    I can still remember when I was a child over 50 years ago watching the elders that made homemade kitchen and hunting knives with metal from the oldest cross cut saws they had. They told me the older those old saws are, the best metal was used making them because the metal was perfectly made to hold an edge and last us hundreds of years. Today it's so easy to cut those saw blades using a CNC machine or a plasma cutter to get the blanks and sharpen them and put a handle on them. Also the oldest rail road spikes you can find work great an use the ones with HC on the heads, high carbon and they will hold an edge and last hundreds of years also. An if you spent the time to make a beautiful razor sharp knife, make sure you or someone else makes the right case for it to wear on your belt or in the kitchen. Show off your hard work and put your name on it or makers mark. Don't forget to share your knowledge of how to make them. We have lost to many old ways already, don't add to the list not teaching others. I just shared with you few things I knew. An if you use old cross cut saws to make you a knife, I know it will last you a life time and hundreds of years more.

      This is nonsense. Modem steel is better in every way. Cleaner, better alloyed and with less detrimental impurities. I am metallurgist, I made steel, stainless steel, and nickle based for years. I heat treat and evaluate the microstructure of steel daily.
      Railroad spikes are low quality, dirty steel.

    • @JanglePangle
      @JanglePangle 4 개월 전 +2

      @@MatrixCoreteamthere is a nugget of truth in there in that old saws, or at least those that survive to this day, generally used more suitable steel than cheap new ones, simply because they're trying to maximise profit and quality carbon steel is more expensive.

    I'm an iron worker. We erect all the steel in buildings. I just wanted you to know that rebar is some of the softest and crappiest steel used. It like that so they can bend it into the shapes they need. If you're going to make a knife, may I suggest you use something a little higher quality like ball bearings or gears of some kind. I've seen people use spring shocks from trucks or cars. Just thought I'd let you know incase you didn't know that. Keep up the awesome work man !!! Cheers!

      hello , this is old Bulgarian rebar piece made of structural steel (something like 0.35 % carbon) and you are right - it is not very good for fine cutting edge. But if you look carefully I split it in half and add a piece of flat bar steelin the middle. And this middle piece is 80CrV2 steel - so the softer steel goes on the sides for support and easy sharpening , the center piece is hard steel good for edge retention :) And thank you for the nice comment , I will keep it up :)

      It's actually a fun good decent Hobby that you can do in your backyard and learn relatively easy. Just like anything the more you do it the better you'll become. But the basics are pretty simple. I've been working with metal for over 20 years. You can also make it a good amount of money with the skills. Highly recommended

      @@davidt5200 how much money can you possibly make with the time you got a put in the equipment you have to have I mean the material is cheap because it’s just junk metal but I mean I guess if you want to do it and anvil and a hammer, flux, and a stove I guess I don’t know when I watch that forged on TV hydraulic presses and all I’m no stranger to contracting. I am a mechanical contractor, so I am worth of metal my whole life to just not in that capacity but I’d like to do it ain’t going away is asking I don’t know that there’s that much money in it. If you get elaborate, I’d like to hear it.

      Заточить можно все что угодно - если нужно пару раз резануть на камеру. По существу: арматура это низколегированная сталь задача которой работать на разрыв. Мартенсит(особо твердая субстанция - самая суть закалки) не получится ищ-за низкого количества углерода. Плюс цвет металла когда он опускает в жидкость(не понятно какую) явно выше 800 град. - а это не про закалку. Так что видео не о чем. Ах да, забыл сказать про то что ржаветь такой нож будет на ура), так что это точно не нож для Шефа

      @@literallyafuckingspoon8801 You know what would be even easier.... buying a knife. Why go through the trouble to make your own custom knife. Use a forge and hammer out the steel. Then cut a corner like full tang ?? Some cheap mass produced kitchen knives still come with full tangs.
