Whenever I think about Lincoln’s assassination, I always wonder what it was like for everybody else in the room that night. The theatre was not large by any stretch of the imagination, so I can’t even begin to comprehend what people witnessed, or the smell of gunpowder wafting through the room.
Not to mention the smell of blood…
There's an article and video of an old TV broadcast about the last known person alive to have witnessed the assassination of Lincoln: Samuel James Seymour
I’ve been to the Ford theater, they still do plays there actually, but we just went on the tour during the day. You’re right, it is not large. Unlike the portrayal here I’ve read, and other sources that the audience was very confused and actually thought Booth was part of the show when he jumped down onto the stage.
@@jameshershberger8085 You should have broken into the presidential box where Lincoln sat and attempted to jump of the balcony to test how Booth landed and how he broke his left leg.
It’s not large by todays standards, but back then it was. I’ve been there and it’s not tiny. There had to of been at least 100 people that witnessed Lincolns death.
imagine you’re having the time of your life as the president, watching a hilarious (at the time) show, and all the sudden you’re 360 noscoped in the head. and then 150 years later 13 million people are watching exactly how you died.

they ignored the fact that he broke his leg when he fell
I was thinking that
How did he mount a horse and ride away?

Rathbone: “Oof!”
Boothe: “Later!”
American Flag that Boothe gets tangled in: “Break a leg, actor boy! This one’s for America!”
He didn’t break his leg jumping from the balcony. Eyewitness accounts of Booth's hurried stage exit made it unlikely that his leg was broken. He did injure himself later on, though, during his flight to escape when his horse tripped and fell on him.

Back in 1981 I took a tour of the Ford theater. A few of us were allowed to go up the back stairs exactly like Booth did. i was able to step into the doorway to Lincoln's box. There was a half round thick plastic shield that precluded complete entry. Booth knew the theater and was able to easily access that area. He was well known to the theater staff. Lincoln's assigned body guard was at a bar a short distance away at the time of the assassination. Booth was wearing spurs, and as he leaped over the box railing onto the stage, his spurs got caught in the bunting around the presidential box. He broke his leg during the fall to the stage.
Abraham Lincoln's son James' life was once saved by Edwin booth at the Jersey City train station. James himself wrote about it. The Booth family, all actors, were mostly pro Union and the assassination by John Wilkes had life long negative affect on them. This history is fascinating and gives real meaning to the phrase, "Life is stranger than fiction".

I thought that booth broke his leg or something
He did
He did not, he just fractured a bone on his foot. If he had broken a leg, he would not have been able to escape
yes, he broke his fibula, but because Booth was wearing very tight leather bound boots to begin with, they acted like a 'splint'.. if Booth was wearing tennis shoes like we wear today, his fibula bone would have tore thru the skin and he wouldnt have been able to walk
New research makes a convincing case that the broken fibula resulted from his horse falling on him much later during the escape-a common break in that manner This would explain Booth's movements and hrs. of riding before Dr. Mudd set the break
