I was there! :D As a former pro symphony player, I can explain why there were a lot of tempo/rhythm issues.
First, it's important to know that it is very normal for symphonies to only have a few rehearsals (usually 3) before the concert. However, most of the time, these setlists are comprised of pieces that the players have already played (commonly played symphonies, concerti, etc.). Apparently the orchestra only had one rehearsal prior to the concert. The Genshin pieces, although most of them are easier than classical repertoire in terms of technical difficulty, might've been more difficult in the context of being more unfamiliar to the musicians.
The pieces that had rhythmic issues (Caelestium Finale Termini, Liyue and Inazuma battle themes, etc.) were ones with fast, intricate notes and articulations layered with polyrhythms. Playing these rhythms tightly as an ensemble would be difficult under normal circumstances, but the musicians also had the hurdle of needing to listen through in ear monitors, which present two problems in the context of orchestra:
    1) typically each instrument/section's sound reaches the conductor/audience at different times because they are different distance away. This isn't what most pro symphony players are used to unless they have experience playing in a scoring (recording) orchestra, which have completely different environments and seating.
    2) There will be a discrepancy between the click track coming through their in ear monitors, the rhythm they hear from their other ear (sound from orchestra) and the beat pattern from the conductor. For example, they will be listening to a metronome that is synced with the ethnic instrument track, rhythm from the percussion section that is slightly delayed because they are in the back of the stage, rhythm from other instruments that you will need to base your counterpoint rhythm off of, and also watching and trying to follow the conductor's beat pattern.
All these can be very confusing for an ensemble that: was hired separately (gigging musicians instead of all belonging to the same orchestra), has spent very little time rehearsing together, was being put in an unfamiliar monitoring situation, has only gotten the sheet music a week before, and was working with guest conductor. I assure you these are all professional musicians who are very capable of playing difficult stuff under pressure. But all these cofounding factors can affect the ensemble's synergy and in this situation it was the rhythmic synergy that took a hit.

@@MidnightCityMusic I was at the LA venue as well! I was in a symphony for a good portion of my childhood so I have a decent grasp on music theory and whatnot, and I could definitely tell that they struggled with the polyrhythms, especially with "rapid as wildfires" and dvalin's battle theme. Like you mentioned, sound hits everyone's ears based on where they're located within the venue, so its easy for slip ups to occur, though they did a good job of correcting their mistakes and coming back together. I was sitting in the upper left mezzanine close to the wall so the sound definitely bounced off the walls a bit before reaching us, which probably amplified the discrepancies. It was still an amazing show nonetheless!
I brought my boyfriend with me to the concert, and he's not as well versed with the soundtrack as I am, and genuinely could not tell that some of the rhythms were off until we got back to the car and played them from the album for him to hear. To someone whos never heard it before, it still sounded amazing. One thing that I noticed with the Liyue (mainly Rex Incognito) is that they used the violin section to emulate the erhu that can be heard in his trailer. I had mixed feelings on how much I liked it initially but after going back and listening a few times it's grown on me quite a bit.
I'm definitely glad I got to go to the concert, the ticket release was right around my birthday, so it was a belated treat for myself. Genshin's soundtrack is easily my favorite by far and has inspired me to get back into making piano/symphonic covers of various tracks. I have a lot of work cut out for me in 2024 but hearing amazing compositions like these keep me going!
(Also I absolutely love your work along with tnbee, you guys are my role models and I aspire to one day be as skillful as the two of you! Keep up the amazing work!)

I was sitting with some fellow content creators in Orchestra Right so I was sliightly closer to the stage. I've gotta go back to listen to Rex Incognito then! I do remember the violin solo being a bit covered up in the mix, but maybe it'll grow on me too!

The reason why we all felt underwhelm or just downright ripped off was that Genshin is supposed to be well rehearsed with cultural melodies played by cultural instruments. This concert only has a Koto (Japanese Harp) everything else was a replacement. It was insulting and aweful. The couple next to me were NOT impressed. I wasn't either. I payed $1500 for the hotels, plane ticket, ticket itself to see this. Shame on the organizers. They clearly didn't rehearse.

I left the concert VERY unsatisfied. The violinists kept messing up, song pieces weren't played exactly as they should, and the piano added extras notes where you can tell it was a mistake. I was so underwhelmed and felt ripped off after it ended. They BARELY played some Fontaine music but it was so small and quick at the very end that it felt like it didn't count.
This was such a shame. I had *HIGH* expectations for this concert and it really let me down.

I wasent let down by the playlist as it seemed to be almost identical at majority of concerts, but the people playing the music felt like they have only seen the sheet music for a week now. Someone else in Boston said the same thing which is disappointing. My only wish is that they see how many people love this music and want to see it live, so they actually invest much more into it next year.
I am sure the performers on stage are extremely talented but they felt unrehearsed for this setlist and im not sure if thats hoyo to blame or the company they are using for the performers

@@maelka7969 so i did some research into this after my last comment and found some things. First the orchestra was filled with top notch professionals. The big issue at least for LA was according to one of the performers from the orchestra the first time they even saw the sheet music was one week before, and the first time they ever played it together was 3 hours before the event started. That alone would cause even the best performers out there to mess up some parts because its still new to them. This issue is top priority and needs addressed for the future.

YA IKR but to be fair the first concert was September 29, 2023 and idk when the genshin concert tour was first announced and how long every orchestra had to rehearse and practice (probably around a year if I had to guess). sumeru came out August 24, 2022. idk if you noticed too but during the sumeru songs they literally showed under development footage on the big screen LOL (bottom right says “This is under development and is not indicative of the final product”). it could also be like an issue with communication since LA and many other concerts are overseas (i wouldn’t be surprised if the other concerts overseas played the same exact songs too). i saw a list of what every concert was supposed to play and this concert followed exactly that.

@@Rezoruu apparently the orchestra musicians (in US) were hired at different places for the show only, with probably just 1 rehearsal a day before the concert. At least this is what happened on October 28th Boston's concert. It definitely explained why there's so many issues from communication, logistics, instrumentation, and orchestra playing itself. I assumed no musician they hired actually played Genshin game or music at all, their understanding to the music itself is very very poor, which resulted in a lot of detail and musicality execution issues.
I'll see how the rest of the US concert goes. Probably I'll send an email to Mihoyo on this and explain some issues that observed and offer some potential solutions to make it better. First year is always rough.

I was there and while I had fun due to being able to spend time with a close friend and chatting with other fans, I do think that the overall performance was very underwhelming especially in comparison to all the other locations/performances. The lack of key and highly important cultural instruments was a HUGE detriment and really decreased the quality of the show. There is honestly no excuse for not having said instruments and performers due to how culturally diverse LA is and how wide a variety of talents are available. Also the lack of a choir or any vocals at all was an even bigger disappointment. It’s a shame considering how expensive the tickets were and how impressive all the other shows were.

I actually didn’t like the original much because of the initial anti-drop and there was too much going on in the end, but this one just kind of smooth everything over nicely. Thanks to the lack of electronic instruments perhaps? 😂 sorry.
The grandiose build up, the very prominent sound of koto in the silent parts that I barely heard in the original, the drums and the way the final part of the theme end up sounding melancholic is definitely a different take but I like it a lot, especially after when you just walked out of her teaser theme which was also quite beautiful and emotional. My sister said after that that this rendition is like Ei’s version to the original which is the Shogun’s version and I really really like that, it makes me appreciate the original more too.

my genshin concert 2023 (for journaling)

    • @Rezoruu
      @Rezoruu  4 개월 전

at the time i found out about the genshin concert, all the tickets were sold out and i was kind of sad knowing i couldn’t attend such an event. at a much later date (10/13/2023), i realized that there were resale tickets. at that time, the cheapest were $200-$300. to attend an event like this, i knew i didn’t want to miss out on it so i bought a ticket. i also thought that i found a really good seat for $306.25 in addition to ticket coverage for $21.47. i was really happy with the purchase at that time because i didn’t see any other better seats at any better prices. i also went online and saw videos of the concert in shanghai, singapore, and malaysia. ultimately, the shanghai video convinced me that it’d be worth it.
occasionally, i remember i would search online everywhere looking for groups to possibly go to the venue or hang out with before the show since i didn’t want to go alone and i thought it’d be cool to meet some people who share the same interest and are attending the same event. i ended up with no success up until the day of the concert and so i started asking some of my friends. one of my friends agreed and then we searched for seats together. what was shocking was that there were a ton more open seats for way cheaper (lowest being like $80). we ended up finding a seat like 7 rows in front of me and i was extremely jealous. i’m also going to talk about how awful the axs website and app was trying to buy another ticket (i had no issues getting my ticket a month ago). so as i was trying to find seats for him, the axs website marked me as a bot and i couldn’t access the page anymore. i had no clue what i was doing differently from when i bought my ticket a month ago, but i was pretty much ip blocked from the website from there on. after trying multiple different browsers and even trying on my phone with no success, i tried contacting their live support and they were equally as unhelpful. they asked if i tried refreshing the website, restarting my browser or pc, or if i was connected to the internet or had my firewall or antivirus enabled. eventually i gave up with support (idk if i can even buy tickets from axs anymore), i had my friend make an account and he used my card to buy the ticket and it costed a total of $134.75 same day (no coverage) and we went together.
i had butterflies in my stomach the entire time driving to the venue. i was so excited. this was something i was looking forward to for so long. i was even chatting with my mom before leaving about how i excited i was to go and she was happy for me (she wanted to go too but had plans for that day).
so after arriving at the destination, i had no idea where to park. i remember entering the nearest parking lot to me at the time (it was an outside parking lot managed by a couple of people) and it was marked $50 while we were waiting for our turn to pay. my friend and i thought that price was insane. that’s the most we’ve ever seen for parking. and when it was our turn to pay the parking fee, i had to ask about the price and if this was actually for the peacock theater and they were like, “yeah, $60”. they literally changed the price to $60 on the sign right in front of us and it was $50 when we got there. i didn’t want to complain so i paid the parking fee and went on. all we had to do was cross the street and we’d be at the venue
there were A LOT of people. we arrived like almost an hour before doors opened. some people weren’t there for the genshin concert since they were wearing lakers jerseys and stuff. i didn’t realize the crypto arena was right across the peacock theater either. so when we got there, there was this massive line that wrapped and expanded anywhere it could. a lot of people didn’t have a clue where to go or couldn’t figure out which line is which. after a bit of walking around, i pretty much had an idea of where the genshin concert line was (the cosplays helped a lot). in the first line that we got into, we got to chat with some people and got to know about what brought them there in the first place, why and how they got into genshin, etc. there were people we talked to that were from all different places in the world. we talked to people who drove from san francisco, people who were from different states like new york, texas and florida, and people who traveled overseas (china) just to be able to experience the genshin concert since they weren’t able to experience it where they’re from in addition to visiting LA
the doors opened at 6 PM and the line split up into 4. it took a while for everyone to get inside. from where we were lining up outside, it took us around 10 minutes to get security checked and into the main lobby. the same time we got cleared, we were given the physical commemorative ticket and a redemption code. we noticed a pretty long line at the beginning which was for getting pictures with the genshin concert background located at the center of the main lobby. from there, you could choose to go to your seat inside the theater or get merch or take a picture with the genshin background. my friend and i chose to wait in line for the picture. while in line, we got to ask a lot of cosplayers walking by for pictures. everyone we met were so kind and happily willing to take photos with us. props to everyone who went to the concert dressed up like that while it’s cold out. one thing i didn’t like about the main lobby is that there wasn’t a lot room and the lighting was so dim so all of my pictures didn’t turn out that well. we waited around half an hour to get the picture which was fine since there was about 20 min left to get to our seats. the staff were also kind and helpful in guiding us where to go to reach our seats. i talked to my friend about switching seats so that i could get the better view and he was perfectly okay with it.
the theater was hugee. definitely the biggest one i’ve ever been to. i got seated at around 6:50 PM. in the time i was waiting for the concert to start, i admired everything around me. there were so many people that day who went to appreciate the same thing i came there for. the game.. the music… this journey with genshin…. it felt too real to be true. i was there. everybody around me looked so happy to be there, everybody was excited. the atmosphere was bustling. it was past 7 PM, some of the seats around me were still empty. people were still arriving at their seats. the show didn’t start until 20 minutes later.

the beginning of the show hit me the hardest. i teared up a couple of times when the first couple of tracks played (i couldn’t hold it in). that feeling is incomparable to any other game ive ever played. i didn’t really have any major complaints with mondstadt (apart from them only showing venti as the only character theme for mondstadt, and during the first track “overture of storms” where there were some weird pauses and video playing with no sound) and dragonspine (i thought dragonspine was kind of short, they only played 3 songs and went back to mondstadt to play 3 more). for the first section of the symphony, mondstadt had 13 songs and dragonspine had 3 songs played (around 30 minutes total). the crowd was pretty silent throughout mondstadt and dragonspine too. also, i might’ve noticed some slight mistimed parts here and there but i didn’t think much of it, the whole song was played regardless (caelestinum finale termini was the most noticeable). right after, the first intermission was 15 minutes long.
after intermission, i was hoping they would probably play more mondstadt tracks but the orchestra started playing liyue songs. i didn’t really have any major complaints with liyue either (apart from weird breaks in between songs and rex incognito feeling a little bit underwhelming). for the second section of the symphony, 16 songs were played for liyue (around 40 minutes total). there was a lot more of a crowd reaction for liyue than mondstadt. there was even some mistimed parts too (most noticeable in the beginning of rapid as wildfires). also, i'm not sure if it’s part of their performance, but in between a lot of the liyue (and inazuma) tracks, there were a lot of short-long pauses between each track (i understand the orchestra needs time to prepare, but some breaks between tracks were pretty long like the whole 1 minute pause right before playing rex incognito). after liyue, the second intermission was also 15 minutes long.
upon returning from intermission, i was hoping they would play more liyue songs but inazuma started playing instead. for the third section of the symphony, only 8 songs were played from inazuma. there were some crowd reactions for inazuma when ayaka, thoma, raiden, and yae miko made an appearance. inazuma was fine until they moved onto sumeru. inazuma was so short, and short is such an understatement. my friend and i were looking forward to character themes like yoimiya’s, kokomi’s, kazuha’s or even yae miko’s and much more inazuma tracks. a slight disappointment and a shock to hear sumeru being played so soon. i genuinely thought they might go back to inazuma this time but they didn’t. raiden’s track, “termination of desires”, felt super under-delivered. at first, i thought it was kind of cool that they were using replacement instruments for the song but it didn’t quite fit idk. it would’ve certainly been better if they used the right instruments.
sumeru was also kind of disappointing because they only played 3 songs (at least they played hustle and bustle of ormos). i also don't know why under development footage was showing on the big screen, i thought sumeru was out for a while now (more than a year ago). after i noticed the under development footage, my expectations sank. and no intermission in between inazuma and sumeru?? the finale was the most disappointing part of the symphony. they did the bait where the conductor leaves off stage but he comes back to finish the concert with 3 last songs from fontaine which no one (around me) really caught on to. i have not explored a lot of fontaine yet and my friend just unlocked sumeru so both of us and many others had no idea what was going on. the people around me looked very confused since they were looking at each other and looking around. someone next to me even said aloud that they thought the orchestra were playing songs from a different game. the entire inazuma, sumeru, and fontaine (around 45 minutes total) part felt soso rushed. i wouldn’t have minded staying way longer to hear them play more songs but i think that’s all they practiced to do.
after the concert, everyone piled trying to get out. as i was exiting, i noticed another super long line and it was for merch. i tried my best to quickly get in line. the line was incredibly long despite not being the last to exit. it went all the way from the theater entrance to one of the exits in the back. the line folded from where i was because of how long it was. i texted my friend to meet me somewhere along the merch line and eventually he met up with me. the merch line didn’t move at all until another 10 minutes later. this merch line alone took up 50 minutes from where i was at to get to the front. the entire time in line, i was thinking to myself that there probably wouldn’t be anymore merch by the time i get to the table. i also missed a bunch of opportunities to take pictures with some really cool cosplays that i saw walk by outside of the building. after the wait, we finally reached the merch table and there were still a surprising amount of things still left in stock (some were sold out). i ended up buying $153.31 worth of genshin merch (genshin concert t-shirt, ganyu cd pendant, zhongli stand, eula stand, albedo stand, and xiao zoo plush). if there was still stock, i would’ve definitely bought one of each.
all the criticism aside, i didn’t really give all of my attention to the mistakes during the performance and just enjoyed everything played that night in addition to being there spending time with others who came for the same reason i did. it was still an experience i’d never forget. huge thanks to all the performers and Eric Roth, they did great and gave us a show. i got to meet some really cool people while in line and we got to talk about something we both shared an interest in. it was honestly a really memorable experience for me and i really hope future live concerts will deliver better results close to every other concert. i look forward to attending the next genshin concert!

the long pauses were probably from the koto player having to adjust her instrument if you noticed her on stage. when she’s done she would nod to the conductor and then they would proceed.

Genshin concerts are super popular. Mihoyo should get a big stadium, like the Hollywood Bowl, and really invest in a good full orchestra, fully rehearse them and tour around the country. They will make a lot of money back and provide life-time show to huge amount of people, like the Taylor Swift shows.
