To help smash up the fuel carbies have air bleeds running to each circuit. This carb has a single main circuit but pretty well all carbs have at least 2, an idle circuit and a main circuit. Running to each of the 'tubes' of each circuit is another tube with a tiny hole mounted at the air horn (intake side). This starts to airate the fuel before it gets to the venturi where it is vaporised further. It stops that droplet effect seen in this video, which increases response, economy and lowers emissions.

For 2 years I passed over this video. Your title should have been "I built my own carburetor with my dad". Loved the interaction with your dad and the home made carb showing how it works was FANTASTIC.

Same here. Then again, right place right time. I’ve been watching a lot of videos about inline 4, inline 6, V6, and boxer engines. At the same time I’ve been working on my wife’s Dodge Grand Caravan (PentaStar engine) that had a major leak coming from the oil cooler. This video came up and I said “right on time” as my interest was peaked with everything I was doing. Awesome vid!

Man I'm a gearhead and have beeb working on engines and carburetors for decades. I had the same working understanding of how they work just like your dad, but to actually see it all in slow motion is some of the coolest stuff I've ever seen. Kuddos to y'all for doing this!
Im surprised some of this seems like new information to him and others, but it's cool how excited he gets about it and the effort put toward creating his vision.
As a professional mechanical engineer, I have to say well done. This video excellent, I would go as far to say it is beautiful. Not only the camera work, but the fact you did this with your father.

Wow! That was just beautiful! Imagine being a Yamaha engineer in 1986 who works on an engine with a carburetor. He sees the blueprints, he knows how it should work but sadly he have never had a chance to see this little gasoline drop being torn into pieces by the airflow! What a pitty so many technologies was not available to these people back then (hi speed cam, 3d printing, computers, internet)! What you recorded was beautiful! Thanks!

The engine will only run as fast as the points (if it has them) will close or the valves start to float (meaning they don't close). And you run the risk of the connecting rod breaking.

You know, I thought what I liked best about Destin and his work was his enthusiasm for the subject matter. But I have come to realize that even more than that it's his love: love for his kids, love for his dad, love for other youtube creators, and love for his audience. I raced outboards across Canada and the USA for 30 years; now my 4 yr old grandson and I are building an acrylic kit I-4 4 stroke engine which reveals all the moving parts. He is absorbing every bit of info that he can see, but the kit does not show the venturi effect within the carb. This wonderful video is going to be my teaching tool for the next generation of family boat racers; the more I watch, the more I learn too, and I've been building racing carbs for decades. My grandson will be miles ahead of me in no time. Thank you!

What a beautiful video this is for so many reasons… from the spectacular super slow motion I could watch for hours to the unbelievable explanation from your father on the 4 stroke vibration in the float bowl (he was right😊) but mostly because of the amazing bond and relationship you have with your father. It bought a tear to my eye on a few occasions. Would be great to see more videos with him in it. The camera likes him!

I probably watch this video on a bimonthly basis. It came out when I first started really tearing my motorcycle apart, and it's such a tremendous example of how exactly carburetors work. Now I'm helping my dad out, taking apart his motorcycle with him and tuning it up.

It actually doesn't really match up though, since it would shake twice per intake pulse since every stroke is half a rotation.

@@agerrgerra1361 It's a single cylinder, so it has a primary and secondary imbalance. The first order is mostly cancelled out by the crank counterweight but the second order happens at the top AND bottom of the stroke and it's from the piston changing linear velocity while the crank's rotational velocity doesn't.
TLDR: Dad's four-count is valid, albeit counterintuitive.

I think the best part of this video was the seeming you bond with your dad, I don't have the best relationship with my father but this warmed my heart. Its difficult sometimes to understand them because they grew up in different times but regardless I love my dad.
Watching your dad is priceless. He's from the generation of mechanical stuff, and Destin grew up in the world of computers and electronics. The two of you are a wonderful way to understand how our lives have been changed. Watch out for that "Fanger".

This video is amazing. I have very little understanding of mechanical parts. Heck I'm an electrician, trying to rebuild a dirt bike at home. This video really helps me understand how this part operates. The visual understanding of it has increased so much more than any other explanation videos.

When I was 16 my parents car was having carburetor issues. Engine was a ford 390 with a Rochester Quadrajet four barrel carb. So I went down to the auto parts store and bought the carburetor rebuild kit for it and proceeded to rebuild the carb. My dad came home from work at noon for lunch and saw the carburetor spread all over the garage floor as I had disassembled it for cleaning and replacement of the various parts. His comment was “You know you have to have that put back together and running to go pick your mom up from work don’t you?”. I said “Yes I know.” And I had it all back together, on the engine and adjusted in time to pick her up. I learned later that this particular type of carburetor was one of the most difficult to work on. 😉

This video helped me understand the functioning of small engines better than anything else. Anyone can explain the principle of 4 stroke and even 2 stroke, but carbs have always been magic to me.

The look of concern on his dad's face when he suggested just letting it run as fast as possible was great! In truth it never even occurred to me that, without some extra equipment, an engine is liable to run itself fast enough to tear itself to pieces.

Yup... The ease in which you can disable a Governor on a little Briggsy is part of what leads to so many being reduced to junk in the hands of amateur mechanics...
On most small-engines, the governor is inside the engine, but there's a control arm that sticks out of the block, and right up near the carburetor. If you start the engine, and pull the throttle to full-speed, you'll hear the engine do a series of subtle rev up and downs instead of a constant perfect hum... It's more pronounced on older ones with a little wear. If you look close at the throttle valve (the one closest to the engine) there's a little piece of wire that keeps adjusting it down so it can't "runaway" beyond a pre-set number of RPM's.
The actual throttle control that YOU get to play with (as an operator) is supposed to attach by SPRING and just adds resistance against the governor. This prevents operators from "Over-running" their engines destructively.
Kids with go-carts quickly figure out that you can disable that governor by just removing that little piece of wire... AND so long as the engine is under a load (racing with a kid or two in the cart) you can get considerably more power out of it without blowing up... BUT it wears the engine out prematurely... USUALLY by throwing the piston rod through the side of the engine block...
In automotive engines, there are various ways they govern the "top end" so the internal parts (particularly fly-wheel and crankshaft) won't rip themselves apart, but the actual bits and formats are just too numerous for a simple YT Comment post... The little B & S engines make it SO much simpler to look for and watch as it works... ;o)

Runaway engines are certainly a thing.. however there are other factors that'll limit ones speed, like valves floating.
@@Yamashiro-pai most small engines have a kill switch that stops the spark plugs from sparking. The carb isn't usually used to kill the motor.
Besides the carburetor, Dad definitely raised you up really good. We can see a true loving relationship between Dad and Son. Envy that. In a good way.
