  • In this episode of “Conversations with Coach,” Bob Stoops is joined by current USC assistant coach Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury has been widely regarded as an offensive mind from his times working as an assistant at Texas A&M, head coach at Texas Tech and most recently the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
Has anyone been around as much college quarterback talent as Kliff Kingsbury? Patrick Mahomes, Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, Johnny Manziel, Caleb Williams and Case Keenum is beyond a star-studded cast of elite college football QBs. Kingsbury also explains what separates these special talents, what makes them so great and the “eerily similar” aspects of Patrick Mahomes and Caleb Williams’ style.
This weekend the Red Raiders will take on the Houston Cougars, but there is more to that afternoon than just the big game. On Saturday, Texas Tech will be honoring and inducting both Kliff Kingsbury and Mike Leach into their school’s football ring of honor. Coach Stoops and Coach Kingsbury then share some fun stories about Mike Leach, his approach to offense, how his air raid/spread attack is still influencing countless offensive attacks across all levels of football, how the Sooners once had to travel back to Norman from Lubbock in a school bus and the offensive onslaught and fireworks from 2016 when Kingsbury, Mahomes and the Red Raiders took on Stoops, Mayfield and the Sooners in a classic 66-59 shootout.
Kingsbury later in the conversation discusses backing up Tom Brady on the 2003 Super Bowl champion New England Patriots and learning from Brady and Bill Belichick. Kingsbury explains the biggest differences between the college and pro game in the most recent edition of Conversations with Coach.

Bob is so modest. He hired Leach and allowed him to run that offense. He spawned all these changes in offense and back then...defense.
I remember the national championship game where all the analysts were saying: "Oklahoma defense had never seen the speed they will see with Florida State!"
The OU D looked like velocoraptors attacking the FS receivers. OU 13-FS 2
Best, most decent college coach of my life time...and we are the same age!
Good luck with every thing you do coach.

That's probably the first interview of Kliff I've ever listened to. It was great to hear the more personal side of him. I knew he was an offensive wizard, but he comes across as a down-to-earth guy. I guess I always assumed he might be a bit more arrogant, be he seemed surprisingly humble. Maybe I assumed the worst because I was pissed that Texas tech beat us in '99 when he was QB. While the overall W/L numbers aren't the greatest, you can't argue with the offense he's coached and they players that grew under him.

Given the snake weak move Riley made, taking a job and heading g out before even a heads up, sneaking out, the fact bob can stay cordial regarding SC and Riley is amazing. Not to mention SC had to have been tampering prior to anything going public. Enjoy California while it crumbles Lincoln. Bet that soon as he gets an nfl chance he will dishonestly skip out on sc as well.

  • @goingoneight

I appreciate Bob keeping peace with SC after what happened with Riley. That’s probably not easy given he rebuilt and sustained OU for so long before Riley tanked the program and bailed.
He’s mentioned Riley many times over the last year and has never said anything derogatory. Manages to accept it at face value and wish the best for all parties involved. Not very many guys have that kind of forgiveness in their heart and mind.

Why? I enjoyed the interview. I don't understand why some fans are bitter about Riley leaving. Riley did us an enormous favor and deserves some gratitude. I knew it then and I've been proven right already. Last year's growing pains were unfortunately necessary, but the turnaround is happening now and we'll be ready for the SEC. We would have been an also-ran in the SEC with Riley. Why do you think Riley left? Because USC has been such a juggernaut of late? Lol
No, Riley's not completely stupid. The ass beatings from LSU and Alabama and Clemson weren't coincidental. While Riley doesn't believe in the importance of defense or strength & conditioning, he's smart enough to know he can't compete with those who do. They can't even beat Utah, and they still have to face Oregon and UW. They're going to lose 2-3 regular season games. Who would you rather have as OUr head coach, Riley or Venables? We upgraded, big time.
      I rest my case.
