      Contractors are now working on blasting away the landscape between the communications station at Grindavík and Nesvegur. The area is also working on building berms to protect the settlement to the west.
      In recent days, holes have been drilled into a large rock to create a notch for a possible lava flow to the sea. Parts of the notch have been blown away. Before the Easter festival begins, the idea is to carry out a large explosion in the area, thereby releasing about 5,000 cubic metres of rock from the planned lava channel. During the operation explosives in the magnitude of metric tones have been used.

    Thank you Shawn for taking the time on your holiday to give us a factual, and calm update. You Tubers in general tend to inflate the event and create "disaster" headlines that also tend to use older images from the opening phase of this event or some of the earlier ones. I've been checking in regularly on the web cams and quit looking at pretty well all other Icelandic volcano videos unless they are by one of the Icelandic geologists. It's so good to have a steady, reliable source. By the way i am slowly working my way through your road cut geology videos, keep them coming.

      The web cams are frustrating though since they are so wide angle and one only gets to see a half dozen pixels moving aound at the real point of interest. I get suspicious when data is easily available and yet isn't made easily available. There was one of Porbjorn which showed a nice view of the western berm, and for no reason it suddenly became yet another cam pointed at the bubbling cones. In all things, it is often what you don't see that really matters here.

    It’s very interesting that they’re blasting a channel to guide future lava flows. While you’ve been gone, I saw a drone video showing a heavy equipment operator moving earth, in a blizzard with horizontal snow coming from the south or SE, and on the other side (NNW?) of the berm was the giant steaming lava lobe. Truly fire and ice, with a brave person continuing to work nonstop in between. Thanks for the update! Hope you can avoid travel hassles from the wild weather in the USA, Minnesota has had a ton of snow.

    • @robertslugg8361
      @robertslugg8361 개월 전

      Oh no, they are doing the trench I suggested in November to divert the lava to the sea. Ironically, the quarry was more beneficial by diverting the flow to the west rather than allowing it to continue the previous course right the point in the berm.

    I'd always recommend to take a mouse with you. There are also applications to remotely control your pc, so you might be able to use something like that in the future to get access to your normal setup.
    Though, for a quick update during your vacation it's not necessary to do that at all. I just wanted to make you aware of the possibility, but it's completely up to you to decide what to do with this information :-)

  • @StevenStyczinski-sy8cj

    Hi Shawn; I really enjoy your commentary. Using Explosives and excavating a path for the lava goes along with my old philosophy of “if you don’t give it a place to go, it will go where you don’t want it to”!

    I've been eagerly awaiting your latest update because there's been a real dearth of information (for those of us who don't know where to look or interpret what we're seeing), all the while keeping in mind that you would give an update when the time warranted, and you've been missed. Thank you so much for this video that speaks to how this volcanic activity has changed a bit in its nature.
    At the same time I hope your vacation has given you a much needed break from some of the crazy hours you've put in keeping all of us here in the know. Your work is very much appreciated and a rest is well-deserved. Thanks for everything you and your team have done for us in bringing together so much information that helps us make sense of what is going on on the Rekjanes peninsula.

    Could only be ebbing, as finds it's way through recent earthquake fissures.
    But I have a feeling not done. Interesting, to see new layers of ground building, I wonder how the bext one will display, should this settle down.
    It may even pop uo through Grindavik, as the flow heads to the sea 🤔💯👏😊

    Thanks for the update Shawn. There's no need to apologise for not posting while you're on vacation.
    As you were talking about the calculations of the height of the cones, there was a plume that I timed at almost exactly 3s to fall, which is about 45m. That plume was at least twice the height of the cone, so I think those figures were a tad high.
    In case you don't know, you can step a frame at a time in KRplus using the comma and period keys ( < and >, although you don't press shift). This lets you get an accurate timing if you know how many frames per second the video uses. You can assess that using the timers on the video (start counting frames as soon as a new second ticks over, and count until the next second. Most videos are 25 or 30 fps. This video is 30 fps.
