The way all music shops were when I was a kid in the 70s ... everything was Mon & Pop and had so much soul and character.

Rhett, I was happy to see you buy something. I try to spend my money at the businesses that I want to see remain open. Even if it’s just strings and picks I do my best to keep my money in the small, privately-owned shops.

THANK YOU RHETT! For years I’ve been trying to remember who made the amplifier I played in my high school band. It was in the 1970s (yes I’m old) but the only things I remembered about it were the three little colored switches and the fact it had built-in effects. Every now and then I would go on the Internet and try to find one picture to trigger my memory, but never had any luck. It was an SG Systems 100 watt head and my dad built me two 4 x 12 cabinets to go with it. I don’t remember much about it or why I bought it (after high school I sold it and bought a first or second year Roland JC-100 that I still own today) - but seeing the SG again reminds me of when me and my best friends were the rock stars of our school. Thank you again for going to that little shop in Atlanta and putting the question that’s been bugging me forever to rest.

AVG is my local shop. Greg Henderson and crew know their stuff. Worth the trip as the shop always has some unique and vintage items you won’t find elsewhere. And yes, the stories Greg and Spencer have are second to none!

I work for a small, independently owned guitar shop in Vancouver, Canada, Rufus Guitar Shop where I do the photos and video. Much of my video skills learned from watching this channel and others like it. Love the personality of that shop owner.

Reminds of a shop that just closed by my house. Had an old guy who used to work at the Kalamazoo Gibson plant. He and the 2 friends he worked with at the shop would tell stories about the old plant all the time. It was hilarious.

I fucking love guitar stores, nothing like going in there and seeing the people who work there love music as much as you do, I could spend all day in one.

"He read the whole Mel Bay book" 😂 That is classic. I liked the owner. The thing that drives me a bit crazy in nearly any guitar store is I can never get Gibson's in tune in those shops (and you had a similar problem!).

Hey Rhett, I had an SG 215 amp in my collection. That amp was something special. On August 16 2021 my house in Grizzly Flats, Ca burned down (Caldor Fire). I lost everything, every guitar I built (11), everything in our house, gone, burned down. My wife and I got our dog out and a few clothes and other necessary stuff. I'd love to have that SG 215 you played but I still do not have a house. I am happy to see that amp, it's in such great condition. Thank you for sharing this video. Maybe next year when we move to Texas, I'll find something cool to play again.

That was my first “real” amp. I bought mine used in 1979 because BB King said he liked them in a Guitar Player interview.
I still have it but it’s been in non-working condition for years. I’m going to do a rebuild series for it sometime next year.

Well that was just fun, and what a great way to spend a Saturday just wandering and playing with stuff in a gorgeous little shop, like his!! We need much more of that personal kind of small business, and it's shops like his where you can find those hidden gems! Thanks for the tour, you take us on the Best field trips!!

I had an SG Systems 410 in the mid 70’s. It was a Gibson/Norlin product. It had a built in Maestro phase shifter, a basic overdrive knob and a big notch filter knob. It was a great sounding amp, and the cabinet was like a road case…very solid but heavy. It became a service problem, because it did not use standard power amp tubes…some weird oddball part number…not a 6L6 or EL34 or any of the common ones found in Fenders or Marshalls…I sold it…and got something I could actually keep working…

Got to record an album a few years back and the studio had two of those SG combos, some of the most interesting sounding amps I've ever heard, and they were GREAT!

Wow, crazy, my dad has that cool SG amp, which he played with his original Gibson Sg with p90s, and one of the songs he plays is that song by Link Wray, still has both the amp and the guitar, this episode really hit close to home for me

That P90 SG into the Supro was such a great vintage tone.

Hey! That "SG Systems" amp is actually built by Standel amps. After Bob had issues with the last line of Standel amps due to faulty transformers, he ended up folding and selling the company to Randall amps. They picked up his company and he remained president while also being appointed vice president of engineering at Randall. After a while, both companies were bought by CMI, primarily Gibson. By the early 70's, Gibson had the amplifiers rebranded "SG Systems", or "Standel-Gibson" until they plagiarized Don and Bob's work for their G-Series amps. They were phased out after just a year of operation.
The story of Standel amps is a bit of a wild one, with many fascinating points like how Standel was the first company to design hybrid amps, or how Bob designed what would later be the infamous Sonic Maximizer. It's a story I've been documenting after getting more stories from Dan Mckinney, but it's a project I haven't had any time to turn into a video documentary. I do have one of the rarest products he ever built, a solid state variant of an oil can delay. Maybe I should get started on that hahaha.

What an awesome shop! Right on man! That’s the kinda place that I would make a weekly stop, just to be friendly, but also because who knows what you’ll find there on a random Saturday morning.

Mosrite pickups being a 'hotter P90' is an understatement. The ones in my '67 Ventures measure at like 12.5-14k. I can have a pedal/amp setup that is distorted but manageable with any of my other guitars, then plug the Mosrite into it and get instant wailing feedback and chaos. They're HOT. Also....yeah that fretboard serial number stamp? Mine is gone because 12th Fret in Portland SANDED IT OFF when they did a refret on it for me. WTF guys? I'll never sell it so it's not a big deal but I was really surprised based on how good of a reputation the shop had.
BTW it's not a Morley phase shifter in the amp the video is named about. It's a Maestro. Look up photos of Maestro phasers and you'll see those same blue yellow red switches. I dug a chassis of one out of the trash years ago thinking I could remove the phaser circuit and rehouse it as a pedal. Never got around to it and sold it to a friend.

OMG! I forgot I had one of these SG amps when I first started playing. I immediately recognized it (duh of course because it looks unique and they were all blue) I don’t remember selling it so I think it stopped working and I gifted it to someone.
I really loved the features of this amp. WOW ! I totally am amazed to see one again after all this time. Thanks Rhett and thanks to the shop for this amazing blast from the past. Also I played a 60’s Melody Maker fit with a Gibson humbucker and a 70’s Tele pickup. Love the necks on Melody Makers and it was nice seeing that car shop repaint. I practiced over a garage that did that and had an old mustang refinished there in blue.

I have a peavey bandit 65. Inherited it from my grandfather with my first guitar in the early 2000’s. The clean channel is great and the spring reverb tank is really unique! Love it.

I live in Woodstock ga and I go to atl vintage all the time they are truly my favorite guitar shop.

Oh man the AxSys 212. I had one and to be fair it WAS cool to have different sounds dialed in, and the pedalboard was pretty useful. But I turned it on to play a show and it all of a sudden cycled through the presets uncontrollably. They wanted more than I paid for it used to fix, so I took the guts out and put a Kustom III Lead head in it. But the Kustom III kind of sucked, so I took that out too. It's now just a 2x12 cabinet with one original and one greenback in it, wired for one or the other at a time. It does that job!

I’ve been there once to play a early 60’s brown panel super. Had to hear that harmonic trem! I bought a 83 small stone 5 years ago from a dude for $50. I tried selling on eBay couple years later. Dude in UK that collected them told me to take it down and not sell it. This particular one was one of the better ones he said. I asked him why he didn’t just buy it, he said he had 3 of them 🤣 I took it down and it’s my favorite pedal and I’ll never let it go!

I've got one of those small stones on my shelf that I bought new back in the 70's. Still works. I've also got a Peavey classic 50 2x12 I bought new in 77. It still works too. I went in to look at a Fender amp but was way out of my price range, and left with the Peavey instead. It was almost half the price.

I bought my Modulus Graphite Quantum Five from Atlanta Discount Music in Sep 95. It was the first piece they got in from Modulus, and had been displayed at the NAMM show that year. I still have it.

My friend had one of those SG amps when we were teenagers in the late 70’s. It was such a unique looking amp. I hope you tried the phase shifter part of the amp. As the owner said, it is a built in maestro shifter. Not a subtle effect.

I have a clone of the Mosrite Combo that Rhett looks at initially. It was made for a house brand of a Montreal music store, and appears to be a very accurate repro, complete with German carve, zero fret, M-shaped headstock, and the same cast-aluminum bridge and vibrato assembly with the offset mounting holes for strings in the tailpiece. The big difference is that it came with humbuckers, rather than the Mosrite P90 style pickups. The quirkiest feature, though, is that it lacks any center block and is fully hollow, like an Epi Casino, but uses an extra thick top. Tap on the top and acoustically it sounds like a solid body. The back is a more "normal" thickness for a semi, and tapping on it *sounds* like its a hollow-body guitar. I've never seen that sort of thick top used anywhere else. But then, I suppose if you're going to mount a Bigsby-like unit to the body (rather than a tailpiece affixed to the end-pin), you'll want some sort of structurally rigid top.

I love the way Rhett instantly identifies tones in his head and whips out examples of songs that use those tones. His skills at dialing in the amp and guitar settings and recognizing the tones and matching them up to songs in his memory are remarkable. Rhett has a great ear. I am excited to watch him continue progressing as a song writer and player and documentary producer.

I have that same CMI SG System amp...love it! It's my favorite amplifier. Mine is a 1x15 model. Killer unique stuff!

You missed the golden opportunity to play that woodgrain old Peavey guitar through a Peavey amp.

I own an old ampeg guitar head, 100 watt. Not many people knew ampeg made guitar heads but they sound amazing. Found it at a pawn shop for $30 because it "needed major repairs." So after changing the tubes and giving it a rebias and changing out the old wiring, she's my favorite amp head now.

I bought one of those SG sound systems back in 75 or 76, when it first came out. I think it was one of the first amps that had a phase shifter built in. I loved that amp! I was in a Deep Purple cover band so it wasn't too useful as far as it can go. But when we needed the phase shifter it was the best back then.

I used to have an SG Systems in the 70's. I used it in my high school band. It was plenty loud and since I didn't know much about tone then, it seemed great. Plus those are my initials, SG. In the 80's I traded it to a guy and I can't remembers what I got for it. It may have been a Takamine 12 string and a tape deck. I also had the little Gibson solid state that was on top of it. I gave that to my girlfriends sister. A few years ago I was able to find the exact model in excellent condition with an MOD speaker in it. Just for childhood memories, My dad bought it for me. Now if I could find the red Sekova Fuzz Box that I had.......

A friend of mine in Japan owned a guitar store in Tokyo. The Mosrite Ventures model was his favorite guitar. He probably has the largest collection of them in existence. He had some amazing guitars.

I was cleaning out some of my old guitar gear and found my very FIRST pedal. Yep, a vintage original 1970's electro harmonix small stone phaser. Still sounds great...
