to experience near death and must only want the warm comfort of their mother.
I think it’s called imprinting. When I was a child, I had this chick follow me around thinking I was its mother. We used to be together until it grew. It also liked to fly and sit on my arms. Sadly, it passed away in a not so good way. I cried so much and really hated my father back then. It’s the only animal with beak (I’m so afraid of them) that I let myself to get close to.
Your father got the chicken to be food, as a child you couldn't separate the thought it being a pet and it being food. It's absolutely fine to treat an animal as a pet and then eat it if that's what it's purpose was for, being killed painlessly in the prime of your youth is truly not such a bad way to go. We should treat food animals much, much better, senseless killing of emotional creatures is rough, but people are selfish and don't want to create a bond with something that they will kill and eat, so they treat it like trash instead, so unfortunate when that happens. However, your father did nothing wrong and you're simply being overly emotional because of your misplaced attachment.
That's really unfortunate, what happened. My mother had a similar experience with her pet rooster. But yeah, there is nothing wrong with being attached to a pet, even if that spieces if often seen as a source of food and is bred for it. It wasn't missplaced attachment, just unfortunate in it's circumstances.
Or if its low enough for me to reach, peck it. My brother and I had 7 (3 were his, and 3 mine, and then we shared the youngest baby), and my three were always in between my legs pecking at my inseams (it was cute, but ticklish).
I’ve raised a few chicks in my day. They fall asleep in your hand when snuggled but you can also carefully stick them in your shift and they will snuggle into your belly. You can also lightly cup them in both of your hands and they will snuggle into your fingers. I put my brood of 6 to sleep at night in both of my arms.
