Its weird how with Radiohead you start off with your favorite songs and songs you don't really like. Then you start liking the songs you didn't like. Eventually you just like every song on the album.
Exactly. Jazz is like that too for me
Well said!
Tom Waits does it to me
Exactly.
I agree. Some of their songs are so strange and first and the tempo changes they use to jarring effects can be something that takes a few listens and time to appreciate. When you do, or for me it is when I have finally "hear" how frigging perfect the song is composed and what I thought didn't work does. Daydreaming was the latest example of this. Didn't like it all that much to start but now just get swept up into it when I hear it.
We demand a Pool Shaped Basement from the Moon
UP THIS COMMENT PEOPLE SO RADIOHEAD CAN SEE HOW MUCH WE NEED THIS AND WANT TO SLEEP WITH THEM IN THE SWEET MOONLIGHT DERP
The show got cancelled, but with enough attention maybe they'd do a virtual concert
YES PLEASE
From the Moon 🌝 That would be some concert !🤩❤🐱🌌🏴

Ed O’Brien’s backup vocals on Weird Fishes are unbelievable
Not to mention the sheer amount of sounds he's getting out of his guitar on tracks like "Nude."
to do that live, that sort of distant vocal but sounds just like the record, amazing, great voice
That track is my mental heaven.
GOD man. yep. first thought every time i hear it.
Just me revisiting the comments. As in love as I am with the rest of the song, I get so much more giddy for those backup vocals.
whos here in 2024 still enjoying this master piece
I’m back. Again.

The biggest sin about this live performance is that they didn't get to play jigsaw falling into place. Other than that, this will definitely go as one of their best performances ever. The instrumentation alone is fucking insane.
TKOL from the basement is pretty fuckin' good.
Don't get me wrong ...Rainbows is stellar.
I can't choose tbh...
@@ronlennon.amorocity TKOL from the basement is so good it outshines the studio album. I personally prefer In Rainbows, but TKOL is definitely underrated.

This performance give anyone else a natural high? I've been coming back to it again and again for over a decade, and it still transcendes.
high like I am right now, I can only say this works like a boost to the effect.
Its very encapsulating for sure. I think its got its time and place to flourish. I sound like a hippie...
Which is the highlight for you? Weird fishes transports me
New Year's 2024 and I'm back
In rainbows is the perfect blend of that edge the band has and beauty
Radiohead literally transcends their own music; it’s almost spiritual.
It is.
It is spiritual. Any form of art that moves your spirit and pieces your soul is certainly spiritual
Almost?
How many people think In Rainbows is the best Radiohead album?
Yes.
Me, In Rainbows and OK Computer :)))
It really is. OK Computer is unquestionably a work of art, but I think In Rainbows is too, and is more timeless.
yep, it’s either in rainbows or kid A for me, depending on my mood
Ok computer, the bends, in rainbows...
Phil is a great drummer and I barely see people pointing that out. The man is a living metronome! I appreciate his solo work too.
He has really grown since their start.
He is a beast. One of the best drummers to have ever laid foot on this planet.
Sometimes, a drummer is so good he could almost go unnoticed in the subtlety, in his precision. There's no such thing as a great band, with an average drummer. The drummer has to be great in his/her own way. Phil is great- a big part of the aura of the music....driving it along.
many people don't notice the world class rythm section of Radiohead, with the drummer being probably top5 all time in my book. Not to mention the rythm section of Radiohead is fucking complicated, which is why they needed 2 drummers live
Being on beat is not really the most important thing 4 me because a beatbox can do that. Myself I prefer crazier stuff like Keith Moon or jazzier beats like Jimmy Chamberlain's. Although "optimistic" here is proof that Phil can be both versatile and creative as well
Embarrassing to admit I have only recently discovered this group, and now I'm obsessed.
if u haven’t already, check out the king of limbs basement performance! equally as incredible
@@eternal_icicle Yes, it is also amazing! The more I listen the more I see how unique and gifted they all are!
Relax and enjoy :)😌
KID A & B Sides, give these albums an honest chance if your are just discovering this
Welcome. Beautiful discoveries await.
Phil and Colin are so so so under rated. Look at 'em go keepin the rhythm. Every member is essential to this group. Cant imagine radiohead without either 1 of them. Best modern band on the planet.
💜 100%, each part in crucial
What makes you think they're underrated? they are very much appreciated and correctly 'rated'

Haha, nice.
Nice plug well done great looking carpet I dive a lot of carpets so yea awesome !!
still upset that Jigsaw Falling into Place was not on the track list
Wait, what?! Thought this was the whole In Rainbows album?! Though I see Optimistic is being played though so I guess that somewhat makes up for it!!
might be my favorite track on the album. hard to pick, HOC, 15step, bodysnatchas all are sooo good. imo videotape is overrated, should have done jigsaw instead.
Nik Petrovic same! extremely hard for me to choose a favourite but It’s a tie between Weird Fishes, Reckoner & Jigsaw for me
Graham Irwin I know..was pretty disappointed probably my favourite track on the album along with Weird Fishes. Oh yeah Optimistic is glorious..the climax is pure ear candy
there's a Scotch Mist's version of Jigsaw though, which is great
Aren’t we blessed to exist at the same time as Radiohead
Very!
Yes. Yes, it's a wonderful time to be alive. Needing music like this to keep you sane. I like the post-9/11 legislation, mass immigration and approaching world war the best.
Absolutely
we are indeed
how does this man sing so well
It's absolutely insane how they sound this good live.
concordo
It's a much more controlled environment here than a typical live show. They are able to focus their energy into accuracy and did multiple takes of each song to get it right. That's part of what makes this band great; their meticulous attention to detail.
@@genequist3859 Still live. Most cannot do this
IKR
Not live
Thom Yorke, man.
Sings while playing ALL the instruments, flailing about like a Polynesian fire dancer on mushrooms... and still sounds like an impeccable, layered studio recording.
I feel like all of that flailing has to be part of it... The way he moves around the microphone effects the sound that gets picked up. He's adding affect.
HAHA It is rather amazing! Moves around like a lunatic but somehow always nails every performance!
John I have seen them live many times and the flailing, yep it's there and the multi instrumentalism, and perfection live as far as sound, Yep it's there, every time, a well oiled machine juggernauting its way across the music multiverse. These guys are masters at their craft.
@@keravesque nah he just groovin
@@keravesque He just loves dancing! At earlier shows it only popped up rarely. As his confidence and just love of the music (esp singing comfortably at a high range. Remember Pablo Honey?) he just enjoys the shows and dances and it’s amazing! This sounds exactly the same on record or live, and no dancing.

Amazing feat in timing. How they're able to duplicate all their complicated beats (and off beats) and stay in sync without a glitch through all their live shows is remarkable. They really have their shit together musically.
no better example - Glastonbury 1997 - rain blew their monitors, Thom very nearly walked off stage but didn't, what happened next is probably The Best Performance from any band on that stage. Even Michael Eavis said it.
These dudes went to high school together. That’s insane. Whatever interpersonal struggles must’ve occurred, they’ve never been petty publicly with each other, and have always been able to come together and create exciting music. A true music family. Long may they live.
Yeah, it's so good they did, but also so special and unusual. Maybe Thom had some magic that pulled them all towards being perfect with their music? Their same place/same time is one of our era's miracles.
i wish i could have met bandmates like that in highschool haha
To have so many skilled musicians come together from one school, it almost beggars belief!
Thom and Jonny are just an amazing duo. Not to take away from the rest of them. Nigel also adds something special.
@@klaaswijnsma122 maybe it’s his band and he’s just trying to get his name out there?
OK Computer is realising how soulless and empty the world can be. In Rainbows is finding your place and light in that darkness and all the beauty that comes with it.
God this comment hit hard. I used to identify with the alienation on OK computer a bit too much. Now I’ve found a lot more good than bad in humanity and I agree In Rainbows is an embodiment of that.
True. They were freer than ever at that time, after finishing their deal with Hail to the Thief.
Kid A is the world destroyed by the corruption and bloodthirsty people ?
@@digitalghost41023 Kid A to me is like the robotic acceptance of a cold reality. In Rainbows has that same acceptance but much more human, real and raw emotion.
@@Jackson-pn4pn I feel the same way man.
I saw Johnny at the National Gallery in London (while on vacation, live in USA) two weeks ago with his wife and son. Just went up and asked him if he was Johnny, he said yes, I shook his hand and left him alone. Although I am 56 years old, it was a thrill to meet someone of his genius.
People who can't stand Radiohead, or simply "Don't Get It", really should listen to this entire set with an open mind. Just about every human emotion... They're all here, in this set. This is what music is meant for. This is why music is magic, sorcery... It can do what nothing else can. I think this is Radiohead's most incredible piece of work. It's so cohesive.
Thanks boys. Please never stop creating.
Preach, brother! It’s audible alchemy.
Couldn't have said it better, Thank you!
This is Radiohead at the height of their creative genius

Why almost?
A masterpiece!
it is a perfect song
I love that song its at the end of a movie I think
This is an example of a perfect band. 5 incredibly talented musicians preforming fantastic music.
I've been coming back to this for over ten years now and it never gets less amazing
i've been watching this almost every day now for the past month or so while studying
This is one of best live performances of an album ever.
Fact. It's so incredible
Have you heard the FLAC soundboard version of Bonnaroo? its my fav proper live performance ever.
Definitely… slane castle rhcp goes up there too
This is actually more than just a live performance of an album-there are songs from multiple albums included here. Though I agree with the main point that this is one of greatest live recordings ever.
This isn't actually Radiohead.
I think Thom singing Nude is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard
I have to agree, brings tears to my eyes, beautiful x
That song is subtle perfection. Although I do love the old heavier version as well.
No one else gonna point out the innuendo?
Agreed
regarding beautiful, your pic kind of compete...yeap indeed nude is an incredible song
Jonny Greenwood is such a genius in creating soundstages. OMG I'm speechless.
shut your eyes and it feels like you're listening to the recording, stunning. what a band.
That red carpeting just really ties the whole album experience together man
Dude.
Forget it Donny, you're out of your element.
This is what happens when you put Radiohead in the basement . (Just when I thought Radiohead couldn't be better, the Big Lebowski references arrived
All colours in the basement are in the right place. Just look Jonny's T-shirt!
All the Dude ever wanted was his rug back, man. It really tied the room together.
I just need to make sure Ed O'Brien gets credit for his perfectly executed harmonies and backing vocals. An underrated aspect of the balanced sound this band achieves time and time again.
Not only that but he is a really good backup singer
Radiohead would have been a great band if it was just Thom Jonny and a couple stiffs, but you don't get *this* without all 5 of them, and most especially Ed - his underrated versatility gives Jonny the freedom to play a fucking transistor radio on songs when he feels like it

40:45 when he gives a Colin a "oh, hey buddy" look.
Watching this on my come down of a very emotional trip and this brought me to tears. No matter what we go through, I think it’s important to understand you always have yourself and that’s what Radiohead signifies to me through their music. Thank you (probably didn’t make any sense lol)

Tears are the antidote to hate. Love to you, stranger.
Best part amongst only great parts: Colin's return at 43:17 in Reckoner after having shaken his hands. This warm and purposeful bass line. Wow! 🤩
Thom Yorke dances like he is hearing every note of every instrument and dancing accordingly.

6th favorite from the album. overrated but still an incredible song. also id prob say this is my fav radiohead album now, it swaps between this and OKC@@usinakenes
Weird fishes is not their most famous song but it is my favorite. It has helped me out of so many hard times. I cant even explain why.
weird fishes is the quintessential song of radiohead. there’s no doubt. for me it’s a one way travel to heaven every time I listen to it
its one of the most beautiful songs ive ever heard, definitely one of my favourites from them
Well the song itself is about being putt in a very bad place, but still being able to free yourself from that position. "Yeah, everybody leaves,
If they get the chance, And this
Is my chance", "Yeah, I hit the bottom, and escape, escape". Its a very motivational song when you think about it.
@@selfperformedsparagmos Interesting interpretation! I see interpret is as being unable to escape your situation (but still trying to). The song starts at its lowest, 'At the bottom of the Ocean'. During the first half, the song rises and rises as the narrator gets more and more hope that they might escape, until the climax ("I get eaten by the worms"), when the arpeggio's stop and they plummet back towards the bottom. The ending is determination, but perhaps also false confidence. The narrator is back at the bottom, but still wants to leave. To me, it's a song about loneliness and abandonment. Trying to escape a downward spiral, failing and trying again, however futile/foolish it might be.
that’s the amazing thing about Radiohead: you could name 50
songs that qualify as their best ever
Let's hear it for Colin Greenwood's beautiful, eye-of-the-hurricane, unobtrusive, spinal bass-playing. I love each member's consideration for the others. No-one gets in the way, each sticks to the arrangement, no-one has a swaggery, silly rock star ego. If only for this reason, Radiohead deserves its place as the best band on the planet.
He had to shake it out at 43:15. Yep, awesome!
One of my top 5 favorite bands and albums. I still can't believe I haven't seen them live in over 25 years of being a fan.

one of the best performances of all time. insane
Born in 65, grew up in the 70’s. Partied HARD in the 80’s. Matured in the 90’s. Learned a trade and now an aerospace engineer for 28 years. I’ve seen every band from Abba to ZZ Top. If I had to, I can go the rest of my life with Radiohead being the only band I can listen to and would have zero complaints. They are the best of the best and imo the greatest band in the history of the planet. Wish we could go back to 1994 and do it all over again.
Rock on!!
Twas a junior in high school in 94...Radiohead was my soundtrack in college...Kid A on repeat for hours while I worked on graphic design projects. Then when they dropped In Rainbows as a PayWhatYouWant! Amazing! I'd definitely do it all again for sure!

@Inma González Castelló great comment.
Jonny's move at 4:00 is so underappreciated. He goes from playing rhodes one second to standing by where he was before, recording those super high guitar notes to be looped back later, but without being able to hear himself, then he starts playing normally and starts the loop at the same time, all in 23 seconds.
Thom and Jonny are totally sync'd

Absolutely
gordon freeman is a radiohead fan?
It's not about the mix. It's about the musicians, engineering and instruments. This is barely even mixed or mastered. Was produced by Nigel Godreich, who has produced all of their music since OK Computer - this was his show. So, it was probably very easy for him considering he knew exactly how their music is recorded.

this performance of videotape is unreal
They will never top this. This is an hour of perfection, based on an album that's also perfect. Just perfect.
Whoever engineered and mixed this incredible performance deserves as much credit as the band, This performance is completely off the charts good. It is something special for sure and it just feels like you are there in the room with them. The camera cuts become so natural that you forget about them. This is absolutely the highest bar. So so gooood!!!
Bands could do pay-per-views like this and prob make a boatload of money without leaving their city. I'd pay for these more than I go to live shows.

I slept on this record for so long, but ever since I first heard it a few months ago I’ve been obsessed with it; that riff on Bodysnatchers just pulls you in from the start
It’s my favorite, when I was in high school I couldn’t believe they released it for free. It helped me thru hard times
one of the greatest performances in music history...
This is still my favourite album. Not just Radiohead album but in general, of all time. I know some people would disagree but it‘s their best, I think. I love Kid A and Ok Computer too, which are widely considered their best, but In Rainbows has something so ... otherworldly. I have listened to this album on some of my best and some of my worst days. In the middle of the night and during random hours of the day, i can listen to this endlessly. I don’t think I could ever really put into words what it is about it that makes it so incredible for me but it just is. To me, listening to this means finding peace. From the energy of 15 steps, to one of my favorites, weird fishes, and then letting the beauty that is videotape wash over me. Perfect. Truly, a perfect album if there ever was one
It's been my thoughts EXACTLY for years !!
My favorite thing about Radiohead is that I always get into a huge argument about which is their best album...with myself...and I keep changing my mind...between like 4 or 5 albums! :)
I agree with you completely, easily considered their best album for me personally, although I love them all the same. I honestly can listen to this album for the rest of my life. Weird Fishes being the epitome. Glad I'm not the only one.
I totally agree! it’s hard to choose only one song from this album as the best...they are all top songs.
Couldn’t agree more!
During the performance of Nude, the way Thom looks into the camera at 17:05 after the "You'll go to hell for what your dirty mind is thinking" crescendo.. It's as if he is looking right at the viewer with the conviction of the lyrics he just spoke. Brilliant as always.
As well as doing that entire line in three breaths. I have enjoyed his falsetto progression as he has aged from this point. You can notice his breath control get much better and at one point, do that last line in two breaths making it _really_ stick. As a vocalist, it is beautiful.
@@OfficialMyxomatosis I think that note is full voice, no? Which makes it stands out in contrast to the falsetto in the rest of the song. Either way, absolutely brilliant
I got chills
Such a pretentious comment
@@bbeaup Astute observation my friend
Admittedly, I don't always know what to do with the lyrics to Radiohead songs, but frankly, I don't care. I love the movement of them. And they connect with something deep within me in ways that although I cannot explain how, they lift me up. Weird Fishes, go figure...
Those 15 step chords are incredible. I mean, absolute genius. It really is. It will be a sad day when these guys aren’t around anymore. I dread that day.
I remember when this came out 14 years ago. It still hits the same. Musical geniuses these guys are.
Hi I recommend a new indie song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
LOL immediately recognized you while I was scrolling through the comments while rocking out to this video. 💜 -Jessica

Thanks
Wait, wheres jigsaw fall into places
I just discovered Radiohead in the last couple of years lucky me everything they've done is fresh and new for me.
Those are most of my favorites.
Lost count of many times I’ve watched ‘In the Basement’.. Absolutely love Radiohead and In Rainbows is fantastic...
This is the type of performance that a documentary will be made about in 50 years time
This was in the middle of Thom's transition from J-Pop heartthrob to homeless Los Angeles man.
mason miller and now he’s drunken sailor
😂
Grayson Kemp 😹
Or Yoga instructor
@@bosyogurtlight he's definitely miles more zen now than he was back then !
Music was the biggest bond between me and my father. Nude was the last song I've heard with him. He was very sick, and died back in 2016 (2 days after we heard it) and somehow, I knew it was time for him to go when we were listening to this song together... It haven't made it hurt any less than it did, but this music now ties me deeply to his memory. A beautiful and sad song, just like our last day together... Always to be remembered.
Thanks for sharing. RIP to your dad.
Wow, thanks for sharing that very personal experience. It’s funny how music can attach to a feeling or memory like glue. You can hear a song 10 years later and it will take you RIGHT back to a specific point in time. Sorry about your father’s passing. Hopefully listening to that Radiohead song brings you solace and peace 🙏🏻
Ok
sorry for your loss. that’s beautiful
my love to you
I love all their beautiful experiential magical musicology.
Once in a lifetime these guys. Band of my generation
1. Covid lockdown extended
2. Goes to KRplus
3. Sees two and a half hour Radiohead live set
4. "I'll watch the first couple of songs"
5. Two and a half hours pass
6. "Well I better get back to work"
7. Clicks repeat
2021 in a nutshell
If you watch it on normal speed its only an hour and 3 minutes...
2021 can't be in a nutshell only two months in, but it's nice to hear your year has started off famously!
could you direct me to the two and a half hour set please lol
Same :-)
Fuck, I relate to that
The sound engineering on this session is outstanding, better then the stdiio versions imo. The panning and separation of each musician is unbelievable. When you first hear the albums you think it's all layering but you watch this and just realise you are watching pure genius at work
absolutely agree, I’m blown away listening to this with earphones after listening to the album so much
come to think of it, their basement is just a massive studio
totally agree, I said to my 15yo (who loves Radiohead) this sounds way richer and more emotional than the studio album for In Rainbows
@@ninjasaurxd +1. it's amazing.
Spot on! It is perfection and raises the bar for all musicians.
"This is my way of saying goodbye, because I can't do it face-to-face
So I'm talking to you before
- no matter what happens now, you shouldn't be afraid
'cause today has been the most perfect day I've ever seen"
How do they get through that song without crying. I choke up every time
This is probably the most iconic "From the Basement" recordings of all time. Great to see that this has 15 million views. A few more than 208 thousand likes would definitely be more in keeping with one of the most outstanding live performances of the last decade or so.
I see that it is now up to 211 thousand likes. Sorry that there is no opportunity for my own multiple daily likes to boost this score further. Great that this is the full 1hr 3mins plus version of this performance (rather than any such shorter versions!). Sit back and enjoy!
