This is the TV series Star Wars fans have been waiting for: #ObiWanKenobi is set to return to screens in a new TV show from Disney+.
Although fans feared that rumoured plans to develop an Obi-Wan spin-off had been put on carbonite, actor Ewan McGregor - who has previously starred as the dry-humoured Jedi Master - has announced he will return to the role in a new live-action series.
โItโs been four years of saying โwell, I donโt knowโ,โ he told fans at Disneyโs D23 Expo. โNow I can say โyes, weโre going to do itโ.โ
Itโs official! Ewan McGregor to return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for Disney+ Star Wars TV series. The currently untitled show doesnโt yet have a release date. However, at Disney D23, LucasFilmโs Kathleen Kennedy announced all scripts are written and filming will begin in 2020.
LucasFilm have announced that Deborah Chow will direct the series. Chow, who recently worked on fellow Star Wars Disney+ series The Mandalorian, has also directed episodes of Mr Robot, American Gods, Jessica Jones, Fear the Walking Dead, Better Call Saul and The Man in the High Castle.
The Obi-Wan series will take place eight years after the events of 2005โs Revenge of the Sith, where we last saw Obi-Wan watching over Luke Skywalker, the secret child of Darth Vader, on Tatooine. This means the show will be set approximately around the time of Solo: A Star Wars Story, a few years before A New Hope.
McGregor has also revealed Obi-Wan hasnโt quite recovered from the Jedi Cull in Revenge of the Sith. Many are hoping the series can fill in some of the questions about Obi-Wan. Why does he call himself โBen Kenobiโ in A New Hope? How is he so familiar with Mos Eisley? And did he have adventures outside Tatooine during his wilderness years?

Yes! Just like the magic given to the original trilogy by Sir Alec Guinness, Ewan Mcgregor carried the whole prequel trilogy, and was the only one outside of Qui Gon Jinn who had any real amount of screen time and did a phenomenal job with the shitty lines of dialogue and comedic retardation only Lucas considered "entertaining."

Could be an interesting spin off movie if done preferably by Gareth Edwards like Rogue One. Showing him on the run from Vader and the empire. Obi Wan Kenobi mentally unstable in the desert, trying to find purpose and grieving for murdering his friend, while at the same time watching over Luke. Feeling guilty of being the murderer of the childs father, he tries to distance himself from the boy. Being reminded of the horrific thing he did to his former Padawan. But at the same time the news of a mysterious Sith Lord rising amongst the ranks of the Empire reaches him. He wouldn't dare to believe it. But after some searching Obi-Wan discoveres after all he have done, he ultimately failed and his former friend still lives.
This sends him into a pit of guilt and confusion, the guilt of being the one to creating the monster now terrorizing the galaxy. It was his fault all along, dooming the galaxy, being the reason for the fall of the Jedi, and the Republic itself. So determined to ease his guilt he decides to leave Luke and to finish what he started. Spiraling into a revenge plot to assasinate his former friend. When he finally reaches killing distance, and now finally see the monster he created with his own eyes. But at the same time he gets news about an imperial squadron sent of to Tatooine, putting Luke in danger. Now Obi-Wan is faced with a choice. To take the dark path of revenge... or go back to save the child he swore to protect. He stares at the robotic figure in the distance, being so close to killing. But then remembering his purpose, he turns his back and flies back to Tatooine. Finds the Imperial Squadron near the farm and ignites the blue lightsaber for the first time in years. In the end making the right choice and saves Luke, Obi-Wan vows to never abandon his mission again. To protect the children of Skywalker and earning his name as the desert nomad Ben Kenobi.

MgGregor's portrayal of Kenobi was one of the few things about the Prequels that I thoroughly enjoyed. And the extended universe book revolving around his character in that time is one of my favorite Star Wars novels. Really hope that this sees the light of day and that they do it justice. McGregor deserves a second shot at portraying this iconic character.

I'm almost 100% certain we will see that happening. Maybe it being even more crucial than in the Rebels show (mb primary villain or related to it?). I mean we literally see his ship here.

This looks really interesting, much more so than the recently released trailer for the actual Disney+ show. If there were a Kenobi feature film I'd want it to be like this. A psychological character study, perhaps involving some minor external conflict but mostly about Obi Wan finding his confidence and inner peace with Qui Gon's help. Maybe Qui Gon will admit that he knew there was darkness ahead for Anakin and that it's all part of the will of the Force. Would be a cathartic moment for Obi Wan. Maybe they could also discuss Obi Wan's motives for letting Anakin live after the lava duel

After actually seeing three episodes of the show, I'd say it's all there. Sure, there is way more external conflict, but all the character development and PTSD Kenobi as well.

I could actually get into a more philosophical character study like this. There's something about the material explored in this concept trailer that has more human depth than the hollow new trilogy. That voice of Qui Gon speaking to him and his dreams haunted by betrayal and failure. Kenobi must have been a broken man for years alone on Tatooine, carrying a heavy weight from the collapse of everything he knew. The massacre of the Jedi. The fall of the republic. The futility of all the things he had fought for. The only thing that gave him hope was Luke.
I also like how this would also explain his time away from luke, as he would make him remember his failures. This would push him into solitary withing his training. I love this backdrop can't wait to see this movie.

Hate to say it, but Luke must have had to go through the same thing.

I agree that I am way more excited about this film than either Solo or Episode IV because this is something refreshingly new. To be honest, this trailer reminded me a lot of the trailer for "Tree of Life" back in the day.
I disliked that movie (and hardly like most of Malick's work) but I can see the series going more in that type of direction and being great.
And lets not forget that Ewan McGregor is an amazing actor. He can pull this off.
I would definitely see a movie stylized like this as a good parallel for what Luke went through, and an excellent setup for the third movie (since it alludes to Obi Wan's motivation for helping Luke Skywalker until he died at Darth Vader's hands)

Ewan McGregor is an amazing actor. Watching him in the prequels felt like watching the actual young Obi-Wan Kenobi, instead of just an actor playing a role. The score of this trailer is beautiful, and you can hear the regret and pain in Obi-Wan's voice. I'm very excited to see my favorite Star Wars character in theatres again.
