I was in my teens when Led Zeppelin put this out. I bought the vinyl, and this became #1 on my list. I was at a stage in my life where I didn't know what I would do in life. This song taught me I could choose which way I could go. It changed my life forever. I still tear up listening to it. In 3 days I am turning 71. I have been married for 46 years to my sweetheart. I have two wonderful children and two lovely granddaughters. If not for Stairway to Heaven, I don't know. It took hold of me and never let go. Still my number 1.
I'm 67 and this was the music of my youth. How privileged I was to grow up in a time of superbands and real music played on real instruments. So glad people of today can still enjoy these timeless classics.

Itโs still a heart touching moment watching John Bonhamโs son playing with Heart and the amazing approval and the amazement on the faces of Led Zeppelin listening to the performance. If you get a chance, watch it. You will not be disappointed.

Which is saying a LOT because he's made it known several times that he's, generally, not a fan of people's covers of the song. I think the addition of the choir, orchestra, and most importantly John's son playing the drums using his dad's kit and wearing his hat really got him.
I agree, this MUST be the Live version to react to. Incredible. I remember going to a college pub in the early 1970s and Heart was the band. Who would have thought, she would perform Stairway at the Kennedy Center honoring Led Zeppelin.

Today's Music.......Generally that's an oxymoron.
This song, it brings you on a journey, first it beckons you to follow, then it holds your hand, then it runs and pulls you along and finally you are moving at warp speed with it. For today's music people are corrupted by social media content overload so there is a quick gratification impulse, if it doesn't do something within 3 seconds it is mentally swiped.
Another thing is music was not so direct to audience, they actually have to be curated by many levels before they would reach a radio station and even get airtime. Now someone makes music and stream it and it reaches mass audience immediately. Not that it's a bad thing but it caused so much "noise" and what social media algorithm does is it doesn't curate according to what's good, but what's liked by more people. And that's all well and good if what's good is what's liked, but like I mentioned now people want a quick/instant gratification instead of a journey so what the algorithm pushes out would be those instead and yes they do well cos those are liked by many and so the social media gets to serve more ads and earn more money and those pushing out bad but popular music also earns more money so kind of everybody wins but the effect is good music is lost.

I grew up listening to led zeppelin with my dad. He had all the albums on cassette in his truck. I was in 4th grade, music teacher asked us who our favorite band was. He was blown away when I said led zeppelin!!!. I'm the same age as you. I lost my dad last year.
One of my favorite last memories with him. I got him out of the house for one of the last times. I said let's go take a ride in the car.....we have a 73 dodge challenger stroked and bored 340 and a 4 spd. He got in, looked at me and said.....this might be the last time I ride in this car(it was) so if we going for a ride. We're going for a fucking ride! Crank up some led zeppelin and let's go!!!! I did just that. I beat the hell out of that car. Never drove it so hard but he had fun. Led zeppelin cranked and slamming gears!
My junior year in high school (1980) a friend was killed in a car accident. His younger brother played this song at his funeral. Shortly after his brother hit โplayโ, while the mellow opening is still playing softly, some adult goes over and turns the volume WAY UP! We all just smiled at each other knowing what was coming!!
By the end the windows in the little chapel were literally shaking! (no way, at this point, was anyone going to walk over and turn it back down).
It was PERFECT, and if there is a heaven, my friend was there laughing his ass off!!!!!

What an absolutely wonderful anecdote! I, too, lost classmates during HS, and immediately after I graduated. These hit us hard, and bewildered us. I believe they also helped us. They helped us grow in experience and wisdom from a tender age, and prepared us for things to come.
My dad bought me tickets to the concert in '72 in Seattle at the coliseum - He waited outside in the car for the entire 4 and a half hour Led Zeppelin performance. They even played some songs twice! The crowd was wild.

The Live version of Zeppelin @ Madison Square 1973 is absolutely incredible. I was born that same year and will be forever grateful I had aunts & uncles who turned me o to this incredible band when I was 3 years old. I was born in 1966. This song closed out every single school dance in every single school dance above the mason-dixon line. Free Bird closed it out in the south but in the north? Led, baby! Unreal - great memories. And you can keep searching - you won't ever find a bad song by Led.
I was born in 1967 and attended high school in Maine not too far from the Canadian border - pretty far north. Iโd say the closing song for our school dances was close to evenly divided between Freebird and Stairway to Heaven - both being awesome songs! โค

John Bonham's son played the drums, and there wasnโt a dry eye in the place! Even Michelle Obama was jamming on it in the crowd. Just an incredible song then and now! Zeppelin refused to cut it down to 3 min for radio saying you can't take the journey in 3 min. And it is still the most requested song on FM radio. 4 of the best rock musicians at their peak! The live version at Madison Square Garden is incredible.
I pity those whose first exposure to this was that chopped version. When I first heard that ABOMINATION, at 15, I was *angry*. Called the station to complain. Had to apologize to the DJ when I realized that he was as taken aback by the time as I was, forced to play it because it was โstation policyโ.

Jimmy Paige is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He wrote the music, Robert Plant wrote the lyrics when he was 23 years old. One of the greatest R&R songs in history.

Not to take away from Jimmy in any way but John Paul Jones composed and played all the multiple recorders(Renaissance period flutes), as well as the electric piano harmonies following Jimmyโs guitar parts.
Youโre smart to start with studio versions when doing older songs. Thatโs how we all first heard them, how we know them, how we remember them, how we relate to them, connect to them. Studio versions are special, just like seeing the bands live was a special opportunity. This recording is the ultimate example; it is a perfect coming together of four great musicians in time, captured on tape for eternity, never to be changed. It is definitive.
There are a few exceptions to this, Free Bird live and Do You Feel Like We Do are better live than the original studio versions.
It bugs me when a younger reactor watches a song from a band but they start with a live video 20 years after the fact, when the singers have peaked and are fading...I feel they might not like it as much because somethings lacking...
Agree with you. I often love the live versions. Have very fond memories of seeing 70's bands in concert. But I went to the concert already being a fan. We were already in love and when you love something, you love it minor flaws, quirks, creative departures and all. Some live versions do exceed expectations. And some leave the studio version far behind. But I think most of the time it's best to experience a live performance as a fan, which is how it was meant to be.

Yes, it's great. President Obama awards them the Kennedy Center Honors. At those shows, the artists don't know who's going to perform. And, they're all great. Jack Black is hysterical at the beginning when he's telling anyone who might not know who Zeppelin is, all about them. Then, the music starts, the people there are celebrities, other musicians, and politicians jamming to Zeppelin. Heart was asked very last minute to perform this song. I think it was just a few days. But, John Bonham was the drummer and when he passed away, they didn't feel right about trying to replace him. So, they dissolved the band. A surprise drummer plays for Heart and it's Jason Bonham, John's son, that's really when Robert Plant started tearing up. They were all visibly moved, but it really got to Robert. There's another surprise in that performance that I'm not going to tell you about but just be prepared to have your goose bumps to have goose bumps. It's amazing.

First time I heard this I was in my room alone. Sat on the floor and just listened. By the end I had tears running down my face. This is my generation's classical music. It will never die.
My mom saw LZ in Vancouver before they were big. They opened for Vanilla Fudge. I think it was in 1968 or 69. She always says this when this song comes on. Every Sunday I take my mom out for brunch. On the way back we drive through the farm lands near her house. Its nice and slow. We talk and just chill. I always put on Stairway to Heaven for her. Its her favourite song. She is in the twilight of her life now. I think of only her now when I hear this song. I know I wont be able to listen to it after she isnt here anymore. But for now I can and do with her. As for your mom seeing Led Zeppelin in the beginning that would have been so great. The drummer of Vanilla Fudge became friends with John Bonham and they bonded over drums. Bonham was a fan of his before they played with Fudge.
I've seen videos on youtube of Led Zeppelin when they started out. Their first performance in 68. they are on here and I wonder if a short video was done in Vancouver.

I'm coming up on 64yo. I saw Zep's last show ever in L.A. 6/27/77. I played "Stairway" for my mom one time back in the day, I opened the album so she could read the lyric's and as she listened and read she started to cry. I think she understood at that moment why I loved the music so much. I hope to see her again at the top of the stairway one day.๐๐

I was a College student in the 70's when someone brought this record into our dorm room. We lost our collective minds and played it over and over until we lost consciousness. So happy to see a new generation discover and thrill to this song!

What I love about these videos is seeing people react to songs I took for granted as a kid. I don't remember the first time I heard this song cause it was always in my periphery as a child, so listening to it as an adult, and hearing someone else break it down to the bits that are especially poignant to them is special to me. For the 70's and 80's Casey Cason did the best 100 songs of all time on every new year's eve. Freebird was always 2nd and Stairway was always 1st. Since Skynyrd was my favorite band I was hopin' they'd get it one year lol. Amazing the staying power of good music from any genre!!

A few years back Led Zeppelin won at the Kennedy Center Awards. They had Heart sing this song with a choir backup and the original drummer's son showed up as a surprise. Robert Plant cried. Please watch it. It is amazing.

When I was 24 years old I owned a jingle company in Birmingham, AL. I was asked by the studio I worked at if I wanted to drive one of three limos to pickup Led Zeplin and the take them to their private jet after the concert. I got to stand at the edge of the stage about 10 feet from where this amazing song was performed live. After the concert was over I drove three of the group to the runway where they boarded their private jet. Once in a lifetime experience.

We're the same age, and we had essentially the same reactions to hearing Led Zeppelin for the first time. But the first song of theirs that I heard was "Immigrant Song." When I first heard that song, I had no idea who the artists were, and didn't find that out until much later.

I grew up with hair bands (which I liked) ... but the rock station in town doubled as the classic rock station and my dad still had his reel to reel so I also got The Doors and Creedence (et al), I was VERY lucky to be schooled by my parents, local rock radio, etc., and grew up with a large catalogue of rock music.
