- Choker necklaces: a relic of the 1990s or the 2590s BC? I take a closer look into the history of one of my favorite trends from elementary school and adulthood: the choker. From gold beads to plastic, it's definitely evolved over the past few thousand years.

I'm so glad safiya left buzzfeed! This video shows how creative and talent she really is. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
Gissel Montega I totally agree. The "content over quality" notion that people who left BuzzFeed talk about was very apparent in this video. BuzzFeed would never do a video like this because it took a lot of research and time.
But it was a great video!
Gissel Montega ikr? she's so intelligent, so creative, so thorough in her research... her talent is so much better used independently here.
Gissel Montega hey my like turned it from 1.1 to 1.2
Gissel Montega I thought you were going to throw shade at her at first😂
almost all of buzzfeed’s important people in videos have left
Ugh, this is pristine. As a history major, I literally feed off of videos like these. Gaining miscellaneous knowledge is my thang.
Reneé Evelyn totally unrelated but you are gorgeous!! 💗
MsBieberBeadles aww, thank you so much babe! 💕✨
Yass.
I like that she did her research and is also enjoying what she’s talking about at the same time
I’ve never worn chokers... and I don’t know why I’m watching this.
I've worn it twice or three times . One bc somebody in my class wanted me to try and and 2nd for picture day lol and I think on my moms wedding I dont remember
I love my chokers!

I'm glad that Saf left buzzfeed because I feel like she can branch out more and reach her full potential. These videos are so much better than the buzzfeed ones.
^.....what?
ARMYYY
saf left buzzfeed?
I was half expecting you to say
“The choker was created in the 1800’s to choke English criminals...”
Safiya: the history of chokers
Me: StRaNgUlAtiOn😈
Safiya: neck protection
Me:oh...
thats what i thought too~ ngl im kinda dissapointed😅
i was expecting actual choking devices since you know “chokers”
I just came here after seeing the popular comment about heckies (about hiding neck stuff but it was actually diseases) a few comments before this one to feel "OH I'M NOT ALONE" and idk about you but maybe I watch/read too much horror lol
I thought the same too. Trust me, I've got a serious neck fetish.
This is so awesome! You're using a topic and title that is likely to attract teenagers/millenials and teaching them about history, that's fucking great and more educational than anything buzzfeed has ever done.
Truuuuu
Ami Z. Why does it always have to come back to buzzfeed?
I is Noodl That's where most people know Safiya from, so obviously the content on this channel is going to be compared to the content she used to make with Buzzfeed.
Okay but why are you a better teacher than all the actual teachers at my school
if shes better then the teachers at your school then your principal made a huge mistake to hire em then

Safiya: Royals wore chokers way back in ancient times for various reasons
Me: Does that include Cinderella?
She WORE A BLACK RIBBON!!!!’ SHES A LESBEAN!!!!!
@@sophiavincent7785 ????
jaja me too, i was all the time like "when is she gonna mention cinderella???"
I take it since this is pretty old, the ol history video idea didn’t catch on. It’s a shame really. These are super interesting and I learned so much.
This is what culture APPRECIATION looks like. It's super refreshing to see someone of her online celebrity to be so educated in today's fashion, when everyone is always pointing fingers at who is and isn't appropriating culture.
Jason Yanto YEEESSSS👏🏼👏🏼
Jason Yanto I agree, but I don't think many people who are against appropriation (like myself) find this to be appropriation at all since its a common cultural aspect (unless copied like the meaningfillled African beads)
Now that's difference between Saf and others.... Love you Safiya.. Keep making such vids 😄🙌
We should all applaud Saf for the invention of the phrase "Dressed to Depress".
Have you really never heard that phrase before? It's been a thing forever.
I am Jungshook No.. I know what I said. "Dress to depress" has been a thing for decades.
I think you're mistaken and need to do a little research before trying to correct someone. Otherwise you just come off as extremely ignorant.
Saimeren he said “but i’m not sure” m8
Lily Cat Right. Exactly the point I made two weeks ago. Why try to correct someone on something you're unsure about? He clearly doesn't know me, or the topic at hand.
I said that the phrase "Dressed to depress" has been around for a long time, and that the OP shouldn't credit Saf for "inventing" it. "I am Jungshook" decided to try to correct me and insert other words into my mouth. "You must mean this.. Not this."
No.. I know what I said. I said it for a very specific reason.
If you're too lazy, ignorant, or arrogant to do the very basic research on a topic, than you have absolutely NO right trying to interject or correct.
You can't show someone sympathy for not knowing something, and trying to correct someone that does.
It's using opinions as facts. Am I coming off as rude, or aggressive? Probably. Is it warranted? Absolutely. People need to understand that they can't just interject into something they know nothing about.
@@Saimeren damn someone needs some sleep lmao

One of the main reasons I love Safiya's channel is because of the detail, history, and depth her videos always have! Keep doin' what you’re doin'!!

As an archaeologist, it makes me really happy to see all of the research and effort you put in when making this video. It is rare to see a you tuber now a days who is willing to go to such an extent to be factual, especially in regards to history and the deep past! You also made a topic I had never thought to be interesting fascinating! Love your videos, the quality is always so high!
I love how her choker changes when she talks about a different time period. Nice touch 👌🏻
You should do a lot more history vids. I LOVE HISTORY!
you should make this a series. Like it would be about the history of a fashion item or a makeup item

I love how in depth she goes about stuff people have always thought about but never spent time to research, she does good research and it articulate and interesting about it. Love ya Safiya!

FUN FACT: Shah Jahan never actually saw the finished project of the Taj Mahal because his son locked him in dungeon for the rest of his life. He also had plans to build a black version opposite of it for his grave, but like I said he was locked up for the last 8 years of his life. Let's just say I feel very bad for him
Little Owl that would have been cool
that's actually not true, Shah Jahan never had intentions to build a "Black Taj." There's no concrete evidence that backs that up. What was more probable was the intention for it to be a water garden, given the architectural features that are still observable today. Instead of another physical building on the other side of the river, the giant pool of water from the water garden would have reflected the Taj under the moon light creating the opposite version of the mausoleum
Noice👌👌
Well the dude did rob his country when building the Taj Mahal. They had good reasons to lock him up.
happy late realization learned that in grade 3

"I don't know for sure, but I don't think that's why."

I blame the BDSM move on the casual name change "dog collar"
And that's why I wasn't allowed to wear them
seriously though, some of them look so cute but because of that I just won't wear them
NESova.RAR yeah i don’t blame you, it’s a shame disgusting people have to ruin pretty things. But yeah of course now that the whole stigma is around it, it’s not really worth it.
@@h7pubg no no, I'm all up for the sex appeal of wearing one. But back in the 2000 when they made their comeback, I was between 12-14 and I wasn't allowed to have one during my rocker phase because of the "female dog" subname.

So much effort was put into this video! Its so amazing and informative!
Basically the choker is timeless and we should not listen to the people who think it's a trend that needs to die.
