I had my micro on me one day at a family fishing trip. I dropped my GameBoy micro in the lake. My younger cousin and I proceeded to go into the lake after it. Long story short, we drowned, but The Micro still works. Thanks Nintendo!😀👍

When I was younger, I had lost my GBA SP and was absolutely *devastated.* It was the only game console I had at the time and played the crap out of it. My parents surprised me and managed to get me a replacement for my birthday that year.
... then a few months later, I'm cleaning out my closet and found the GBA I "lost" in the pocket of a hoodie. My parents were not happy, to say the least. I did end up donating that one to a children's hospital, though, so I say that's a net positive.
This happened to me with one of my 3DS games! I had lost it and was convinced it'd been melted in the back of my dad's truck. My mom got me a new copy and then I found the original one face-down on my shelf. ... I didn't mention that to her

I had the OG Purple GBA when I was 6 and I lost it in Connecticut. Unfortunately I never found it and never got a replacement. What's funny about it though to me, is I had interest in both the Wii and DS, however because I was young and thus, I was also stupid, I thought that the Nintendo's Wii, but mostly DS Systems, could NEVER live up to the GBA I had once had, that System was the best! I did not realize until many years later that Nintendo made the GBA as well... Remember how I said I was young and stupid? Well, i'm no longer as young!

Releasing a successor after only 3 years lifespan even though the Gameboy Advance actually was a really big success with selling 80 million units within that short time honestly is a really strange and a bit arrogant move but it worked out for Nintendo the DS sold astronomically. I honestly wasn't aware that the Gameboy Advance lifespan was so short

@@arrow4749 This is the reason why I'm saying that. Sony rushed to release PS5. They didn't had faith on PS4. They thought the planned games like Horizon Forbidden West, Gran Turismo 7 and God of War Ragnarok would flop if PS5 didn't existed.
I don't think Nintendo was really looking at the DS as a successor to the GBA. The current situation at the time was basically in the middle of the cellphone/PDA revolution and with the PSP being announced, I'm sure Nintendo was definitely concerned about this and didn't want to particularly kill off their cash cow, the GBA. The DS just happened to eventually overtake the GBA as Nintendo's main handheld. Once Nintendo saw that the DS was selling like gangbusters they kinda just stopped focusing on the GBA and probably the Gameboy line as a whole. It's not really a foreign concept and they kind of did it with the Switch as well. If the Switch had failed to gain traction, there probably would have been a new dedicated handheld from Nintendo to replace the 3DS but the Switch just kind of worked for Nintendo.
@@wakannnai1 or hell, a new Wii like system, but again, the switch just works... despite drift and bad online. Seriously, it's getting better, and we've found how to fix drift, but fucking hell was it a miracle we got this far.

I started out with an gameboy pocket and it was amazing. Luckily i had an adapter to plug into the wall so i didn't needed batteries.
It brought me so much joy.
Then I got the gameboy advance sp witch is one of the best handhelds i have ever played.
The backwards compatibility together with a strong lineup was amazing.
The integrated battery was an major improvement as well.
I am sometimes sad that i dont have it anymore.

There was actually a 3rd party split cable which allowed you at the same time to recharge the handheld and listen to music via regular headphone jack.

I own a Gameboy Micro and I'm proud to say I use it to this day. It's a fantastic portable game device for all GBA purposes.

Thimble _ The New 2DS XL is a variant of the 3DS, although many consider the New 3DS to be its own separate console as there are games that can only play on it.
King Boo it’s the same device with a different design but basically only difference is the 3d which is removed on the 2ds.

The GBA definitely was one of the best handhelds for its time.
I got my hands on a GBA SP back in December, and it's pretty fun.
Well it didn't have any competition so technically it was the best.

@@merceze to my knowledge Sega had no handheld game console that was directly competing with the GBA. Game gear production stopped in 97 while the nomad was 99. On nec side the PC engine gt stopped production in 94.
You might consider the wonderswan color as a contemporary of the GBA as it launched only a year prior but it never left Japan domestic market. The neo Geo pocket color was competing with GBC and died when the GBA launched.

I was in my late teens in 2001, and this video really nailed what the Nintendo handheld market was like. So much good stuff, the GBA hardware and software lineup was an endless supply of hits. I was so upset with the DS announcement, I wanted them to keep pumping out GBA games, but it turned out to be really good as well

Sooo many memories on this thing! The Sonic Advance Quartet and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories and the Fire emblem games...man, this was the stuff!! Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Fusion, and Mario Vs. Donkey Kong were late-bloomers that wound up being some of my favorites!!
The Gameboy Advance SP Pearl Blue (101) was my first video game console. I got it when I was around six, and I still cherish it more than fifteen years later.
It was mine too. Mone broke in 2014, didn't find a new one until 2020, and it broke earlier this year. Finally replaced it with a Pearl Pink one that will stay safe in its carry case.

my experience with the hamtaro series is accidentally managing to buy a japanese copy of one of the games and gamestop and having to return it since, well, I was like 8 and couldn't read japanese.

This video is how I found Scott the woz and I’ve rewatched it so many times now
I remember installing an "afterburner" backlight to my og gba. Combined with a rechargeable battery pack essentially fixed all its flaws. I was the only one who could play in the dark. That modded beauty was the paradigm of handhelds for me.

I still have my pink gameboy advance SP from when I was very, very young; it’s well outlived my original DS that ended it’s life in two sad, sad pieces. I still power it up for a few happy hours of Spyro or sonic at a time and it punches me right back to when I was like, 7 and spent my early Saturday mornings glued to it

A part of me wishes I had kept all my handhelds, I was a very generous kid so I always gifted my old gameboys to friends who couldn’t afford them when I got the upgraded version until the DS lite that could play GBA games (which I have and still pull out to play on occasion!) By a stroke of luck my sister still had hers so I do have a Gameboy Color and original Advanced, but the SP only lives on as a vague memory in my mind.
I just got back into playing Game Boy after a long time of like, not playing it. I have a Game Boy Color (Pokemon Gold themed) that I'd love to play but I need a worm light for....
And I have my GBA SP 101. It's not my GBA from when I was a kid, that got stolen years ago. But someone gave me one. It was scratched up and well-used. I ended up buying a new Zelda themed shell for it and doing a nice alcohol clean of the buttons. Thing works like new, and looks like it. I love it.
I ended up also buying a couple flash carts. The EZ Flash Omega for GBA games, and the EZ Flash Junior for Game Boy and Game Boy Color games. They're great. They let you put roms onto an SD card, and play the roms as real games on a real console. They all work, play, and save just like the real thing. I've spent about $130 on my GBA (that I got for free, mind you) at this point, and I don't regret it one bit. Though I still gotta spend $20-25 on a new 900mAh battery, and I gotta find one of those headphone adaptors.
I'm currently playing through Pokemon Crystal, and Castlevania Circle of the Moon, along with a mix of Pokemon Pinball 1 and 2.
There are either replace shells, or projects where you can use just one half to make a superior GBA.
The hinges of the OG DS were horrid. The ones on mine are horribly cracked so it's in retirement to avoid more damage.

Meanwhile I'm a fully grown ass adult carrying around a gold Zelda themed SP, whipping it out in public to play some Pokemon Pinball.

I remember as a 9 year old kid hearing about the launch of the gameboy advance micro. I was so excited about it, that I saved up my allowance and birthday money and Christmas money for a whole year to get one. Memories.

Aside from Oracle of Ages & Seasons, I was in no rush to upgrade from Pocket to Advance. The Colour was just what I already had, but in color. Okay I half lie, it was pretty downing to see my classmates play the Oracle games and Pokémon Crystal while I had to settle with Link's Awakening and Silver, but that said I loved my Pocket and then some until I first laid eyes on the Advance. I can't recall a system since that has made me fall in love faster purely by its design. Sure, it had great games, but it also stuck out by being oval and having the screen centered, plus that unforgetable legendary bootup screen. My grandma called my mom that christmas to ask if I wanted a pet bird like my siblings had, or a GameBoy Advance. Easiest decision in my life, it took me 0.1 second to answer.
The sprites on GBA games are so satisfying. Just the right amount of fidelity while still being chonky.
GBA sp with the shoulder buttons for the original GBA would be true perfection
Yep list my sp cause the shoulder buttons broke from too much metroid, same fate for my ds lite
I still feel the original was more comfortable for larger hands but the clam-shell design was undeniably better and more durable.

I have fond memories for a sweet period in 2019 where I took my gameboy advance to college. I would play super circuit on the train there and back. I would connect it to my animal crossing that morning so I would just be making designs all day. Man, I love my GBA.

I remember the SP. My grandparrents got me one as a birthday present. It was the platinum grey model and my grand dad engraved my name on it so it couldn't get stolen. I ended up trading it in at gamestop so that i could buy the DS lite when it came out.

I remember having an advance sp, and I remember the screen being pretty bright, even under pretty dim conditions, so it was very likely the 101 model, which makes me sad to this day when my parents threw it away... :(

@@BlueSatoshi No, the 3D models for DKC were far too high quality for use in the show. It would have made production costs very high as they would need large computers and dozens of hours to render everything. For the game they only needed to render the sprites used and there weren't that many as DKC is not very story oriented. The show needs a lot more animations as well as expressions.
