@@benfoster3375 I had a very tough time to remove an oil filter, that was installed in a shop, with no oil, and overtighten.
It took me 4 hours of work, two filter removing tools, and two screwdrivers, since the filter was placed under the car, and i did not have a lift.
Whatever. This opperation would take me few minutes normally.

@@MrGigi-dz9cv this is exactly the reason i just opt to buy a k&n oil filter now, because i get the one with a nut on the bottom and i dont have this issue anymore. It was always the thing that slowed me down trying to get this god damn filter off from underneath biggest pain ever. Thank you k&n for making it a 5 second ordeal now.
I also oil it but hand tight only but i do give it the beans, i never know when exactly is enough. I always do try by hand to remove it n it never works, i always end up using that bolt to remove it. No tools ive found fit for me to grip it good. Other than this setup. Should be illegal to sell oil filters without a normal socket size nut on the bottom.
This made me just imagine reinventing the oil filter to something you physically put onto ur filter, like a beer koozi, the neu ot the bottom of it as u turn it to the left that nut tightens everything up and grips the filter good, then use a socket set and easily remove any filter. Hmmm

A ratchet is not meant to be used as a tightening tool, but rather to speed up the process of running the thread to the point right before tightening. For that a Torque wrench should be used as any threaded fastener has a torque specification and that sump plug which is located on an aluminum sump in particular depending on the thread size and pitch used should be tightened down to +- 60 Newton Meters /44.25 ft-lbs of torque ( common spec, however Volvo technical service data should be referred to ) and the same goes for the oil filter housing which should be +- 25 Nm / 18.439 ft-lbs ( again see Volvo's recommended spec ). Other then that from what I could see in the short not bad and thumbs up for remembering to reset the service interval MIL.

A couple things wrong you missed. 1. There is only so much you saw in that 60 second video (how do you know he didnt do that?) 2. The (book) your reading is never used for oil changes but for other services. And 3 what he did was above the standard In oil changes, and even the nit picky comment you added was not adding to the standard but just incredibly wasteful knowledge and over thinking

Yeah exactly. One minute video. You can always show so much. And I have yet to meet a career mechanic who uses a torque wrench on a drain plug. If you put enough fasteners on, you know how much to torque them.

@@NNKH2 I don't care what you do for money on a deadline for some other man's car. I care about perfection, the highest possible standard, which only we can do for ourselves on cars we truly care about. Your approach might be enough 99.9% of the time. I go to 100 on my personal vehicle. Ultimate reliability, meditate on it. The o-ring should be lubricated.

Voice of reason, remove oil filter before pulling plug it allows better drain flow and for god sakes let it drain for at least 10 min , get all that crud out the bottom of the oil pan especially if you're doing 6 months In between changes . 👺

  • @mikeumm

Only thing I would add is... And I don't know if Volvo's do it as much... With cartridge filters I like to put a pan under the car, lower it, crack the housing loose, then raise her back up and put the plug in.
I tend to find that cartridge style filter housings like to hold on to oil like a thumb over a straw. So once you crack it loose it drops some dirty oil back into the pan. The amount varies by car, obviously.

How would you fill a filter cartridge that is screwed from top? You can just make it wet, but in the end it makes no difference. When oil pump is not running, filter housing is empty, and any oil you pour there just goes straight into the pan.

Checked tire pressure, added wiper fluid; all things I didnt ask for. Brought it for an oil change.
Also the inconvenience. Once you have a routine for your car a change should take 5 to 10 minutes. Dont need to drive all the way there and then wait possibly hours until its done.
I bet he will start pulling wheels and telling me that the pads are brittle or something ridiculous and untrue

Working as a dealer tech we got paid 0.4hrs to do an oil change and 0.2hrs if it was a coupon/special and not the only work done. It often took longer to get the car in the shop and order the parts. Standing in two lines, looking for car and pulling in shop often takes half hour.
The more oil changes we did the less we earned. I'd usually grab three each morning without bitching, order the parts then grab a big job or two to estimate and let our sales team get authorisation while I do the oil changes instead of standing waiting to proceed with bigger jobs. This is why it takes 2hrs, but if you want an experienced tech to do the work and still pay comparable rates with the fast lube shops, that is the cost. Some shops hire low paid workers to do quick lubes but that is cheating customers who came for expert care not cheap or fast care which is widely available elsewhere.

I don't doubt you, I'm just explaining why service depts aren't eager to do oil changes. Not saying it's right or wrong, just that I'd have to do 40 to earn a below average days pay, and that's not possible.
The sad reality is many dealers don't hire properly trained technicians when they offer fast lube service. Bring it in for warranty repair and ask for oil change and a real tech will likely do it.
