  • WAR, or Wins Above Replacement, tells us how valuable a player has really been in helping his team win. The top of the WAR leaderboards is filled with MVP and Cy Young candidates, but at the top of the list this season is a surprising name: Ha-Seong Kim. In this video, we take a deep dive into Ha-Seong Kim's true talent and how it can be measured using two popular statistics: bWAR and fWAR. Using Ha-Seong Kim's performance as an example, we'll explore the differences between these two statistics and how they can provide different insights into a player's performance. Whether you're a baseball fan or just interested in statistics, this video is a must-watch for anyone looking to understand how player value is measured in the MLB.

    Another underrated stat. As a leadoff hitter for the Padres, he has OBP of .400. AND he leads the league in pitches seen per plate appearance, allowing guys hitting behind him to see what the pitcher's got. An amazingly intelligent player with high baseball IQ

      .374 OBP right now, 18th in MLB. You'd love that from any player, let alone your leadoff. The pitches per plate appearance is such an underrated thing, great point!

      @@SmartrBaseball that is his overall obp. He was mentioning his splits when he is a leadoff hitter which is.429 OBP and 175 wrC+. He started the year batting mostly towards the back of the lineup. Melvin sticks him in 1st at all times now because of how well he has been playing (disregarding righty/righty matchups).

    Name another play who plays + defense at 2B, SS and 3B? He has proven that he can play gold glove calibre defence at each of these positions.
    The only other player who comes close, unless I am missing someone, is Santiago Espinal of the Jays. Kim has been incredible valuable as a defender and was a huge stabilizing force when Tatis was gone last year. His base running has always been above average but I’m so thrilled to see him reach that next level with his bat. Love this player.
    Also, anyone else remember his handshake from last year with Profar? It was the coolest I have seen, haha. He’s a lot of fun on the bench but also just such a gamer and so consistent. Hugely underrated!

      He’s actually wrong on how they value hitters. Both use wRAA that is park adjusted. BR does not use ops+ and fangraphs does not use wRC+ because these are rate stats and you need a counting stat to see how many runs they contribute. Otherwise a 120 wRC+ with 50 PA is equivalent to a 120 wRC+ with 600 PA and this is not true

    Great explanation, subbed! Would it make sense, I wonder, to favor B WAR for the current season, MVP voting, etc, and F WAR for predicting the next season? The latter seems more abstract and predictive while the former is just more saying "here is what happened this season".

    Def like to see a vid about Pitchers. 2 things really like to see included are 1) 2-3 different categories of P, SP, LHB splits matchup specialists, high leverage late innings SIRP & CL, and maybe multi innings RP like MR & LR, and specific values & potential impact on game (like on avg say SP impact is over roughly 6 innings & much larger amount of IP, while a CL impact is extremely compressed into under 1 IP to 1⅓ IP usually & sharp divide between a W & a L/blown save over a usually low amount of pitches thrown, making the value {hopefully takes how high & low of leverage situations, quality of hitters & field into an adjusted scale & value) of each successful & unsuccessful + & - P value/impact pretty high). 2) some sort of relevant values for spin rates, avg velocity, quality of stuff, command & control, value of P combos against similar combo at MLB avg, and success of P combos Vs all types across MLB on avg

    • @SmartrBaseball
      @SmartrBaseball  8 개월 전 +1

      I wish there was a stat sophisticated enough for all that, we just don't have it yet for baseball. Fangraphs has a splits leader board tool that's great for looking at how guys do in those matchups/situations, I'd check that out to find out about your first point. For the second there's stuff+, location+, pitch+ etc to see how good someone's stuff and command is relative to the league (also on fangraphs). If you need links let me know. I hope one day we have a true all in one stat that puts everything together.

    I'll just say that Kim is having a great season. His defense has always been great but I didn't think his offense would improve as much as it has. The man works hard on his game. Is he as good as Acuna. No way. But he is a much better shortstop than the Padres current guy Bogaerts. By far.

    • @SmartrBaseball
      @SmartrBaseball  8 개월 전 +1

      You're absolutely correct he's the WAR leader, they just didnt plan for a player like Ohtani with these stats. Since he DHs when he doesn't pitch he's not playing defense, so you have to add his position player and pitching WAR together.
      Fwar 5.9 from hitting and 2.1 from pitching, 8 total (Acuna 5.9 also top hitter, Wheeler 4.3 top pitcher).
      Bwar 5.5 from hitting, 3.3 from pitching, 8.8 total (Kim/Acuna 5.6 top hitters, Cole 4.9 top pitcher)
