Some people already said it, but I feel like the quality of multiplayer games have definitely gone down or stagnated. Single player games though are still really good and getting better over time. Spiderman, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Ghost of Tsushima, Zelda BoTW, etc. The cutoff was 2015 up till now and all those games came out after 2015. Also there are a lot of indie games like at dead of night, Dandara, etc. No one mentioned VR games and everyone mainly brought up multiplayer games and ignored the single player category in this video. There's a LOT of good single player games that are complete at launch.

Between microtransactions, loot boxes, releasing games half made, cruching employees, taking out base game content to rerelease as DLC, the gaming community becoming bigger and more toxic and entitled, games costing $70 now, yearly releases of the same game, live service games, the soul being taken out of the industry, and straight up work place abuse.
I can safely say gaming has fallen off. Games are still the best entertainment medium imo but the industry has really taken major steps backwards.

The only point I can defend is the $70 price tag, because games have been the same price since the late 80's / early 90's, so that's just over 30 years of inflation they haven't accounted for, and the cost of making games has risen yet the end product remained the same price. Even then if you game on PC there tends to be regular steam sales, humble bundles, and more that let you get pretty steep discounts on them if they aren't given away free by epic.

    • @jokane1724

I agree with your sentiment but I don't agree with how you phrased it. Gaming is more popular then it's ever been, so i'd hardly say gaming as a whole is "falling off", but i'd say the quality of video games is falling off. Although once again it depends, Nintendo is built different, their games tend to avoid the modern problems with games like microtransactions and DLC (not to say they don't have those, but they're more supplemental, you do not need to buy them to experience the full game). A good example is xenoblade 2, it's essentially a gacha game, where you try and collect rare heroes by opening what are essentially loot boxes for a random chance of getting what you want. The big difference is that it's all programmed into the base game, you essentially collect loot boxes while you play the game, and the game has a system where if you get really unlucky with your summons, the game will pity you and increase the odds of finding rare characters. It's definitely a similar format to other gacha games, but it's designed so instead of paying for every individual lootbox, you just buy the game, and then have to find every single loot box by defeating enemies or exploring, which is a fun and creative way to implement gacha game mechanics into an RPG. It does have DLC, however is it essentially an entire new game, they designed a whole new world to explore and completely changed the combat system. The DLC is so different from the base game that Nintendo even sells it separately, as in you can buy the DLC by itself without buying all of xenoblade chronicles 2. My point being i'm a massive nintendo fan boy but for good reason, they're just better at making games then everyone else

I think all of these points support the perspective that video games are NOT falling off. I feel like the definition of “falling off” to you and them in the video is “I dont like it, so it’s falling off.” “It’s not as fun as games when I was a kid, so it’s falling off.” “Companies are money hungry, so it’s falling off.” If the definition of “falling off” is simply your personal opinion, I feel like the debate is pointless lol if you tell me that you don’t like games nowadays as much as you did when you were a kid, I would say, “Ok, that’s cool.” What is there to argue? Lol kids playing games today are going to complain in 15 years about how videos games aren’t as good as they were in 2020. That’s just the circle of life

Is it the company’s fault that it’s been added? Sure, depending on what prompted the change (there could be other economic and logistical factors that demanded them to increase revenue on games that they can only produce once every year or two). Is it their fault that micro-transactions still exist? Nah, if consumers demanded against it, they would’ve reverted back.

Gaming has changed since we were young I grew up off Jak & Dexter, Call of Duties, Halo, super Smash, Need for Speed and even World of Warcraft. These companies made great games back then and what was sold was just the game. Now things have changed and the youth didn’t have the same experience that we had all they know is buying half a game and buying the rest of it later through DLC packages and other in game content. No one cares about making a good story line or a great end game experience that doesn’t make them as much money but what does is the micro transactions. The kids don’t know better cause they never experienced those low res captivating games. Games have fallen off because the way in which these companies acquire there money isn’t through the game why reinvent the game and make it more captivating off rip if when they can break it down over 3 years and you still gonna buy it. Stock pricing going up shareholders are happy they don’t give a damn about your experience they want that cash. It’s all about micro transactions sadly.

The ones that get too creative end up getting mediocre reviews. I’d say yes because a lot of the huge publishers that use to be respected like Ubisoft, Blizzard, EA, etc are constantly shooting themselves in the foot with garbage water business decisions. They’re all worried about how they could make the most money while being as cheap as possible.
Fans overhyped CDPR because of Witcher 3 and put them on an impossible pedestal, and because of that, I believe Cyberpunk suffered heavily.
Konami use to be loved by everyone but then they decided to shit on their best dev and jump out of gaming almost all together. Now we’ll most likely never get another Silent Hill or MGS ever again.
Now, all games are just copying each other and it’s honestly so damn boring. Almost every shooter has a battle royale in it and while some of them are good, that doesn’t mean we need all games to have one.
Like them or not, right now it seems the only ones putting out anything worth any money are Nintendo and Sony but even these two have issues as well.

Games that are under Sony like Spider-Man, GOW, etc are the exception since Sony prides themselves on having those standards. As a game developer myself. Streamers are the #1 cause in my humble opinion, followed by casuals. Take my word here: Streamers play games for WORK first and FUN second... remember that.
I've seen many streamers look at games that they admit are fun but due to playing it giving them less viewers, they resume the games that "work".
So A LOT of developers now make games with streamers in mind, which is why theyre often invited for closed betas, etc
So, even if a game is good.. if streamers dont dive on it, most of you wont hear of it or care to play it - humans are also social beings and most gamers want to play games that "are being played". Also, most people dont play games for gameplay these days, they play for rewards.. basically "STUFF".. I cant tell you how many comments I get like "Game is fun, needs battlepass" and my brain just shuts off because I never thought players would ever request that but truth is, CASUALs are the majority -> Casuals want stuff -> Streamers drive revenue -> Streamers only play whats entertaining on stream.

Do you know what could easily fix the problem? If a bunch of big streamers or content creators decided they were gonna go out and just try out a bunch of non mainstream games and play them solely based on if their having fun and not 'viewership count'. A bunch of new games would get a chance in the spotlight and itd show developers that hey, it's okay to try something new.
But as it stands, most sane developers wont "innovate" because its basically financial suicide.. like it or not. This is why the best games now are clones or franchises - nothing "new".
Highly doubt thats gonna ever happen and its not important enough for anyone to nag their favorite content creatores about either... sooo... its what it is.,

I need to be on this show cause like there is a lot of points they could’ve hit in favor for modern gaming.
I’ll admit that Triple A titles have been lackluster and predatory business practices have flooded the market, however to say that modern gaming has fallen off because of shit Triple A releases is short sighted. Cause Triple A companies aren’t the only one making games!
We live in an era now where small time creators can create masterpieces and don’t need a publishing company to get it out to the people, while you can say that Ubisoft and all these big companies are garbage. You got indie developers making great games; FNAF, Cuphead, Rocket League, Among us (Even if the hype is gone, it was still a good game), Fortnite, PUBG - I’m sure even more titles.
These indie games are pushing the industry forward and keeping this community alive, hell a lot of these games - without nostalgia - are on par or even better than a lot of retro games that we had in the past. Cause they allow the creator the most creative freedom, you can get as a gaming developer.
So I don’t think gaming has fallen off, I think it has evolved passed Triple A developers and you know what? We as fans should start supporting indie games more; stop giving attention to broken products and start praising these underrated games and getting these people jobs at these studios. Then maybe we can start focusing back on giving Triple A it’s reputation back!

Hell naw, I pay for a game once! Plus, those are also the mad problematic companies full of abuse of their workers in general, and s*xual harassment in particular. I think y'all should have defined "falling off" before getting into it because the discussion was all over the place imo. It seemed like one person defined it as sales and everyone else was talking about completion at release and replay value.
Sales obviously has an influence on what the companies are putting out, but the question is "Do we like what they are putting out now compared to what we are used to?". Blaming the consumer for low quality games is a copout. Companies that are built off quality should be aiming to make quality products.
For me the answer is NO lol. They are releasing half of a game and making you wait and/or pay for the rest. On top of that they are releasing major titles that are very glitchy. 2021 was pretty bad for gaming imo, for me, non major titles held it down this year.

Kingdom hearts 3 is a game i can remember being in development for years without a known release date since the developers were able to take there time and give it good quality, though i guess it still depends on the genre which may cause one thing to have more priority over the other something like a actuall quality game, currently some big titles are cashgrabs as of now but the rest are fine so for me i would say for the most part that no some games aren't really falling off, but for the rest well they're whether it's cuz they decided to be/have a cashgrab, lack of quality, lack of what games are known for, etc.

for me, i’d have to say I agree *multiplayer* video games are dying out because of the heavy focus on micro transactions and now, instead of releasing a full finished game on launch, releasing a half baked one and barely adding any worthwhile content over the course of the year till the next one comes out, like cod, 2k, madden, fifa etc.

Also there were far more genres booming too we had tons of platform games, survival horror was at its peak, arcade, beat'em ups, jrpg's at their peak, way more game series from mega man, castlevania, Klonoa, and more there were just much more then and way more enjoyable characters Koudelka it goes on and on. modern games while there are a few I cannot really find anything that blows me away much nor any real series to really get invested in. I think the place to keep an eye on is the indie scene. While there are TONS of games in that space, and many are different types of platformers, top down action-adventure, etc like so many past games, what this really does is force devs in that space to innovate to stand out. So while lots of games will release, this makes those really stand-out titles shine even more. Hell, even indie horror is heavy on the ps1/sega saturn style visuals at the moment, but there are still a lot of good experiences there despite the same visual style being emulated so much. What we really need is indie multiplayer titles to come up in the indie space more often. I understand the cost of servers could be taxing on dev costs, but it can be done with funding from the public the same way people fund Fortnite, etc. Skins, founders memberships with included access to betas, etc, etc. etc. I could go on and on with ideas in regard to this, but the sentiment is there that as long as the public at large funds AAA, we will get the same AAA games every damn year.

Something I think is a big problem is that there’s a lot more expectations for games today imo. People think because we have the new systems games are required to be more advanced, problem is that game development, while it’s better, is also much harder than it was. Building a full, quality game today that has modern graphics and story takes a lot more than most small game development teams can handle. The only groups that can make major games are big game development corporations and they’re just in it for the money, unfortunately .
Edit: I realize that there are games that have done well despite being very simplistic, im more saying that as games become more advanced in general it will unfortunately limit making advanced games to big development companies who have the budget to spend years developing a big game like that. It’s limiting to indie devs knowing they don’t have the resources to make the type of game they may want to make.

Hell, we have AI in our GPUs now that calculate the hard graphics stuff for us. Blender is easy as cake to learn, I figured it out in less than a day. There is no grandiose expectation for gamers. Just the expectation that a game can actually play, and it plays well enough that you become immersed in it.

Games back in the day challenged you to think logically and try to figure out strategies to overcome obstacles that were extremely difficult. You were rewarded with secret endings, secret stages, unlock things pertaining to the character that made you a million times better or play as a secret character. The feeling u feel after beating a game was legendary. You sit and ponder about all the bs u went thru to get to the end. You felt proud to say I beat this game, you had respect for the game and u may try to master it bc it had high replay value. One game I will say killed my desire to continue was NBA 2k22. I did what seemed to be impossible which is level up to 99.9, Max Badges for my build and Season. My Player still misses shots, videogame engineers leave it up to you to still try to greenlight or get close to it to make shots. You literally have to be wide open to make shots in that game and thats if you time your release really good. Your level can drop under 99 if you lose games online, it's ridiculous. Where's the reward in that especially when NBA 2K is collecting money from consumers to make 90 level builds and up, they don't care. So this is the point that Mark, Leland, Ben and other guy was trying to make by saying videogames have fall off.

I think the reasoning gaming is falling off is because of streaming and shared content. Nothing is a surprise anymore anytime a new element is added to a game it's talked about and streamed on instantly to where things don't feel like personal unique achievements rather than doing it to become a completionist. As to when you say movies are getting better it's because their is still that intimate private experience with the content. You don't see people leaking content on movies or it being streamed/reacted to which leads to better quality experience. Anime falls off because of this currently but movies still hold that privacy factor.

For me, I think a part of the problem tends to be access to the internet (for certain genres) just because it spoils so much of what could be really cool surprises. I've started making a point to play games blind (the temptation is there though) and I think I've been enjoying them a little more that way. I do agree that the DLC mindset seems to make developers complacent about the quality of their projects on launch since you can just patch that later. I also think that there is too much urgency with release dates. Once they open their mouths the clock starts and you gotta get the people a new Batman game in the next 12 months.

I think there's 2 pretty major factors (they aren't the only ones though)
Back in the day, most games were all new, as in they hadn't been done before, either that or they were upgraded/innovated, and you've got these fan based trying to get new versions of the game they like, like new things to do but with the formula being so similar people are getting bored of it, that's why when you get a game that's so different these days it becomes a hit
And the second is companys aren't changing the formula, because of the fact that they need money so they make people buy all these DLCs and stuff, a lot of which you should get for free. Before, most games would give you all this and all that, 100%, and if you wanted to pay for more than you'd get more but you'd always pay for the full product, but companies are trying to get the most money out of you so they do all that if you want to play your favorite franchise or genre of games, so you can get something "new" out of it, and where a lot of new games fail is that "new" stuff you're paying for isn't actually really new

But Ain't no way a fire original idea doesn't exist among all those resources. There's just prioritization on what devs know will sell, and that's not it.

This was a dope discussion. I also believe games aren’t the same as they used to be. I understand dlc is a good way to make some extra cash but some of these companies are getting too comfortable releasing incomplete games needing patches immediately, barely has any real content or hides the real fun stuff behind pay walls. This needs to change.

So true about games. It's not that they've fallen off, it's just that the target audience is gonna consume regardless so they'll just stick to what works. Same thing happens in cinema with the takeover of superhero movies being the biggest at the box office so studios will keep rinsing them for a guaranteed bag rather than going in another direction where you aren't guaranteed.

    • @TheOnlyTaps
      @TheOnlyTaps 년 전

*So you'll still get quality in mostly games that know their target audience won't go for that. So you'll get blockbuster games like God Of War, The Last Of Us, Ghost Of Tsushima etc carrying the quality level while the yearly releases know they can churn out games like McDonald's and people will still buy. Be it COD, 2K, Madden etc

    • @jaredthegamer369

@@jaredthegamer369 Oh yeah no doubt 💯💯💯, both true and probably a whole load of variables beyond that, I was just laughing at the frustration of the audience buying into the same rinsed concepts meaning companies know they can play it safe and still make bag that's why I compare it to like the whole Marvel era of cinema, safe guaranteed IP ends up being cash cows especially with live service games. So people will constantly buy into these microtransactions filled games that end up being more of an online store than a game coz all the loot box and battle pass nonsense is an easier bag than like other genres like single player story games etc 😩😂

"are AAA games falling off" is really what the title should have been considering you only brought up big-name titles. Not that the indie scene hasn't turned into a toxic cesspool of early access bullsh*tory. Also, I think yall have a twisted view because you make gaming content so it's in your best interest to play the big titles every time they come out. So you experience all the nonsense that's happening in the industry. Most people are gonna be a lot more cautious and therefore have a better overall view of gaming.

The price for a new game has barely changed in the last 15 years. I used to pay 40-50 bucks, now its 60 for the standard version. In the meantime the development of high class games has significantly increased in time and difficulty. Developers needed new ways of financing the development cycle and figured out that they can make money with microtransactions to also have an income after launch. This started to become insanely profitable.
Move forward to the year 2012 and forward: there are two standards nowadays. Early access (crowdfunding) to finance a game before its finished (mostly used by small teams) and microtransaction AAA games.
5 developers is nowadays a really small team. Let them work on one game for 2 years for 40k salary each and you are looking at 400k costs. Try finding investors who are willing to pay upfront for an indie game. So crowdfunding/early access is one of the only ways.
Big studios: they have 20+ developers and a AAA game takes years to complete. If it flops you are out of a few million. So they stick with games they know will sell and stick with microtransactions to make insane amount of money. Why take the risk to make a new high quality game? RDR2 took what? 8 years? Best selling game of the year. Compare it to the profit rockstar makes from gta5 its a joke. No reason for them to use their resources for new game ideas.

Tldr: Games are still innovative, but companies are taking fewer risks than they used to. Its just safer to have a herd mentality, unfortunately.
Games haven't fallen off as much as people want to say they have. Yes there's a "lack" of innovation, but thats because its safer to go with the herd. "Oh battle royale's are popluar?" Then lets make a battle royale. "People are feeling match 3's?" Then lets make a match 3. It waaay safer for them because they know they're gonna get a return-on-investment. The pandemic showed us that these companies aren't as rich as we think they are. Theyre living paycheck to paycheck too. Whens the last time a new character was created that spearheaded their own franchise. Not as many as there used to be, again because its safer to put the same old characters in a new genre. But there are still some games/genres that innovation is crucial to their survival/innovation is their only ticket in. Mobas need to make new characters every few weeks otherwise it gets stale and people leave. And every battle royale needs its gimmick to get people to even give it a chance. So all in all, games aren't falling off, its just that risks are fewer and far between. There are some gems tho, like Middle earth shadow of mordor and Horizon.
