Re: the "neither male nor female" question.
First my credentials: I'm non-binary, and while I was born in Germany, I lived in France for about 13 years, so I'm fluent in French, though it's a bit rusty since I moved back to Germany. Also, I'm doing my best to explain it as well as I can for those who don't speak French.
There is no formally accepted gender neutral pronoun. As far as the acadรฉmie franรงaise is concerned, there is only male and female. However, what Ben said about the gender binary is true, and so we've invented ways to refer to people in a gender neutral way.
There is no "they/them" pronoun in French, but we do use neopronouns. The most common one is "iel", which is a combination of "il" (he) and "elle" (she). There are other ones, such as ael, ol, ille, but they're less common. "iel" is the most widely accepted one. Actually, Twitter has started incorporating "iel" into its French site recently, instead of writing "il/elle".
Now, in French, every adjective and some verbs have a different ending depending on the gender of the noun, and again, traditionally, there's only male and female endings. Let's take an easy example: the adjective "petit", meaning small or young. The male form is "petit", the female form is "petite". What we do is just kinda mashing both forms together, and separating the male and female endings with a dot. So we would write "petit.e" instead of "petit/petite". This only really works in writing, though. When speaking, personally, I use the male form to refer to myself, because it's considered "less gendered" than the female form, if that makes sense? So when speaking, I'd say "quand j'รฉtais petit" (when I was younger), but in writing I'd use "quand j'รฉtais petit.e".
/** Side note: the male form is considered gender neutral in a way because the male plural form of an adjective is used as an all encompassing plural form. For example, when there's a group with only men, you'd say "Ils sont petits". (They're small/short). When it's a group with only women, you'd say "Elles sont petites" (They're small/short). However, when there's both men and women, even when there's more women then men (even when there's only one man and the others are women), you always default to the male form and male plural pronoun. This is something that some of us try to avoid, though, and for a group with mixed genders, we started using the pronoun "iels" (a combination of "ils" and "elles") and the gender neutral form of the adjective. **/
This can get a bit clunky with longer adjectives, for example "heureux", which means happy. The male form is "heureux", and the female form is "heureuse", so the mashed together gender neutral form would be "heureux.se".
But we don't have anything else at the moment and probably never will.
Also, what I and a lot of other non-binary people tend to do is avoid using gendered language altogether. There are adjectives, for example, where the male and female form is the same. "jeune", for example, which means young. So, instead of saying "quand j'รฉtais petit.e", I'll favor "quand j'รฉtais jeune" because it flows better. This isn't always possible though, and requires a lot of mental gymnastics at times.
So yeah, that was your short lesson on using gender neutral language in gendered langauges.
Thank you for this, it is incredibly informative and interesting!
Fascinating! As an enby learning French as a second language, I'm very interested in this development. How would "iel" be pronounced?
I tend to smush all the genders together so I might refer to myself as feminine in one sentence and masculine in the next. My Hebrew is even more fun -- my self-referential verbs and adjectives might not match gender in Hebrew, and although I'm sure native speakers are cringing it's completely on purpose.
SlightlySingedAngel you would pronounce it i-รจl
Wow this is so cool!! You guys have totally modernised and adapted your language to accurately describe your experience, meanwhile some English speakers struggle with using "they" as a singular (even though it's been used that way since Shakespeare!!) ๐ Thanks for sharing :))
It's fascinating how every single sentence of yours could be applied if speaking about Portuguese (and Spanish as well). Even down to the ungendered "jeune" (= jovem). I didn't even think of these rare words we have where gender isn't implied!
Just shows how latin languages follow all these same principles that are very hard to adapt to a new increasingly less binary world.

Ben's French statements had me cracking up all video
Fun fact for everyone out there:
The phrase 'Oh Lร Lร ' is not how you express the beauty of something. In fact, it is an expression of concern. It literally translates to 'Oh dear'
Knowing that makes the scene even funnier cause of the messiness of the nails, they could, for sure, be going "yikesss"
Wait, now I wanna know how ooh lala became a good thing, because there's got to be some funny story out there about it
Yes this! And in France at least (idk about Canada) it's often just shortened to "oh la" and is often used to mean anything varying from "wow" to "yikes" or "uh oh"
@@beatm6948 I have no clue, but I'm going to assume that a non-Francophone saw someone say "oh la la" at something surprising/shocking that happened to be positive, and assumed that it was an expression of being pleased rather than concerned. Same thing as saying "voila" to mean "ta da, be impressed". While it is occasionally used that way, in general it just means "there it is" or "there you go". The word "voila" literally translates to "look there". Like if someone asks "where is Paul" you'd point at Paul and say "voila Paul". But it doesn't imply that you're a magician who has pulled Paul out of a hat, declaring vOiLa PaUL with a majestic flourish lol.

when menchie got up on benโs shoulders ๐๐ shes so adorable and ur relationship with ur cats is so wholesome ๐ฅฐ
Ben's french had me crying, his accent is so funny. Cristine's french is really good though, she's definitely bilingual.
I donโt think thatโs bilingual but sheโs fairly good at it. If she were to practice more Iโm sure sheโll become fluent
Kemit The Frog I donโt think you have to be fluent in the language to be bilingual like Iโm not fluent in Spanish and my mom is not fluent in English and Iโm ranting so just ignore me
exactly you donโt have to be fluent to be bilingual
@@kemitthefrog8390 I agree, if she practiced more she would be able to conjugate better and would know whether a noun is masculine or feminine. However I know people who consider themselves bilingual and they're doing a lot worse than Cristine ๐

Cristine: why do objects have genders in French?
Spanish speakers: is it โla sartรฉnโ o โel sartรฉnโ?
Every thing is gendered in the Latin languages
@@theresachacon1122 I had an American English teacher that use to ask the class how to gender words in English because it sounded funny to him. I'm Brazilian BTW.
Same with polish, and, I believe-every slovakian language
Omg I learn Spanish and sometimes I'm so confused with the "la or el" ๐ญ
Annie Phanaphet my parents both speak spanish and i know it so well that it isnโt even a second language, itโs on par with my english and i make the same mistake ๐๐

Duuddee, caliss que c'est drole!
Oui ๐
Florane Bolduc HAAHAHAH GOTTA GO FAST
I'm from France and been living in the US for a long time now, love to see you try to speak French.
As an Italian studying French, I can say there's the same problem with Italian. Italian, French, Spanish, etc... Come from Latin (and a bit of Greek) so in many of the languages that come from latin a word (even if it's an inanimated object, like chair) has to be either a male or a female. In Italy, for example, we say "sedia, nome femminile singolare"(= chair, feminine and singular name).
Sorry if my English wasn't the best but I hope this comment was helpful. :D

Your English is very good! Thanks for that explanation. :-)

I like how Cristine struggled to find a male word while I immediately had "problรจme" in mind bc I learned French as a third language and one of the only things I remember is my teacher saying "Problems are always male" xD
My Italian teacher said the same thing! Since 'problema' is an irregular word, meaning it's male despite having a female ending.
My French teacher said the same thing to me๐
Same, French and Spanish
My mandarin teacher said the same thing since ็ท (male) and้พ (difficult) are pronounced the same way
Le chat is male. They have two cats.
Can we just appreciate how pretty she looks๐๐ญ๐ญ
Cristine actually sounds very nice in french when you say it with the right accent
