I've always been curious what it would be like to wear the outfits off of store mannequins... so I went to 7 different stores and wore exactly what their mannequins did for 7 days straight, to compare their styles, trends, and strategies. I wore clothes from Forever 21, H&M, TopShop, Hollister, Francesca's, Zara, and Urban Outfitters!

Off topic but, I have a theory: What if clothing stores have their clothes scattered around so if you ARE looking for a specific item, it would be "hidden". This causes you to stay longer and looking at other clothes you don't intend on buying, but buy it anyway. Giving the company more money. AGAIN this is just a theory.

Yeah it’s a thing. That’s also the reason why in supermarkets they (usually) have first necessity items in the back, like milk and bread. It’s for you to walk past all of their products and hopefully end up buying something else.

I used to work at Old Navy staging the store, and generally they give you photos of what they want the outfits to look like, but one time we didn’t have any of the items, so the manager told me to “throw an outfit together” that included a more expensive item and went with the theme. It was like 4AM and I was tired and wanted to go home, so I put together what I thought was a hideous outfit. The next day when the store opened, some guy bought the EXACT outfit for his girlfriend. Couldn’t decide if I was an unintentional trendsetter or the guy had terrible taste.

I actually accidentally created a mannequin look for a store once! I went into a store I had never been in before with my friends and put together an outfit. When I came out to show my friends the store manager came over, complimented me, and asked if she could copy the look for a display. I agreed and the mannequin was up in the center of the store for 2 months! One of the only times I felt fashionable!

as a current francesca's employee mad props to the stylist who put together that mannequin. luckily our requirements for mannequins aren't crazy, they all just have to be in a similar color palette to the section they're in and include matching accessories

I've got a hilarious cousin that sometimes likes to dress up as mannequins and go pose in a store. She's super good at standing still for a long time. People walk up to her and try to figure out if she is real, or a wax figure or something, then all she does is turn her head and it scares the shit out of them. I'll film it some time if I can.

The Hollister outfit actually did feel beachy to me, with like the dress being what you put on to go hang out with your friends at the beach and the cardigan being something you brought along and then put on once night fell and you were all huddled around the bonfire

After this video came out, I went on a four month long search for those trousers from Topshop and eventually, on my birthday, I found the beige plaid version, which I absolutely love. The hem on the ankle role-ups does keep breaking so I've resewn them several times, but I love them so much

I used to work at Francesca's and we'd have to dress the mannequin by sections of the store. Each clothing section in the store had a name and each mannequin had to represent that section. As far as accessories we just had to pick something that would match the outfit.
