Behold Dune: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and More
Feuding royals. A deadly planet. Before Star Wars or Game of Thrones, there was Frank Herbert’s legendary sci-fi novel. Vanity Fairs preview of Denis Villeneuve’s new movie.
In the new film adaptation, directed by Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, Chalamet stars as the young royal Paul Atreides, the proverbial stranger in a very strange land, who’s fighting to protect this hostile new home even as it threatens to destroy him. Humans are the aliens on Arrakis. The dominant species on that world are immense, voracious sandworms that burrow through the barren drifts like subterranean dragons.
Chalamet isn't the only notable actor starring in the upcoming remake - Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, and Stellan Skarsgard also have roles in the film.
Isaac will play Duke Leto, the noble but doomed head of the Atreides family, while Skarsgard will play his rival, the ruthless Baron Harkonnen. Bardem and Zendaya star as members of the Fremen (Bardem as their leader and Zendaya as a Fremen tribe member and love interest of Paul's, called Chani), and Brolin will play Gurney Halleck, a loyal warrior of the Atreides house who later mentors Paul.
Also in the cast are Charlotte Rampling, Rebecca Ferguson, and "Blade Runner 2049" star Dave Bautista. And "Aquaman" star Jason Momoa is set to play Duncan Idaho, another Atreides foot soldier who helps Paul fight back against the Harkonnens.
The most current release date for the sci-fi epic is in December of this year, but could be changed because of the current health crisis. Are you excited?

My father gave me this book to read as a child. I remember watching the old dune movie (or was it a mini series?) With him as well. Sadly he passed away due to the pandemic last week. He was excited to see this. He adored Zendaya and Timothee as actors.
*edit. Thank you so much for all the condolences and kind words. I never expected to have to many likes or comments. I just remember when my sister and I saw this again just after our dad passed we both cried. My dad was such a movie lover, and a huge fan of Dune, but he liked all the actors who are cast in this version. Seems such a trivial thing to get upset over, but movies were my dad's love.

Dune is what you get when you're old enough to have moved beyond the realm of Star Wars. It's Game Of Thrones in space - the characters are more realistic, grounded and imperfect, it's definitely got the feel of Star Wars as it's a morality play, and it's got a lot of political intrigues and royal factions, power struggles, and conflicts.
Also, it's older than GOT and Star Wars. In fact in some ways, without Dune, we never would've had Star Wars or GOT.

Interesting that I started with Dune way back as a kid in the 80’s when Star Wars was still fresh and Star Trek was just starting it’s comeback. Dune started my syfy reading adventures whereas Star Trek and Star Wars was all movie/visuals
It inspired some things in Wheel of Time as well. So I’m internally grateful towards Dune as Wheel of Time is my favorite series of all time

Hans Zimmer turned down Christopher Nolan's upcoming movie (for the fisrt time since they work together) Tennet, to make the score of Dune. So... Just imagine the level of this project, Dennis cinematography with Hans compositions. It's going to be epic!

I agree with you. As a book nerd I always prefer reading book first and than watching the adaptation but man, not everyone live in US or great Britain... I live in Turkey and this book series are REALLY hard to find. I'm looking for this books since I heard that the movie adaptation will be released and it's been months but I couldn't find whole series in Turkish. Yes I can read them in English and I can understand most of it but it's never the same. So I'm really sorry to inform you that I'll probably watch the movie without reading the book.

Sci-fi is on an opposite spectrum, speculating possible futures with theoretical advancement in science with a dash of fantasy ftl space travel, sentient or not machines, alien lifeforms, wormholes.
Regular fantasy is folk tales, urban legends, super-heroes, talking animals, whatever.
At least this is how I know them to be.

The man behind the film is none other than Denis Villeneueve, one of the greatest living directors; he has an incredible string of films, two of which are intelligent - and excellent - Sci-Fi. Not only that, but Dune is a passion project for him. So I think it is safe to say that Dune is in the most capable hands. Of course, I doubt the film will be as good as the book (as 99% of adaptions aren't), however I feel like we can afford to have a bit of faith. As well as that, the cast list is incredibly solid.

tbh, if it wasn't for Denis making this I'd be worried. Blade Runner 2049 is such a pure piece of art that I have full faith in Dune. The quality of it will probably depend on how little the studio's get involved.
To be fair, a good movie does not have to follow any book its based on page for page, but if it gets the spirit of the book down so comepletely the book fans overlook it (at least until the heavier scrutiny begins, lol) the movie could become a classic. Just ask Peter Jackson! Not that im saying and Jackson compare notes, but I guess we'll see when the film drops in December! Can't wait! #TheSpiceMustFLOW
@@blueroninstudios I agree, as long as the spirit is intact then it's ok to modify the story to fit the movie format. My main worry is that the the population just don't go out and see quality movies when they're made. especially if they're not rammed down their throat with aggressive advertising and well established IPs. We will see... I'll be sad if this gets the same ho-hum reception that Blade Runner 2049 did. I fucking love that film (hence watching it about 4 times).

Dune 2000 was my favorite game as a kid. I read the book years later in high expectations, but I was so disappointed over the lack of "war", I expected massive army battles like in the game but the only thing that happened was a quick Harkonnen ambush in the beginning, and fremen riding a worm at the end. NOOOOOOOO
I cannot event put into words how excited I am for this movie. This film is literally being made by a genius. I would argue there is maybe 3 living directors who could manage to make this film and by God...we got the best one to step up. Just take my money now.
This was my favorite book when I grew up as a kid so of course I can't wait to see how this turns out. They have some really solid actors on board I know that.

Read it back in the late 70s, early 80s before the original movie came out. I didn't know anyone else who was even aware of Dune. Even then people were all about Star Wars. And for the record, about 40 years later, I'm reading it again.
I have re-read the book several times, lost count how many, as it is a great and original story, with great imagery. I hope this movie does it justice (sans the gender change of Lyet Kynes...).
My favorites books! I'm excited to watch this movie also because of Zendaya and Thimotee Chalamet!

Wish there were an easier way to give the actors that water deprived look described in the book.
As with big budget films that NEED big audiences - they always make sure the actors are looking beautiful. For some reason American audiences require beautiful actors/actresses in prime condition. Bit sad really. It's also very rare to have a good actor masked for an entire movie... Judge Dredd was an anomaly in that sense. The people need to see the pretty faces!
Half Alligator I totally agree. Granted the Atreides or rather Jessica and Paul were described as very attractive people but the Fremen are what need some work. Also the still suits.. they were completely covered from head to heel from my understanding

So excited to see this! I was a junior in high school in 1984 in Rubidoux, CA when I took their only equivalent class to my advanced English 3 College Prep course I was enrolled in my last high school in a better part of town before my parents divorce took us to another side of our city that was less fortunate than what we were used to. However that Science Fiction class rocked my little mind! Not only were we required to read George Orwell's 1984-- In actual 1984! But also Frank Herbert's DUNE. One of my HUGE favs! The debates and conversations in this class,,,,what a privilege it was to be a part of it. I also got to meet Ray Bradbury on a field trip in this class. I have high hopes for Denis Villeneve's version, and I LOVE Thimotee. He is perfect for Paul.

First read the books by Frank in Jr.high. And all his son's books too when they came out own all the movies. Dino's beautiful attempt and the syfy channel's more true mini series. I can't wait for this. So many excellent people from all the jobs in Hollywood coming together to make a masterpiece of a movie. Little realized fact of these books. You read them,learn them. And you will see so many patterns in our own world. So many things I've said in the past about stuff people just say "oh that's not right"or "your just a conspiracy theorist" yet in time im proven right. Yes of course...plans within plans within plans. Im hoping this inspires more people to read the original series at least. If nothing more than for a good read. And who knows maybe they'll learn something from it too.

Star Wars is an ancient "franchise" that transcends generations - there will always be another Star Wars movie and lots of PR and hype. A fresh, new tan on things - a truly creative new movie? That's way too risky. Why, they could lose money!

I’d love to see a good adaptation of the still suit. The actors would sweat to death in them unless they are only active nocturnal like most of the book.

They didn’t really destroy each other before Usul United them but did have a very renaissance method of succession.

Lynch's Dune is the standard for a reason. It has a majesty and grandeur none of the others have ever captured.

Am I the only one who doesn’t like when they use extremely recognizable actors, because they are too established outside of the films already? Star Wars for example utilizes actors who have yet to make it huge.

They mentioned in the description that this music is provided by True Remnant, there is a link to their channel, but I can't find the exact music they used here. There is one called "end of time" that sounds similar.

First of all, please forgive my english (I'm italian). I'm a HUGE fan of the original Lynch's Dune and I really appreciated Villeneuve's Sicario, Arrival and the underrated Blade Runner 2049, so I can't wait to see this movie. Just some doubts about cast: Chalamet, Zendaya, Momoa........... Ok, even Sean Young's Chani and Richard Jordan's Duncan were secondary characters, but I'm afraid that Zendaya and Jason Momoa (not such great actors) where chosen just for youngest audience. And Chalamet, I don't know if he will have the same "physical presence" as Kyle MacLachlan had in the 1984 movie. Obviously I hope to be disproved! Be well everyone!

I'm seeing a pattern that worries me in the casting of this movie: the actors chosen are there mostly because, let's be honest, they are magnets for younger audiences, as you said. Especially Chalamet and Zendaya. That, and the fact most of the chosen actors don't look one bit like their book counterparts: Chani is completely different, just to pick one amongst many.
I think Kyle MacLachlan, while a little... too old, was perfect in the role of Paul Atreides.
