This video is my life on film. Growing up in Philadelphia at EXACTLY this time, I was in 9th grade when we got Doctor J from the Nets. No words can describe the disbelief and JOY that HE was coming to PHILLY to play for the Sixers. All my roots as a complete "basketball lunatic" started with Julius Winfield Erving II arriving in town to join the Sixers. We bought tickets in the rafters of ths Spectrum and swooned while Doc "operated". For the entirety of his career in Philadelphia, we swelled with pride because WE had Doc.
When Dr. J left the game, I lost my interest in basketball. Hell it was all good till then...Heck I still wear converses....Happy to say I met him and still feel the same as I did them....Thank you Mr DOC J FOR THAT YOU GAVE TO ALL OF US..........JRC
His leaping ability, those long arms and huge hands, the full extension of his arm above his head with his hand gripping the ball like it was an egg, then the snapping down of the dunk at full force made it unstoppable. He was style, magic, creativity, power and athletic brilliance in one package. Off the court, a man of intelligence, articulate in his speaking ability, and all class.
My father worked for the NETS in the front office, and this man NEVER left until EVERY autograph was signed, and that all of his sneakers and socks of that day were given away. I personally still have 8 pairs of game used sneakers, but have no idea from what games. But I'll give you a GREAT story about THE DOC, this man would drive a Rolls Royce, and he would start his car and warm it up. But, while he did that, he signed EVERY single autograph and I can tell you this, one time it was 22 BELOW and about 30 kids were waiting for him. He didn't even have a coat on and he still signed every signature until every kid was happy. THIS WAS NIGHTLY, and THIS, is who DR. J TRULY IS... THAT'S WHY HE IS CLASS, AND THE ONLY PERSON CLOSE TO HIM WAS WALTER PAYTON....BUT JULIUS ERVING IS STILL THE KING.

I’m 59 years old from East St Louis and Chicago. Doctor J was and still is my favorite basketball player of all time. No one had seen anything like him on a basketball ball court. He started the isolation game. They use to take 4 guys to the other side of the court and you had to follow your player to the other side. He would then take his man to the hoop and dunk on him. If the Center rotated to protect the rim he would dunk on him to. He could not be stopped going to the rim, he started hang time, floating, and gliding. I was 16 and played basketball in high school. I spent hours on the court learning how to reverse layup , gliding, hanging one hand finger rolls. Later on I worked as a cook at the Rivera Hotel and he use to bring his family and kids there every year from 1977 to 1983 during our Hall of fame golf tournaments. I have pictures with him, I cut his prime ribs, fed his wife and kids. I shook his hands, and his fingers could go to the middle of my forearm. He was always nice and classy with everyone. DR. J and Ali will always be my sports heroes.
Yeah he had the 3 things which made his game incredible were his vertical jump, his hang time, and his huge hands. I wish I was old enough to see him play in game... I was lucky enough to see Jordan play but not Dr. J ... the reason we have the goat Jordan ... i’m sure Jordan would not be the same player he became without Dr. J

His finger tips went up to my forearms. You are correct just like DR J got his game from Elgin Baylor, Jordan got his game from DR J and made it better.

I’m 53 and Dr. J is simply one of my favorite humans. Ever. He means so much to so many. We would do well to heed his example. I know I sure have a lot to learn from this incredible man. (I was fortunate enough to briefly thank him when I played drums for an NBA off season event in Orlando which he attended. He was as gracious and kind as you would expect. I have loved sports for over 50 yes. Julius Erving was and is my favorite basketball player/person my whole life. I consider it an honor and a blessing to have been around from the beginning of his career until he retired. And I have to mention that I begged my father for yes to take me see him play. Finally on Dr J's birthday we went. He scored 56pts. Incredible.
Julius Erving is and always has been class personified! He's not an athlete he's an artist!!! His game inspired kids like me to be better than what we were, because we all knew there was only gonna be one DR J!
Watching him and Gervin play was spectacular. The doctor was in session evaluating the frozen one. The “iceman” George Gervin and The doctor are forever legends.
I'm 54 years old and a former division 1 player back in the day. I know we've had the Bird/Magic era, the MJ, Kobe and now Lebron era, but I can't explain in words how amazing and special it was to finally see Dr. J during the ABA merger. He was doing things we had never seen before, especially in the air. He revitalized the interest in the league from 76 thru 81. Everyone wanted to be Dr. J. He changed the game.
I am 62 when I was growing up I think of three players that started doing things that hadn't been done before, Earl the pearl Monroe, pistol Pete maravitch and the most impressive Dr j ! Dr j did some of the great dunks before Jordan !

The greatest thing about Mr. Erving is how humble he is. He's just the person he is and that's all he is to himself regardless of who or what he is to anyone and everyone else.

Bird and Magic might have saved the nba, but the Doctor kept it floating long enough for them to let it shine. 1983 Philadelphia 76ers, the pinnacle of a legend. Thank you Doctor J, Magic, and Larry Legend for making me love basketball as a young kid. I mean it, thank you!!!!
Dr J has lived a public life in the right way. He is pure class. I was fortunate to see him play decades ago while he was at UMass. I lived in Maine and saw him play there. I think he went 14 for 14 , or something like that. He couldn't dunk because of the NCAA rule at the time, so he simply jumped over everyone and finger-rolled, or floated, or banked the ball in time after time. From then on I was a huge fan of his style and his character, even when the Sixers bullied my Celtics. Wonderful memories of his game and career!
Hats off to the man who saved professional basketball. A great athlete , the ambassador of basketball, and a real gentleman. May health and happiness follow him for the rest of his life.

So, while Larry and Magic actually played with him (jealous!) it was actually Jordan who people looked up to because he was the Dr J that nobody ever saw. Did everything the Dr did; up and under the rim shots, even the foul line dunk! His idol... Ironically, MJ had a son who also died in a car accident and had a brother who got sick and died. Though it never took him 7 seasons to win a championship, it did take him a few years to do so. So there was no saving the NBA the Dr. paved the way!!
I remember I was 8 yrs old when my Dad took me to see The Doctor when he played for the Nets. It's the only professional basketball game I've ever seen and I had no idea why my Dad took me. So I asked him. He told me that he wanted me to be able to see the best player that ever played the game of basketball. Now he's taken me to plenty of NFL games. Mainly Baltimore Colts and NY Giants but that ABA game just felt different. Thank you Dad for taking me and thank you Dr J for making it so memorable.
This man is inspiring in a way that is even more rare today than it was back then. A professional with humble beginnings who's dignity, class and innate sense of respect was on the level of a revered king. I wish figures like him were the norm in our society today.

It was incredible to see the young DR J about 50 years ago when he first started playing with the Virginia Squares. His high energy, magnetic personality, & skills on the court were something Virginia had never seen.
I was a pharmaceutical sales person for a company Wesrwood/Bristol Myers Squib, in a convention. THE DR. WAS THERE,promoting his products. He was my hero in the NBA, and I had a chance to take a 📷picture with him. When I stood next to him, I wanted to pass out . I said hello. And thanked him for this. I still have that picture, and still am in awe!! I hope he remembers 🙏 me. When I take my last breath, and leave this earth to see Jesus, l WILL remember that moment, when my life changed. And then close my eyes with such inchantment, knowing that I'm going to heaven, and that Dr. J SHOOK MY HAND, AND TOOK A PICTURE 📷 WITH ME!!!
Being a long-time Jordan fan I am also an admirer of Dr J, he was and still is a class-act and an all-around gentleman in and out of the courts. He deserved the championship.
Some guy's you just want to root for in life and Dr J was one of them. I remember that Converse commercial from the 70's. I'm 48 and haven't seen that since 77' or whenever it came out but I still new the words before they said them. Weird what packs itself deep in your brain.
I grew up watching the Doc; nothing but class personified. I watched many stars retire, Jordan, and Jeter. But when Doc retired, I cried. Nothing but class.
I was able to fly like the Dr. I'm beginning to realize how special that was. I grew up in the 80s and 90s....mj was my idol. I lived in rural Nova Scotia and never picked up a basketball until I was 12. I was a late bloomer when it comes to dunking. Around my 17th birthday. I trained hard as an athlete. I drove a bike to work for 2 years which I believe was the exercise that was most responsible for my leaping ability. Eventually I realized that it was Julius Erving who inspired MJ. The Dr's impact is far reaching.
I grew up in South Philadelphia in an old Irish neighborhood about 15 blocks from the spectrum and of course grew up watching Dr j from day one as a kid and he was the most magnificent basketball player that ever graced the face of the Earth! His charisma is unmatched, his style unequaled and his spirit in the city of high spirits and brotherly love at that time in the 1970s and early '80s I don't believe will ever be seen again! I remember my father doing Dr J moves on the court. I even remember seeing my Dad being glued to the tv during basketball season; and watching The Doctor do his thing.
My favorite athlete of all time. The Ali of basketball. I met him once after a preseason basketball game in Birmingham Al where he conversated and signed autographs for a mob of people over an hour until everyone was gone. It was just him me and my buddy. I just stood there looking at him like OMG.
I've met him as he raised money for an inner city school in kc years ago. ..I told him I desired to help kids in inner city too...He looked right thru me down to the lamp of my heart, pulled out his business card, said call me, and showed me his heart was even greater than his dunks..God bless this man even now more than he has ever dreamed or hoped or ever asked...
I was born in 1976, and had never seen him play, but even I knew that he was the best player. Back in the days of my first memories of basketball, there were the Harlem Globetrotters and there was Dr. J.
I grew up a few miles away from Erving. I saw many Nets games at the Nassau Coliseum. I saw him at a clinic at Nassau Community College. Erving was a clinic. He was virtually unknown in high school. He was a great player an an inspiration to all. He is ours....from our neighborhood. He's the greatest.

My most significant sports idol growing up! He was eloquent, articulate & cerebral in a manner that most athletes - let alone a black athlete - had never been viewed or perceived. Julius "Dr. J" Erving is one of the MOST significant figures in American Sports history. I can state without hesitation that this man inspired me to personally achieve at a higher level & present myself with class at "every" turn! He might not be considered the ' greatest ' , but in my opinion he was THEE most influential and most entertaining. As a kid growing up in the 70's and start to play basketball ( loved it since day one ) and played in school organized team league too. I went from emulating Kareem's skyhook to Dr J's moves, which was the minute when I first ever saw the doctor played on tv. I was totally glued to the television. Even to this day, there is no one else I'd rather play like than the ' doctor '. Other kids were starting to call me ' mini-Dr J '. lol. Btw, after watching the doctor played for the first time, Kareem moved to the 2nd spot as my favorite player. That was how ' influential ' and ' entertaining ' he was to me then, and now..
There were a lot of great basketball players before the doc came along, but no one had ever done the things he did. He was larger than life. And just so cool about it.

Years ago while still in the Military had the opportunity to play against Dave Thompson, Artis Gilmore and Daryl Walker. Though they were well past their prime it was a most exciting experience. I watched Dr J most of his career. True Legend and Ultimate Ambassador of the game. Those that followed in his path owe so much respect and for the most part have lived up to the hype.
I've seen almost every ABA and NBA player. The Doctor was incredible as a player and a person. So glad they got Moses. They both got their NBA championship together. Thanks Doc!
Growing up in Philly in the 70's and 80's every kid would go to the playground and try and emulate Dr.J. I am fortunate to have gotten to see him play in person on numerous ocassions and each time I left feeling that I just witnessed something special in my lifetime. Dr.J IMO is a top 5 sports personality that transcended sports much like Muhammed Ali, Arthur Ashe, Jesse Owens and Michael Jordan. Thanks for posting the documentary!

I'm 54 years old and a former division 1 player back in the day. I know we've had the Bird/Magic era, the MJ, Kobe and now Lebron era, but I can't explain in words how amazing and special it was to finally see Dr. J during the ABA merger. He was doing things we had never seen before, especially in the air. He revitalized the interest in the league from 76 thru 81. Everyone wanted to be Dr. J. He changed the game.

I am 62 when I was growing up I think of three players that started doing things that hadn't been done before, Earl the pearl Monroe, pistol Pete maravitch and the most impressive Dr j ! Dr j did some of the great dunks before Jordan !

The greatest thing about Mr. Erving is how humble he is. He's just the person he is and that's all he is to himself regardless of who or what he is to anyone and everyone else.
One of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Bird and Magic might have saved the nba, but the Doctor kept it floating long enough for them to let it shine.

Dr J has lived a public life in the right way. He is pure class. I was fortunate to see him play decades ago while he was at UMass. I lived in Maine and saw him play there. I think he went 14 for 14 , or something like that. He couldn't dunk because of the NCAA rule at the time, so he simply jumped over everyone and finger-rolled, or floated, or banked the ball in time after time. From then on I was a huge fan of his style and his character, even when the Sixers bullied my Celtics. Wonderful memories of his game and career!

So, while Larry and Magic actually played with him (jealous!) it was actually Jordan who people looked up to because he was the Dr J that nobody ever saw. Did everything the Dr did; up and under the rim shots, even the foul line dunk! His idol... Ironically, MJ had a son who also died in a car accident and had a brother who got sick and died. Though it never took him 7 seasons to win a championship, it did take him a few years to do so. So there was no saving the NBA the Dr. paved the way!!

I had the pleasure and blessing to watch Doc play for Philly. It’s hard to put in words what he meant to this city.
I remember I was 8 yrs old when my Dad took me to see The Doctor when he played for the Nets. It's the only professional basketball game I've ever seen and I had no idea why my Dad took me. So I asked him. He told me that he wanted me to be able to see the best player that ever played the game of basketball.
Now he's taken me to plenty of NFL games. Mainly Baltimore Colts and NY Giants but that ABA game just felt different.
Thank you Dad for taking me and thank you Dr J for making it so memorable.

This man is inspiring in a way that is even more rare today than it was back then. A professional with humble beginnings who's dignity, class and innate sense of respect was on the level of a revered king. I wish figures like him were the norm in our society today.

It was incredible to see the young DR J about 50 years ago when he first started playing with the Virginia Squares. His high energy, magnetic personality, & skills on the court were something Virginia had never seen.

We used to go watch the Dr when he was in college and you could tell even then that he was destined for greatness.
I was a pharmaceutical sales person for a company Wesrwood/Bristol Myers Squib, in a convention. THE DR. WAS THERE,promoting his products. He was my hero in the NBA, and I had a chance to take a 📷picture with him. When I stood next to him, I wanted to pass out . I said hello. And thanked him for this. I still have that picture, and still am in awe!! I hope he remembers 🙏 me. When I take my last breath, and leave this earth to see Jesus, l WILL remember that moment, when my life changed. And then close my eyes with such inchantment, knowing that I'm going to heaven, and that Dr. J SHOOK MY HAND, AND TOOK A PICTURE 📷 WITH ME!!!
Being a long-time Jordan fan I am also an admirer of Dr J, he was and still is a class-act and an all-around gentleman in and out of the courts. He deserved the championship.
Some guy's you just want to root for in life and Dr J was one of them. I remember that Converse commercial from the 70's. I'm 48 and haven't seen that since 77' or whenever it came out but I still new the words before they said them. Weird what packs itself deep in your brain.

I grew up watching the Doc; nothing but class personified. I watched many stars retire, Jordan, and Jeter. But when Doc retired, I cried. Nothing but class.
I was able to fly like the Dr. I'm beginning to realize how special that was.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s....mj was my idol.
I lived in rural Nova Scotia and never picked up a basketball until I was 12.
I was a late bloomer when it comes to dunking. Around my 17th birthday.
I trained hard as an athlete. I drove a bike to work for 2 years which I believe was the exercise that was most responsible for my leaping ability.
Eventually I realized that it was Julius Erving who inspired MJ.
The Dr's impact is far reaching.

I grew up in South Philadelphia in an old Irish neighborhood about 15 blocks from the spectrum and of course grew up watching Dr j from day one as a kid and he was the most magnificent basketball player that ever graced the face of the Earth! His charisma is unmatched, his style unequaled and his spirit in the city of high spirits and brotherly love at that time in the 1970s and early '80s I don't believe will ever be seen again! Thanks doc you always be king!
I remember my father doing Dr J moves on the court. I even remember seeing my Dad being glued to the tv during basketball season; and watching The Doctor do his thing.

My favorite athlete of all time. The Ali of basketball. I met him once after a preseason basketball game in Birmingham Al where he conversated and signed autographs for a mob of people over an hour until everyone was gone. It was just him me and my buddy. I just stood there looking at him like OMG.
I've met him as he raised money for an inner city school in kc years ago. ..I told him I desired to help kids in inner city too...He looked right thru me down to the lamp of my heart, pulled out his business card, said call me, and showed me his heart was even greater than his dunks..God bless this man even now more than he has ever dreamed or hoped or ever asked...

I was born in 1976, and had never seen him play, but even I knew that he was the best player. Back in the days of my first memories of basketball, there were the Harlem Globetrotters and there was Dr. J.
I wrote a paper on Julius Erving in elementary school. He is one of my favorite players going back to the 70s.
I grew up a few miles away from Erving. I saw many Nets games at the Nassau Coliseum. I saw him at a clinic at Nassau Community College. Erving was a clinic. He was virtually unknown in high school. He was a great player an an inspiration to all. He is ours....from our neighborhood. He's the greatest.

Great ending.. I love the way that was shot.. (What you already know rarely needs to be seen..) The Doc was an EXAMPLE of how to be a man's man, and played the game with tenacity. I don't think he was the greatest player I've ever seen, but he might be the best HUMAN BEING that ever laced 'em up.
My most significant sports idol growing up! He was eloquent, articulate & cerebral in a manner that most athletes - let alone a black athlete - had never been viewed or perceived. Julius "Dr. J" Erving is one of the MOST significant figures in American Sports history. I can state without hesitation that this man inspired me to personally achieve at a higher level & present myself with class at "every" turn! Magic says its best Julies is God's creation of "greatness & class!"

He might not be considered the ' greatest ' , but in my opinion he was THEE most influential and most entertaining. As a kid growing up in the 70's and start to play basketball ( loved it since day one ) and played in school organized team league too. I went from emulating Kareem's skyhook to Dr J's moves, which was the minute when I first ever saw the doctor played on tv. I was totally glued to the television. Even to this day, there is no one else I'd rather play like than the ' doctor '. Other kids were starting to call me ' mini-Dr J '. lol. Btw, after watching the doctor played for the first time, Kareem moved to the 2nd spot as my favorite player. That was how ' influential ' and ' entertaining ' he was to me then, and now..

Years ago while still in the Military had the opportunity to play against Dave Thompson, Artis Gilmore and Daryl Walker. Though they were well past their prime it was a most exciting experience. I watched Dr J most of his career. True Legend and Ultimate Ambassador of the game. Those that followed in his path owe so much respect and for the most part have lived up to the hype.

I'm so happy I got to see the Doctor operate on the court. He was an inspiration to all the young boy coming up in the that era.
Growing up in Philly in the 70's and 80's every kid would go to the playground and try and emulate Dr.J. I am fortunate to have gotten to see him play in person on numerous ocassions and each time I left feeling that I just witnessed something special in my lifetime. Dr.J IMO is a top 5 sports personality that transcended sports much like Muhammed Ali, Arthur Ashe, Jesse Owens and Michael Jordan. Thanks for posting the documentary!
